From the Rectory Dear Friends

I wonder if you remember Bob Geldof’s pop band, The Boomtown Rats, whose members are all from County Dublin? They’re still going, I gather, with a new tour planned. You will no doubt know Bob Geldof for his role in Band Aid and his charity work. In 1979 the band launched their now almost infamous single, I don’t like Mondays. It became something of an anthem for the majority of working people as they returned to work after a relaxing weekend and no doubt was played in many cars as they waited in traffic jams trying to reach offices and rail stations.

If the song became a kind of shorthand for the general disappointment

associated with the start of the working week, this belied its origins in events of a rather more sinister and horrifying kind. The song was a num-ber one hit in the UK and popular across the world, except in America, perhaps betraying the fact that it was written in response to a school shooting in California of the kind which, tragically and inexplicably, has been repeated in recent years. Returning to work after a break will always cause a degree of consternation for many. And yet it is also a sad and on-going reality that human existence is shot-through with a far deeper vein of suffering and grief. Thankfully, it isn’t often on the scale of the horror associated with seemingly random killings of large numbers of innocent people. But it’s there, in a myriad of ways, affecting all of us the world over. In this context of a broken world, the Church has a particularly im-portant role to play.

During April the Church will itself witness to the first day of the week,

just as the Boomtown Rats have done. But it will be neither the same day of the week, nor the same kind of witness immortalised in the iconic pop song. On Easter Day our churches will hear the story from St John’s Gos-pel about how Mary Magdalene arrived at an empty tomb, in the darkness, early on Sunday morning, ‘the first day of the week’ (Jn 20.1). It wasn’t the first day of the modern working week, but it is the first day of the most

Page 4: FIPPENNY FIPPENNY NEWSNEWS · just as the Boomtown Rats have done. But it will be neither the same day ... “Tell me why I don’t like Mondays,” sang Bob Geldof. Could it be be-

important week ever for humankind. And Mary Magdalene did not find a sealed, cold tomb; she met the risen Lord and witnessed to his resurrection when she told the disciples of her encounter with him. The resurrection conveys the ultimate hope for humanity that our life continues beyond our physical death. The details are a mystery, but the hope is real. It is a mes-sage of redemption and restoration and it is central to the Christian faith. “Tell me why I don’t like Mondays,” sang Bob Geldof. Could it be be-cause for so many of us Monday is ‘the first day of the week’, rather than Sunday? Every Sunday has something of the Easter hope about it, and the world is crying out for that. With every blessing for a joyful Eastertide Fr Darren

Village Hall continued.

Fippenny Fayre – Sunday June 15th at the Recreation Ground, Cas-tle Lane – in aid of Okeford Fitzpaine Village Hall.

WE NEED YOUR HELP- we have a small hard working committee,

most of whom are representative members and therefore working for their own committees as well, so any extra help at this, our biggest fund raiser, would be much appreciated.

Any donations of cakes, plants, bric-a-brac, books, tombola or raffle

prizes, will help us and if you could give a little time as well that would be great.

Some of what goes on to make it happen:- The Day Before – Cakes to make. Plants to sort out. If possible, all ta-

bles, chairs, gazeboes, crockery, books & bric-a-brac etc have to be moved from the Hall to the Recreation Ground.

On the day - gazeboes have to be put up, tables/chairs distributed

around the field and all manner of goods moved to the right place. The car boot, Bouncy Castle and Dog Show areas have to be decided and roped off. A place has to be provided for the St John Ambulance person-nel to work (but we hope they won't need it). The marquee for the Band has to be erected, the public address system has to be working and from 2:00pm we have to run the stalls.

At the end of the day all the gazeboes have to be taken down, all tables,

chairs and other equipment have to be returned to the Hall and packed in the store. Only then can we all breathe a sigh of relief and hope that we've made a huge profit – oh yes and then I have to count all the money!

So you can see any help you give will be very gratefully received.

Diane Burt, Treasurer/Secretary & bookings.

