First AidCPR and Cardiac Arrest
What is CPR? CPR means cardiopulmonary resuscitation
First aid technique to restore heartbeat and breathing
Someone collapses at the park. You want to give first aid (because you’re a GOOD SAMARITAN!)…What do you do?
Make sure the scene is safe Approach the victim, ask
“Are you okay?”- If they do not respond,
shaketheir shoulders and ask
again! CALL 9-1-1 Check their ABC’s

A = Airway Are they choking on something?
B = Breathing Are they breathing?
C = Circulation Can you feel a pulse?
Airway Clear the airway! Place on hand on victim’s forehead and one hand on
their chin Press on the forehead and
lift the chin to tilt the victim’s head back
The mouth will open and thetongue will move away from the windpipe
Breathing Keeping your hands on the victim’s head, turn your
head and see if the chest rises and falls Listen for sounds of breathing and feel for exhaled air
on your cheek
What if they are not breathing?
Check the airway again Remove anything that may be blocking it Start CPR
Cardiopulmonary Arrest
What is it? Cardio – dealing with the heart Pulmonary – dealing with blood Arrest – Stopping Which means…Stopping of normal circulation of blood
due to failure of the heart
