To prevent and minimize the loss of life and property threatened by the hazards of fire, medical and rescue emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and disaster situations within the community.

THE DEPARTMENT

The City of Fremont Fire Department is nationally recognized for excellence. Our state of the art fleet includes 11 front line fire engines, two tillered aerial ladder trucks, six wildland patrols and three specialty rigs stationed at 11 modern fire stations. The Fire Department maintains the following innovative and cutting edge programs: engine based paramedics, Tactical EMS, Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drone), Special Operations Task Force (Hazmat & Rescue) and Water Rescue. In addition our personnel are actively involved in wildland response through the State’s Mutual Aid System, participate on California Task Force 4 Urban Search and Rescue Team, and on the East Bay Incident Management Team. The Department also serves the community through volunteer programs which support public education and emergency preparedness.

Under general supervision, performs fire suppression, provides emergency medical services, and hazardous materials mitigation activities while maintaining the following core values:

WHAT IS A LATERAL FIREFIGHTER?

To be considered as a Lateral Firefighter, candidates must currently be employed as a full-time paid firefighter with no breaks in service and have passed probation with two or more years of continuous firefighter experience in an agency of similar size and/or complexity as the Fremont Fire Department.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR THIS JOB WILL TYPICALLY HAVE:

The successful candidate will have any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. A typical way to acquire the appropriate background includes:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Vocational training and college coursework in Fire Technology are highly desirable.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Certificates listed under “Apply Now” on page 5 of this announcement.

Valid Class C California driver’s license.

A valid Class C California Driver’s License with a Firefighter endorsement by

completion of the probationary period.

A California State Accredited Firefighter I & II Certificate or the equivalent

IFSAC or Pro Board Certification.

Ability to successfully complete the Fremont Fire Department acting Engineer

program by the end of the probationary period.

Vision requirements: Not less than 20/100 in each eye correctable to not less

than 20/30 in each eye with glasses, without functional color-blindness or

impairment. Limitations in the field of vision may be disqualifying.

PARAMEDICS: Firefighter Paramedics are required to have a minimum of 6

months service experience as an Advanced Life Support provider.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Firefighter-EMT:

$95,042.35-$115,511.53 (plus 2.5% EMT premium pay)

Once assigned by the Chief to perform the full range of Paramedic duties:

$95,042.35-$115,511.53 (plus paramedic premium pay equal to 10% of top step

Firefighter)

Salary pending Council approval on July 16, 2019. Firefighter experience will be

used to determine salary step placement.

One-year probationary period from date of hire for laterals

$2,180/month 2019 health benefit allowance

Paid Lateral Fire Academy (approximately 5 weeks)

48/96 work schedule after completion of the Academy

The probationary period for this position is 12 months.

SELECTION PROCESS (Tentative Schedule)

Candidates must be on the Firefighter Candidate Testing

Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List. More information

FCTC Written test: The FCTC written test taken within

12 months prior to the final filing date (between

7/30/18 and 7/29/19).

Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card

issued within 6 months prior to the final filing date

(between 1/30/19 and 7/29/19).

Oral Board & Chief’s Interviews 8/12—8/16/19—

Candidate written test scores will be evaluated and a

limited number of the best qualified candidates will be

invited to participate in the interview process, which will

include oral board interviews and Chief’s interviews. All

candidates who pass the interview process will be placed

on the City’s Eligible List for Lateral Firefighter. No

feedback is available regarding your results.

A limited number of candidates will be selected to

participate in the PHQ.

Background 8/26/19—10/3/19—A limited number of candidates successfully

completing the PHQ will be fingerprinted and assigned to a background

investigator who will complete a very thorough background. This step takes

approximately 6 weeks.

A limited number of candidates successfully completing the background process

will be assigned a medical exam and psychological exam.

Firefighter Lateral Academy will tentatively begin November 18, 2019 — The Fremont Fire Department

runs its own Fire Academy.