Parish Council News Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group

The Parish Council has now agreed the neighbourhood area to enable a neighbourhhod plan to be produced and is looking for 2-3 people to sit on a steering group to help produce the Neighbourhood Plan.

A Neighbourhood Plan is a community-led framework for guiding the future development, regeneration and conservation of an area. It is about the use and development of land and may contain a vision, aims, planning policies, proposals for improving the area or providing new facilities, or allocation of key sites for specific kinds of development.

The Neighbourhood Plan would be part of the statutory development plan for the area, if successful at referendum. This statutory status gives the Neighbourhood Plan far more weight than some other local docu-ments, such as Parish Plans, Community Plans and Village Design State-ments.

Please contact the Clerk on the email below if you are interested in tak-ing part and helping your Local Council to produce this important docu-ment. Message From Trading Standards

Have you had a tree, or branches, come down during the recent stormy weather? Looking for a tree surgeon who won’t rip you off?

Don’t become the victim of uninvited doorstep callers offering to cut down, or make safe, trees, or large branches in your garden. This is the time of year when ‘rogue traders’ may take advantage of those unfortu-nate enough to have suffered damage to their homes and gardens.

Before employing anyone to remove trees or branches check out the Trees page on the Borough of Poole’s website at http://www.boroughofpoole.com/environment/countryside/trees-and-woodland/privately-owned-trees/ There is a link on this webpage to the Arboricul-tural Association which has a list of qualified tree surgeons.

Trading Standards recommend that you consider choosing a trader on the Buy With Confidence scheme. All the traders have been checked out by Trading Standards and are CRB checked. Get access to a list of repu-table traders from builders, roofers, plumbers and electricians, to garden-ers and tree surgeons. Better safe than sorry!

If trees from your garden have caused damage to your neighbour’s

property you may find that you have access to a Legal Helpline through

your buildings/contents insurance – depending on the terms of your policy

Okeford Fitzpaine CE VA Primary School

Dear All, I am very pleased to be back at school after a few weeks of

feeling unwell. I have had a mot with various blood tests. The majority seem to be clear – one is being followed up. A slight change in work life balance and lifestyle has been suggested and I am hopeful that this will improve things greatly.

I was touched by the welcome back that I received. The smiling faces from our wonderful children are an amazing tonic. Thanks for the kind messages of support while I was away. I would like to quote from Mr Johnson from a recent school newsletter when he says,

“My sincere thanks to all the pupils and staff who excelled as ‘team Okeford’ over these few weeks.” This says it all! Trees for Dorset

The children in Oak class spent a morning with Mrs Palmer and Mr Rothman planting sapling trees in the school grounds. In the afternoon children in Willow class also did some planting and then took some wil-low cuttings to try and grow. They also spent some time identifying trees from their buds. This is a valuable on-going project and we are very grate-ful to the organisation for supporting us. Confirmation 2014

Fr Darren, the Rector, is planning to run Confirmation Classes this year, after school once a week, which will be open to children currently in Year 5 and 6. It is not necessary to be baptised already to be confirmed - this can be done as part of the same service. The service itself, a wonder-ful occasion led by the Bishop, will take place in Salisbury Cathedral in a few months' time. Parents/carers are welcome to share in the group and may also be baptised and confirmed if they wish.

If you and/or your child would like to be confirmed, or if you simply want more information, please contact Fr Darren on 01258 861847. Mrs Sharpe

After almost 8 years with us Mrs Sharpe has resigned from her position at school and will be leaving on Friday 4th April. She wishes to reduce her working hours and will be starting at Shillingstone Primary School after the Easter holidays. We will be recruiting a new office/finance per-son and the advertisement will appear on the Dorset for You website in

On behalf of school I wish to offer my sincere thanks to Helen for sup-porting me and the school over the last 8 years. Her hard work and effort have been so beneficial. Helen and her family will be missed. Fair Trade Café

