DIALOGUING WITH ART IN BRERA In April, the Pinacoteca di Brera will once again be a star player on the Milanese cultural scene. An annual highlight of Milan’s Design Week, this month, the Pinacoteca will be staging an extraordinary new dialogue between two historical masterpieces. The ‘dialogues with art’ event compares in-house paintings with related, on-loan works, maintaining a tradition started by James M. Bradburne, the director of the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Biblioteca Braidense. The public can enjoy the sixth stage of the restructuring of the Pinacoteca’s collections and Napoleonic rooms with new explanatory texts, more explicit captions, newly painted walls and a totally revamped lighting system that portrays the works of art in brilliant colours. Until 1 July, visitors will have a chance to admire the dialogue ‘Around Loves. Camillo Boccaccino Sacred and Profane’.

ENTERTAINMENT Several venues offering food are included in the Entertainment section, because they are considered as meeting places.

DINING Reservations for most restaurants are strongly advised. In Italy, service is included in the price meaning that although tipping is not compulsory, it is obviously appreciated as a sign of satisfaction. Some menus include the word “coperto”, a small surcharge corresponding to the cost of the service and bread. Although no dress code exists in Italy, semiformal clothing is usually considered de rigeur at restaurants. Brera The heart of the Milanese ‘movida’, Brera is synonymous with the artistic heart of the city. CityLife NEW The area between Parco Sempione and

L ocated in the spaces of the Sala del Re, in

the heart of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele,

multi-media exhibition Leonardo3 will be

extending its scope with the addition of new

exhibits and interactive devices. To mark the fifth

anniversary of the opening of the exhibition

which is aiming to become a real museum – the

Leonardo3 study centre has unearthed several

of Leonardo da Vinci’s projects which have

been studied for years but have never actually

been recreated. A new gallery now hosts a series

of machines illustrating the foundry processes,

winches and structures that were designed

for the creation of Leonardo da Vinci’s horse; a

towering equestrian statue commissioned by

Ludovico Sforza in the 1490s, whose complete

reconstruction (a world premiere) can now be

viewed by the public.

In addition to the latter, a section dedicated

to cultural entertainment has enhanced the

exhibition. In a new room, especially set up

for the purpose, four sketches of Leonardo’s

‘Grotesque Heads’ come to life (see photo at right), thanks to the use of modeling techniques

and 3D animation, and offer visitors a unique

interactive experience. The Leonardo3

exhibition also shows the avant-garde

technology of Leonardo’s military engineering

studies in the first-ever creation of the Triple

Tier Machine Gun equipped with a mechanism

designed to hit a moving target at almost the

same speed as a modern machine gun. The

quest to highlight the maestro’s longstanding

activity as a set designer has resulted in a

reproduction of his ’Ocel della Comedia’ (A Bird

for a Comedy), a special model of a mechanical

bird that was designed to fly across the stage

and flap its wings via a mechanism that was

activated as it descended down a cable. The

LAKES OF LOMBARDY

Italy takes up only 0.5% of the planet’s surface. So the impact it has on travelers across the world is thus totally out of proportion to its actual size. However, there are many reasons for this: the history of the Roman Empire,

whose power made Italy the centre of the world for decades and its strategic position in the Mediterranean, which fostered Italy’s relationships with other countries, are only two of the many reasons. However, what makes this peninsula unique is its ‘territory’: its incomparable wealth of coastlines and mountains, lakes and plains, compressed by nature into the smallest of spaces, and then skillfully shaped by man using a variety of artistic techniques. Therefore, what we call ‘landscape’ is actually a convergence of hills and rows of cypresses planted by man, steep banks and cultivated vineyards, fertile areas transformed into cities and then decorated with marble, embellished with art and painted with colours that have made history. This is Italy. A poignant example of how a place can be blessed by both the climate and man’s ingenuity (which does not mean that everything is perfect…). On 14 March 2017, for the first time, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBACT) celebrated ‘National Landscape Day’, to raise awareness among citizens about issues linked to the protection of the landscape and remind people just how important it is to adopt a new, more insightful attitude to it, since the landscape is a

TAX FREE REFUND GUIDE

VAT (in Italian: IVA) is a value added tax on goods and services, and is part of the European Union’s value added tax system.

In some cases, travellers may be granted a VAT refund. This refund does not cover the services supplied by hotels, restaurants, taxis or agencies.

You may be eligible for a VAT refund provided that:• you are a non EU resident;

• the goods purchased are intended for personal or family use only and are carried in your luggage;

• the overall value of the goods purchased exceeds 154,94 Euro (VAT included);

• the purchase is certified by an invoice. This invoice should include a description of the goods purchased, your personal information as well as the details of your passport or any other equivalent document;

• the goods leave EU territory by the end of the third month after the month that you bought them;

• several specific customs formalities are complied with;

• the invoice is returned to the Italian retailer within four months after the purchase was made.

The goods purchased and the relevant invoice must be shown at the customs exit point when leaving EU territory (if you intend to pack the purchased items into your check-in luggage, you must go to Customs BEFORE checking in).

After leaving EU territory, the traveller must return the original invoice, regularly endorsed by the customs office, to the Italian retailer. Said invoice must be returned within four months from the date when the document was issued.

The refund can be made directly by the Italian retailer (however, make sure that the shop you’ve chosen displays a “Tax Free Shopping” or “Euro Tax Free” sign in its window).

Several Tax-Free companies are able to offer immediate VAT cash refunds when the goods leave either Italian or EU territory (thus exonerating the passenger from having to return the invoice to the retailer). However, this procedure only applies at major international airports or main border crossings. Most major department stores have Tax Free Refund offices.

The services provided by Tax-Free companies imply the payment of a small administrative sum which is directly deducted from the amount of VAT refunded to the traveller.

In the event of a traveller not receiving a VAT refund within a reasonable period of time, he or she should re-contact the Italian retailer or one of the aforementioned companies.

However, please note, VAT cannot be refunded directly by customs offices.
