Price: $35-$45

They’re coming back! Don’t miss The Tubes’ return visit to the Firehouse where they’ll once again regale you with classic tunes from yesterday, as well as fresh selections from their recent CD, “Mondo Birthmark”. Since The Tubes’ 1975 debut album that included the hit “White Punks on Dope”, the group has built a fiercely loyal international fan base that appreciates the wild satires of media, consumerism and politics as well as the creativity, art skills and theatrics that highlight their performances. One critic opined that with their media savvy and theatrical skills, The Tubes were “born to create rock video, but arrived several years too early.” Don’t miss them!

BLUES: BLUES BLOWOUTMark Hummel and The Blues SurvivorsOctober 2, 7:30 p.m.

Price: $12-$28

Harmonica-led blues bands draw their inspiration from the Chicago school of blues, but by adding elements of jump blues and rock ‘n’ roll into the mix have come up with an exciting new style of West Coast blues. In Oakland, northern capital of California blues, harmonica player and vocalist Mark Hummel has been a major force in shaping this new musical genre as leader of The Blues Survivors.

Mark Hummel is a road warrior, a true Blues Survivor. Along the way, he has crafted his own trademark harmonica sound, a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack combined with a strong sense of swing. Since 1991, he has produced the Blues Harmonica BlowoutTM series. These much-heralded shows continue to draw sellout crowds wherever they appear and their list of band members is a Who’s Who of Blues harp history: James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Magic Dick, Jerry Portnoy, Rick Estrin, Lee Oskar, Curtis Salgado, Billy Boy Arnold, Johnny Dyer, Watermelon Slim, and James Harman. Be part of this incredible musical experience. Come to the Firehouse on October 2nd and get your blues on!

HARRINGTON ART GALLERY: NATIONAL WATERCOLOR SOCIETY TRAVELING EXHIBIT October 26 – December 11

Donations appreciated

The National Watercolor Society show represents the best of water media painting. This traveling exhibit features a selection from the organization’s 2010 90th annual exhibit which, in the NWS tradition, is traveling to numerous venues nationwide during the year following the exhibit.

Two artists featured in the current traveling exhibit are Kathleen Maling and George James. Kathleen Maling, NWS, AWS, FWS, is a watercolor artist living in Saint Augustine, Florida. Her artwork has appeared in Watercolor Artist Magazine, International Artist Magazine, and Florida Wildlife Magazine. Kathleen enjoys painting the fauna and flora of Florida, and exhibits in several shows throughout the year.

By abandoning traditional methods, George James has discovered a new, creative watercolor process through combining synthetic paper with the traditional watercolor media. He has received international acclaim as well as numerous awards for his work and teaches workshops in the United States and Canada.

LECTURE: THESE AMAZING SHADOWS

A Story about The National Film Registry and the Power of the Movies

September 15, 7 p.m.

Price: Free

What do the films Casablanca, Blazing Saddles and West Side Story have in common? Besides being popular, they have also been deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and listed on The National Film Registry. These Amazing Shadows tells the history and importance of the Registry, a roll call of American cinema treasures that reflects the diversity of both film, and indeed the American experience itself. The current list of 550 films includes selections from every genre – documentaries, home movies, Hollywood classics, avant-garde, newsreels, and silent films. These Amazing Shadows reveals how American movies tell us so much about ourselves…”not just what we did, but what we thought, what we felt, what we aspired to, and the lies we told ourselves.”