Thank you to all those who came and supported our Fair Trade Café . We made a profit of £20.20 which covers another month of sponsorship of Kaberi. Thank you to Mrs Cook-Paine for organising the purchase of the fair trade goods and organising the event. Swimarathon – Saturday 8th March

We were pleased that our team of swimmers managed to swim 58 lengths of the swimming pool. It was a valiant effort and well done to Steven, Megan, Daisy, April, Tommy, Harry L-S, Millie and Ben. We are still taking in sponsorship so if you would like to donate please hand your contribution in to the school office. The school will get 50% of money raised towards funds. Welcome to Mrs Fowkes

We are pleased to welcome Mrs Fowkes to Willow Class. She has been teaching since we started after half term and has settled in well. Mrs Fowkes will be with us until the end of term so that the children have con-tinuity in their learning during Miss Moriarty’s absence. Shrove Tuesday

The children in Ash class celebrated Shrove Tuesday by making pan-cakes with Miss Berry. The best part of the activity was when they were cooked and everyone enjoyed eating them with lemon juice and sugar! Peace Prize District Winner

We are extremely proud to announce that Lilly, who was one of the Blackmore Vale Lions Peace Prize Winners at school, has gone on to win the District Peace Poster Competition. She will be presented with the cup at the end of March and I believe will be entered into the Regional Com-petition. Well done Lilly. We wish you well at the next stage. Easter Bingo – Friday 28th March

The PFA will be holding a bingo night in the school hall on Friday 28th March, doors open at 6.15pm and eyes down at 6.30pm. Everyone is wel-come to come along and enjoy a family evening of bingo. The prizes at the bingo will be hampers from each class. A list will go up in the kitchen for parents to sign up to contribute one item. There will be a prize for the

Coleen responded, "Yes, but for that you would need real teeth."

A SMOKE alarm without batteries is ‘a useless piece of plastic.’

That is the message from Group Manager Karen Adams, Head of Pre-

vention at Dorset Fire and Rescue Service. Karen leads a team of fire-fighters and officers, who are taking DFRS’s safety message out into the community, with a particular focus on educating vulnerable and hard to reach groups.

When someone dies in a fire, it is always upsetting. At Dorset Fire and

Rescue Service, our aim is to reduce all preventable fire deaths to zero. We want to see every home in Dorset with a working smoke alarm and that means testing your smoke alarms every week! With the clock change fast approaching, when you go around your home changing the time on all your clocks, take the time to test your smoke alarms too!

Karen said: "We provide a FREE home safety check service. This

means firefighters and DFRS staff visit residents in their homes and if ap-propriate, fit or replace smoke alarms, advise on the use of candles, unat-tended cooking, electric blankets, overloading sockets, chimneys, low en-ergy light bulbs, escape plans and much more. This is all free of charge with the aim of encouraging people to think about fire safety in the home.”

She added: "People need to consider their night-time routine – close

doors, keep an escape route clear, and check they know where the door key is so they can let themselves out. Smoke alarms should be tested once a week to make sure they are still working and in good condition. A smoke alarm without a battery is useless piece of plastic."

To request a Free Home Safety Check for you, or someone who may

be vulnerable and would benefit from a visit, please get their permission and contact us FREE on 0800 038 2323 or use the online form found at www.dorsetfire.gov.uk. Just fill out the form with your name and address details and click ‘submit’. Our PinPoint technology will analyse whether or not we can make your home safer and you will either receive a FREE Home Safety Check or Home Safety Information Pack, containing a leaf-let on safety and a checklist for the home.

Sewing and Craft Group

We are group of women who like sewing, knitting and any other fabric type crafts, who get together once a month to help, inspire and inform one another.

It started when we were complaining about the quality and fit of

clothes these days and how you often had to alter them etc. It is much easier to get a better fit with help of a friend, many of us have not sewn seriously for years and need a boost. I must admit that this winter we seem to have mostly been knitting or doing our crochet but that’s OK. Help and advice on puzzling out patterns can be a great help. Next month I shall need some help in shortening a dress, for example, difficult on your own.

