No one wants to think about their house burning down or their family being in danger, but the fact of the matter is a little preplanning could go a long way to making sure your family gets out of any possible danger unharmed.

Fire Prevention Week in Canada is October 7-13 and this year, fi refi ghters are asking the public to identify two ways out of any room, in case of an emergency like a fi re in your home.

A rabbit always has two ways out of

its burrow, and people should do the same, indicated Humboldt Fire Chief Norbert LeBlanc.

Every room that someone sleeps in in a home should have two exits — a door and a window, he said.

That way, if a fi re breaks out and the door is blocked by fi re, you can always escape through the window.

“If there’s a fi re and it’s 3 a.m., and you can’t get out the door, what are you going to do?” LeBlanc asked. “Look at your window. If you can’t get out of it, that needs to change.”

Not just any window will do any-

more. “It has to be a properly sized win-

dow,” LeBlanc explained, with four square feet of opening.

That means in a basement, if a win-dow is only 15 inches high, it has to be 36 inches across, to allow for four square feet of opening.

And windows should open with nothing restrictive in the way, unlike the awning windows so commonly installed decades ago.

“You shouldn’t have to have special tools or knowledge to open the win-dow so that it’s clear,” LeBlanc said.

You should be able to open the window and get out through it with a minimum of effort.

For those homes with older win-dows that open restrictively, or are too small, LeBlanc recommended replac-ing them, especially in the bedrooms.

Parents should not only have a plan for getting themselves and their kids out an alternate exit to their rooms, they should also tell their children about it and practise it, especially if their children are too small to reach their windows on their own.

“A lot of parents put their kids in basement bedrooms,” said LeBlanc. “If their window is too high on the wall for them to reach, a ladder should be

nearby for them to use.”It takes just minutes — about four

to be exact — for a fi re to get so hot it fl ashes over.

“It’s because of the materials used to build houses now,” LeBlanc ex-plained. “It’s incredible how quickly fi re travels.”

Plastics, man-made materials and upholstery allows fi re to move rapidly throughout a home, and gives off very black smoke.

Heat quickly builds to the ceiling of a room, and before you know it, the smoke is so hot, it turns to fl ame as well.

Carpet, laminate fl oors, and even hardwood fl oors covered in thick lay-ers of lacquer can give off dangerous chemicals when they are burning as well.

There has been a lack of structure fi res in the Humboldt area over the past year. Out of the 10 calls the Hum-boldt Fire Department responded to in the rural area, and 11 in the city, most were motor vehicle collision or small fi res.

They haven’t had to fi ght a major fi re yet this year, which is great news for them.

“Everybody keep up the good work,” LeBlanc smiled.

Members of the Humboldt Fire Department have been using a training facility they built out of shipping containers to hone their firefighting skills. At left, firefighters learn about the nature of fire, how it travels and how fast it moves, during a controlled burn inside a special shipping container modified for that purpose. Above: A team of firefighters heads into the shipping containers that were modified to create a house-like space for them to use to perfect their search and rescue techniques. photos by Keri Dalman
