What is Cajun and Zydeco Music?

Cajun is the music of theFrench-speaking settlers ofthe Louisiana bayou. It

combines French folk traditionswith German, Irish and a host ofother influences. It is anacoustic style driven by the fid-dle and accordion, with aninfectious rhythm, and an appealto all ages.

Zydeco music combines cajunstyles with other Caribbean

and Creole sources, in a mixtureof fiddle, accordion and rub-board, together with bass

guitar and even brass sections. The result is a hard drivingrhythm, that can range fromcajun through to blues and backagain — often in the same song! While both cajun and zydecohave strong traditional roots, they are very much alive. TheBury Louisiana Festival includesboth the old-time and themodern faces of cajun andzydeco.

As they say in cajun country,‘Laissez les bon temps roulez’

— Let the good times roll!

The Met – celebrating great music in all its forms!
