Key Thoughts on the Disciple’s Prayer Study

We have been studying the Lord’s Prayer, more accurately referred to as the Disciple’s Prayer, for

several weeks on Sunday morning. These times together have proven to be exciting as we are digging deep

to gain a better understanding of this well-known instruction. Such a simple question, “Lord, teach us how

to pray?” has yielded such deep meaning for our lives in Lordship to Jesus. Here are just a few notes from

our discussion.

“Our Father in heaven…” is a declaration of who God is to us, a loving Father who cares greatly

about his children. Father is a term which is a symbol of love, discipline, structure, teaching, leading and

protection among others. Jesus used this term over 165 times in the Gospels. This is our clear permission

to address God the same way because scripture says we became children upon belief (John 1:12) and we

are co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). The setting of our Father in heaven is a positional statement of his

Kingship over us as we are his children and not his equal. He is to be revered and respected as King. How

sweet this reference to heaven is in that it provides us hope for our eternal home with our Father.

“Hallowed be your name…” is the first petition of this ‘how to’ answer from Jesus. Hallowed is a position of honor caused by his holiness. Our petition is to be for the name of Yahweh to become now and forever hallowed. Our desire should be to have his name placed above all others, such that we yield all we have and are to him to display privately and publicly his position of honor in our lives. We are to pray that he will make his name hallowed and live such that we are aiding in its ushering in.

“Your Kingdom come…” was not a new concept presented by Jesus in his lesson, rather it was a re-

minder of the Kaddish. The Kaddish calls back to the history of Israel by Yahweh’s continual work to bring

his kingdom on earth. Jesus, then through his own presence and word, declared he was the kingdom come

(Mark 1:14-15). As Christians, we are the continued presence of the Kingdom of God on earth as God the

Holy Spirit lives within us (Romans 14:17, Colossians 1:13). Interestingly, Jesus also spoke of how the king-

dom was “not yet” (Mark 4:26-29). The full consummation of his kingdom at the end of time when every

knee will bow and tongue confess that IS LORD (Philippians 2:9-11).

“Your will be done…” correctly sets our mind on the proper perspective of prayer and the tone of

our lives. Specifically meaning that we want his will done, not our own. The purpose of prayer and the goal

of our Christian lives in obedience is for our will to bend to God’s will (Proverbs 19:21 and 2 Corinthians

3:18). God’s will is for the lost, to be found and for his children to pursue holiness, be thankful, and make

disciples.

The upcoming second half of this important teaching by Jesus will lead us to depend on him as our

Bread of Life, declare a requirement of forgiveness, and call us to avoid temptation. In order to grow our

relationship with the Lord we need to hear and understand his expectations. Then, there we will find

ourselves pleasing our Father and delighting in him.

Anyone can view these Sunday morning bible studies on our website under the Resources tab.

Make plans now to attend in person the upcoming services to join in the worship offering to our precious

Savior and hear his word.

I look forward to seeing you next Sunday!