We have several patchwork enthusiasts, one person has fished out

some tapestry work that had lurked in the back of a cupboard for years. Lots of chat, and tea, of course. The next meeting is on Monday April 28th, 2.30pm at No 15, Bowey, by invitation of Margaret Horton. If you’d like to chat first ring me, Jane Tapping 860095. It’s all very informal and friendly so why not pop in.

Easter Biscuits, and a few other things!

Cooking for Easter is no where near as frantic as Christmas, thank goodness. It is nice, however. to prepare some of the traditional treats. I’ve included Hot Cross Buns, although most people do buy them these days. I do not have a breadmaker so have to use a large bowl and my hands. If you have a machine just check the instructions for currant buns.

Hot Cross Buns The smell of the buns cooking is wonderful

1¾ lb strong flour; 1 oz yeast (if using dried yeast check the instruc-tions); 4 oz castor sugar; ¾ pt tepid milk or milk & water; ⅛ tsp salt; ¼ tsp ground cinnamon; ¼ tsp grated nutmeg; 4-6 oz currants; 1 oz chopped peel; 4 oz butter or marg; 2 eggs; milk & castor sugar to glaze.

Sieve 8oz of the flour into a basin. Cream the yeast (or mix as per packet) with 1 tsp sugar and stir into the tepid liquid. Cover with a cloth and leave in a warm place to set the sponge - about 20 mins. Meanwhile sieve the remaining flour with sugar, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg, stir in the currants and peel. Melt butter and beat the egg. When the mixture has well “sponged”, stir in all the dry ingredients, pour in the melted butter and aggs and mix thoroughly, then knead a little. Cover the basin with a damp cloth or cling film and put it aside in a warm place to rise for about 1 hour or until the dough has almost doubled in size. Flour your hands, take small portions of dough and shape into buns. Put onto a well greased baking tin, spacing well, cut a cross on top and again cover and put to prove in a warm place for 20-30 mins. If necessary re-mark the crosses on top before putting the buns in a very hot oven. 450°F/ 8-9 Gas. Dissolve sugar in milk. When buns are golden-brown and almost cooked, glaze them with the milk/sugar mix., pop back into oven for 5 mins. Cool on a cake tray. Freeze well.

Iced Simnel Biscuits

4 oz butter or marg; 4 oz castor sugar; grated rind of 1 lemon; 1 egg; 8oz flour; milk to mix; Glacé icing , colour as desired, chocolate butter icing. Piping bag,

Cream together the fat and sugar and beat in the lemon rind and egg. Add the sieved flour and enough milk to mix to a stiff dough. Roll out thinly, prick all over and cut into rounds. Baked in a moderate oven 350°/Gas 4/150°C for about 15 mins. When cold, coat tops with glacé icing, pale green or yellow, pipe with a little chocolate butter cream. Easter Biscuits

3 oz butter or marg; 3 oz sugar; 1 egg yolk; ½ oz chopped peel; 1 oz

currants; ¼ ox mixed spice; 6 oz flour; pinch salt. Cream fat and sugar and beat in the egg yolk. Add alternately the peel,

and dried fruit and the sieved dried ingredients. Mix to a stiff dough, us-ing a little milk if necessary. Roll out on a floured board, prick all over and cut into rounds with a fluted cutter. Bake on a greased baking sheet in moderately hot oven, 350°F/150°C/Gas 4 for about 20 mins until light-ly coloured. Cool on a wire tray. You can omit the spice or substitute ground cinnamon or cloves. Currants are traditional but you can replace them with other chopped fruit.

I like to make Lemon Curd in the spring. Fresh and tangy it really

tastes so very good. Beautiful on scones or bread and butter, it is also good to put in a Victoria Sandwich for Easter teatime, or in jam tarts too. Lemon Curd I have several recipes but this one always works.

3 oz butter; 3 large eggs; 6 oz castor sugar, rind and juice of 2 large lemons.

