THOUGHTS FROM THE PASTOR Multiple Bible verses could substitute for news’ headlines today: “The nations are in an uproar, . . . .” Psalm 46:6 “. . . the earth should change, the moun-tains shake in the heart of the sea.” Psalm 46:2 Reading these and other headlines, our hearts can race, our blood pressure shoot up, and our mind take us to dark and scary plac-es.

So what do we do with this kind of news? How do we respond? The ancient Scriptures, in the same chapter of Psalms, offer this perspective for us: Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 Before anything else,. . . Stop. Pause. Breathe deeply. And remember. Remember that God is God. Remember that God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 In Nancy Koehn’s book Forged In Crisis, she tells the story of 5 “gritty leaders whose extraordinary passion and perseverance changed history.”

She calls them, masters of crisis. Polar explorer Ernest Shackleton President Abraham Lincoln Legendary abolitionist Frederick Douglass Nazi-resisting clergyman Dietrich Bonhoef-

fer Environmental crusader Rachel Carson. Woven in with the stories of crises facing each one of them, the author steps back and reflects upon the various skills and practices each of them used to face the multiple crises and find a way through them. One of those skills was the ability to step back, to wait, to give time for reflection and understanding before making a decision and moving ahead. Though what was ahead of them was a crisis, often there was time to think and reflect . . . before acting.

Be still and know that I am God. Other ways of saying this are: To do nothing is sometimes the best course of action. How beautiful it is to stay silent when someone expects you to be enraged. Sometimes not saying anything is the best answer. You see, silence can never be mis-quoted. In our very loud and fast world, perhaps pausing and allowing the silence to lead us is often the wisest thing to do.

United Methodist Church and what we can expect going for-ward. They have extended an invitation to United Methodists from around Bloomington/Normal.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED SHOVELING/SALTING

The recent cold snap of weather is a reminder that winter is here to stay for a while. To help make the church entry ways as safe as possible for everyone, we are looking for volunteers on Saturday evening and Sunday mornings before the services begin to assist in shoveling/salting when we receive snow and/or ice. If you are able to as-sist, please contact Dan Schlipmann at 309-825-7655. You will be added to a list of people that will be texted when shoveling/salting help is needed.

Donations will be accepted for the youth caring for the children. These donations will go towards their Guatemala Mission Trip.

Normal First Kids Ministry has one priority and that is to “’ Love God…with all our heart and soul and with all our mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew 22:37-39. We teach this through relational motives such as wonder,

discovery, and passion. Our K-5th grade Life App for February is Playlist: Put Love in the Mix. God is love. Even though we’ve all sinned, God loves us enough to make a way for us to be in rela-tionship. Jesus showed us how much God loves us by dying on the cross for our sins. “Here is what love is. It is not that we loved God. It is that God loved us and send Jesus to give his life to pay for

our sins.” 1 John 4:10

Summer Subs! Our dedicated and passionate small group leaders deserve a break over the sum-mer. This is where YOU come in. Children’s Ministry over the summer is full of fun.

FOCUS: Take a Closer Look.

In the summer, K-5th graders will be all together each Sunday will Mrs. Jill will be taking the lead. Please pray fully consider subbing a week or two over the summer and get the chance to see how

much fun we have while learning all about Faith! Email [email protected] for more information.

CHILDREN AND FAMILY MINISTRIES

Did you miss out? In 2019, we had the privilege of preparing and serving meals at Safe Harbor almost monthly. Each time, a different group of people came together to provide a nourishing meal for the guests at Safe Harbor. This has been a great way to get to know different people from church, as well as share God’s love with the Bloomington-Normal community.

Normal First will once again have several opportunities to prepare and serve a meal at Safe Harbor this year. We are scheduled for the following dates: April 24, June 14, July 24, November 29, and December 11. We also welcome donations to help offset the cost of the meal. You can sign up to serve or donate here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f044eafab2da3fe3-safe

Summer 2020 Mission Trips

This summer, Normal First youth will have two different opportunities to be part of God’s love in oth-er communities.

Our trip to Sumpango, Guatemala will be in June. Sumpango is a microcosm of Guatemala City in many ways. Although Sumpango is a more rural area than the city, many key issues that lead to poverty remain the same. Lack of jobs, education, and substance abuse remain the most prevalent source of despair. Many of the communities we will be partnering and serving in are traditional Ma-yan communities. Mayan communities have a beautiful and rich tradition. Mayans are native to Gua-temala and love to share about their history and culture so we will be encouraged to ask questions and listen. In the coming months, we’ll continue to share more information about Guatemala and about our trip.

In July, youth will be returning to Madison, Wisconsin to serve with Next Step Ministries. We are ex-cited to go back this year as we continue to share God’s love in tangible ways.

Daily Prayers

The daily readings for February will be prayers from a variety of sources. Some will be prayers written by people you may or may not be familiar with. Others will be scriptures that are in the form of a prayer. And others will be hymns or songs that are prayers to God. As before the Daily Prayers will be available by email and also in a printed form. We have created a booklet listing all of these prayers for each day. They are available at the Welcome Center. Or call the office if you’d like one mailed to you.

Happy New Year – 2020 Celebrating Earth Day’s 50th Year!

