Starting Sunday, October 20 in the sanctuary, you are invited to a Sunday School class called Life Together: How Can We Follow Jesus in the 21 st Century? The class will wrestle with some of the deep ethical issues of our day: What do we do? How do we act? How do we live like Christians in these confounding days? Everyone is invited, from high school to senior adults. I am curious to hear how you act and live out your faith in this community and the wider world. One of the incredible, astonishing gifts of this church is our Sunday School. Before I moved here, I was told how many people were active in Christian education and, frankly, I didn’t think the numbers were true. They are. We have no classrooms open and unused on Sunday mornings. You fill them up to overflowing, so I am curious to see what kind of energy you can generate together, listening to the conversations of the gathered community of faith. However, I am also aware that blind spots develop when we meet only with people like us. Has that happened here? What do we believe, but what do we miss? I don’t know, but we are about to find out. I also believe we have to begin to wrestle with Exile, or how the Church-- capital “C,” all of us Christians in North America, liberal to conservative-- deals with being dislocated from the central place in society, with smaller numbers and less influence and power. I believe we are in a time of massive change, cultural and technological. Everything is up in the air. The people of God have been through this before, in Babylonian Exile or under Roman rule or when the Roman Empire fell or when nation/states rose to prominence. We have been here before, but we haven’t been here before, and that is quite scary. Can we act out of faith or will fear guide our behavior? The politics of the world cites fear. What does our faith say? Finally, what will become apparent to us in our time together are the generational and political differences that divide us. I am curious if we will have the fortitude to listen to and truly hear what other Christians have to say without quickly forming our own opposing opinions to be heard immediately thereafter. My question is simple: Will we listen to each other? That may be the deepest question of all. Because if we cannot, if all we can do is spout our beliefs, then just hang a “For Sale” sign on the door outside because we are done. We. Are. Done. God isn’t finished, but we are. Can we listen? Peace….Chris

Starting Sunday, October 20 in the sanctuary, you are invited to a Sunday School class called Life Together: How Can We Follow Jesus in the 21st Century? The FCC Board needs YOUR skills!

Through our strategic planning process, the Board has determined FCC is in urgent need of a Comprehensive Communications Plan. This ad-hoc group will evaluate the needs of the church and determine if a Communications Committee with full board representation is warranted or if duties may be shared among existing committees.

If you have skills in any of the following areas or perform communications functions for an existing committee, please contact Anne to sign up:

Comprehensive communications planning

• Communications, Marketing and/or Public Relations experience

Beginning in December of this year, The Caller will only be published once a month. All of the important information you will need for the month ahead will be in that publication. We are glad to print and mail that newsletter to your house once a month, but if we can email it to you and save the postage, paper and print costs, all the better. Please email the church at [email protected] to let the office know if you want to continue to receive a printed copy of The Caller. The more we can reduce our usage of print and paper, the better that is for the planet. We are also investigating other means of communication as well. We are studying apps and website technologies. The communication platforms are numerous varied today. We want to use them all. Please help us know how to communicate with you, and the world, in better ways.
