DO YOU BELIEVE IN TRUTH?
Tim’s mother had three kids. The first she named “April,” the second she named “May;” what was the name of her third child? Tim. Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one. In this world of ever-increasing complexity it can be refreshing to encounter some succinct and clear truths. Do you believe in Truth? The people of ancient Israel were struggling under the weight of unmanageable complexity. There are over 600 laws in the Old Testament that they were expected to learn and follow, and interpreters of the Law added even more requirements. The ancient Israelites desperately wanted to live in a way that pleased God but struggled to understand how to do that. In Jesus’ time biblical scholars were called “Lawyers” because they were experts on the five books of the Bible which are called the “Law of Moses.” A Biblical Lawyer approached Jesus and tested him asking, (Matthew 22:36) “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

Everything depends on those two simple commandments; love God with all your being and others as much as you love yourself. While it is true there is still much left to debate when it comes to the application of those two principles, nevertheless the principles themselves are eternal and unchanging. I think we all really know whether or not our decisions reflect a sincere love for God and for others. But we should remember that love is not merely an emotion, love is also a principle. The Epistle of James reminds us that real love is practical. How can I claim that I truly love my neighbor as myself and then turn my back on the needs of others? If someone stands at my door needy, hungry, and sick and I say “go in peace” without helping in any other way, then I can’t truly claim a faith that is loving and vital. In other words, when someone asks us, “Will you help me?” the answer should be “yes;” it’s as simple as that.
Spencer
Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”

Well, well, well .... By the time the next newsletter comes out we will be saying congratulations to four of our youth as they prepare for their high school graduations. Mitch Faris, Colton Cecchini, Kira Bewersdorff, and Alyssa Korpi will be off to see their next adventure in what, I am sure, will be a bright future for each and every one of them. But we will have to wait until Graduation Sunday to get a sneak peak into all their plans. In the meantime, we are putting the finishing touches on our mission trip to Washington DC. Nine of us will be traveling to the nation’s capitol to work with "Team Effort" in whatever project they have for us. It is my hope that we will know before we go; but either way, we are up for the challenge and because we will be together the whole time as a group … it really doesn't matter what the project is … we will conquer it and spread the love of Christ to all we come in contact with. We have a motto when we travel and it has been our motto for almost 16 years: "We represent Christ 1st, First Christian 2nd, and ourselves 3rd." This helps us to keep our focus in the right place when our energy levels are drained, stomachs empty and fuses short.
(Little reminder to Youth Group: It is important to turn in your notorized registration forms and money as soon as possible.)
The Youth Group is also helping to put together the 2017 "No-Talent” Talent Show on May 19th. The Youth Group has a few things up our sleeves that will be reminiscient of our old Winema days. If you are interested in participating, please see me after church on Sunday. We won’t be selling tickets this year — this will be a fun-filled evening for all who want to come! Finger foods are on the menu (chips, sandwiches, veggie platters, etc.).
Summer is right around the corner. What activities will you engage in that will bring you closer to God?
Janet