Earth Day was first started in 1970 to direct our focus to clean living and a healthy, sustainable planet for people and wildlife alike. Earth Day has served as a yearly reminder of how fragile our planet and how important it is to protect it. Normal First will begin a month-long celebration on Saturday, April 18. We are planning a family activity program, a nature photography exhibit, and more. We hope you will start now to take pictures of the beauty you see in your own backyard, in our community, or as you travel. We will display these photographs through the church and digitally as well. All ages are encour-aged to participate. The date for the Exhibit Opening and more details will be coming, but for now…Start looking for a photograph you will share! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Green Team recently learned about “Recycle Beyond the Bag,” a re-cycling program that has come to our community. Jewel-Osco on West Col-lege Ave. is participating in this program, and we are hoping other grocery stores will follow. You can recycle the following items: produce bags, store bags, ice bags, Ziploc & other reclosable bags, cereal box liners, case over-wrap, bread bags, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags, bubble wrap, and plastic e-commerce mailers. PLEASE REMEMBER: When recycling, All plastics must be clean, dry, and free of food/ organic residue.

Merge Leadership Academy Spring Semester Retreat

As 2020 begins, the Merge at ISU Wesley’s Leadership Academy will be taking a trip to Indianapolis! On the weekend of January 10th, they will be disconnecting from their everyday lives in order to focus on each other and God. Throughout the weekend, they will learn about the Enneagram and discover more about their personalities. Al-so, they will spend time talking about expectations for the semester

and planning events for this spring. On Sunday morning, the group will worship at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and participate in a different kind of worship than their weekly service with college stu-dents. We are so excited to see the leadership this year brings!

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF NORMAL

DAILY PRAYERS FOR FEBRUARY 2020 1 The Prayer of Saint Francis Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace, where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to under-stand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

2 Matthew 15:13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

3 “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart” Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; wean it from earth, through all its pulses move;

stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art, and make me love Thee as I ought to love. Words: George Croly Music: Frederick C. Atkinson 4 My Father, quiet me, ‘til in Thy holy presence, hushed, I think Thy thoughts with Thee.

Amen. Amy Carmichael Missionary 5 Psalm 118:24 This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

6 Prayer of Saint Benedict Gracious and Holy Father, give us the wisdom to discover You, the intelligence to under-

stand You, the diligence to seek after You, the patience to wait for You, eyes to behold You, a heart to meditate upon You, and a life to proclaim You, through the power of Je-sus, our Lord. Amen.

7 “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind” Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways; reclothe us in our rightful

mind, in purer lives Thy service find, in deeper reverence, praise. Words: John Greenleaf Whittier Music: Frederick C. Maker 8 Reverend Billy Graham’s Prayer for Our Nation (2013)

Our Father and Our God, we praise You for Your goodness to our nation, giving us bless-ings far beyond what we deserve… Set our feet on the path of Your righteousness and peace. We pray today for our nation’s leaders. Give them the wisdom to know what is right, and the courage to do it. You have said, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” May this be a new era for America, as we humble ourselves and acknowledge You alone as our Savior and Lord. This we pray in Your holy name. Amen.

9 “Abide With Me”

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Words: Henry F. Lyte Music: W. H. Monk 10 Psalm 119:114

You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in Your Word.

11 O Lord, open my eyes that I may see the needs of others; open my ears that I may hear their cries; open my heart so they need not be without support. Let me not be afraid to defend the weak because of the anger of the strong, nor afraid to defend the poor be-cause of the anger of the rich. Show me where love and hope and faith are needed, and use me to bring them to those places. And so open my eyes and my ears that I may this coming day be able to do some work of peace for Thee. Amen.

12 “Have Thine Own Way, Lord” Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Thou art the potter; I am the clay. Mold me and make me after Thy will, while I am waiting, yielded and still. Words: Adelaide A. Pollard Music: George C. Stebbins

13 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will

of God in Christ Jesus for you. 14 Compassionate God, we can love only because You have first loved us. When we find

Your call to love each other challenging, and when we are tempted to yield to stirrings of anger and hate in our hearts, may Your spirit again bring us back to the cross of Christ, where we see how greatly we have been forgiven and loved, and so how greatly we must forgive and love. Amen.

Rev. Tom Berlin 15 “I am Thine, O Lord”

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, and it told Thy love to me; but I long to rise in the arms of faith and be closer drawn to Thee. Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where Thou hast died. Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to Thy precious, bleeding side.

Words: Fanny J. Crosby Music: William H. Duane 16 God, help me to be honest so my children will learn honesty. Help me to be kind so my

children will learn kindness. Help me to be faithful so my children will learn faith. Help me to love so my children will be loving. Amen.

Marian Wright Edelman, Founder Children’s Defense Fund 17 Matthew 26:39

”My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may Your will be done.”

Words: Georgia Harkness Music: Jean Sibelius Lloyd Stone (vs. 1,2) 19 Psalm 63:1

O God, You are my God, I seek You, my soul thirsts for You; my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

20 “Take, O Take Me As I Am”

Take, O Take me as I am; summon out what I shall be; set Your seal upon my heart and live in me. Words and Music: John L. Bell

21 What we choose changes us. Who we love transforms us. How we create remakes us. Where we live reshapes us. So in all our choosing, O God, make us wise; in all our loving, O Christ, make us bold; in all our creating, O Spirit, give us courage; in all our living

may we become whole. Amen. Rev. Jan Richardson 22 “I Surrender All” All to Jesus I surrender; all to Him I Freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, in His pres-