Put butter, sugar, lemon juice and very finely grated rind into a basin, stand over a pan of boiling water, or use a double saucepan if you have one. Blend well together, and when the butter has melted, add the well beaten eggs. Stir until the mixture thickens, takes about 20 mins. I like it to well cover the back of the wooden spoon. Pour into warm pots and seal when cold. Will keep for a few weeks but usually doesn’t last that long. I remember my first taste of Lemon Curd. It was towards the end of the war and a neighbour had made some. Don’t ask where the lemon came from. I thought it was the most wonderful thing I had ever tasted!

Easter Nests This is a really quick treat that the kids might like to do.

Packet of small meringue cases, little jam, lemon curd and or cream for filling. Small chocolate eggs.

Put a small dob of jam in bottom of each case, cover with some whipped cream and decorate with the mini-eggs. You know very well what I mean by a dob!

Happy Easter to you all. Get cooking!

Dorset Museum commemorates First World War with new exhibition A Dorset Woman at War: Mabel Stobart and the Retreat from Serbia

1915. 31 May-15 Nov 2014 10am to 5pm Mon to Sat

A special exhibition commemorating the centenary of the start of the

First World War. The exhibition will focus on the story of one Dorset woman, Mabel St Clair Stobart, exploring her life and the role she played during the epic retreat of the Serbian army in 1915.

The Museum has a collection of unique photographs recording Mabel Stobart’s experiences in Serbia. They trace her intrepid journey from the tented field hospital she established near the front line and the relentless 250 mile trek through the Albanian mountains to her final escape from Scutari. Her story is exceptional, not only for the adventures she experi-enced but because she was motivated by bettering the lot of women. She led her mission to Serbia in the face of opposition from another famous Dorset figure, Sir Frederick Treves, who felt there was no place for wom-en in the Serbian conflict.

The photographs of Stobart’s adventures are highly graphic and do not flinch from the horrors of war. When Kodak developed them for her sub-sequent lecture tour of America, they were so impressed that they were blown up, mounted and hung in the Kodak head office. The exhibition will reveal the extraordinary story of a powerful and determined woman who frequented the salons of London Society but was also a feminist, playwright and farmer.

Numbers A father had taken his small son to church. The boy sat passively until

the minister announced: “We will now sing hymn four hundred and twen-ty-nine: ‘Ten Thousand Times Ten Thousand’….four hundred and twenty-nine.” Alarmed, the boy nudged his father: “Do we have to work this out?”

FIPPENNY GARDEN CLUB

Next Meeting: Monday 7th April 2014 Village Hall 7.30pm

‘WILDLIFE AND THE GARDEN’ A talk by Neil Lovesay

You may remember that Neil came to the club two years ago and gave

us a great talk about ‘gardening on clay’. It was practical, useful and very enjoyable. It will be interesting to catch up with him to hear about his ex-periences this winter. However, his talk to the club on this occasion is wildlife and the garden, a topic with wide appeal!

Potato Competition Potato Competition: the time is upon us, and I have the seed potatoes,

bags and compost all ready to go. Cost per entry is still only £1.50 with a chance to win £5.00 (plus you get the potatoes that you grow!). Call by at Brook House, Lower Street to pick up the goodies. Entries close Tuesday April 10th!

Coming Up: The next meeting is Monday May 12th and a rep-resentative from Castle Gardens will join us to demon-strate and talk about Summer Hanging Baskets. A very topical subject with Castle Gardens always providing good, lively speakers, so something to look forward to. Fred (Chairman)

Quiet A mother who took her fidgety seven-year-old to church finally had an

idea: about halfway through the long sermon she leaned over and whis-pered: “If you don’t be quiet, the minister is going to lose his place, and he will have to start all over again.” It worked!

Dorset Wildlife Trust North Dorset Group Wildlife photography Wednesday 16th April at 7.30pm in Fontmell Magna Village Hall.

Wildlife photography isn’t usually as ‘instant’ as the current trend of

‘selfie’ photographs that are flooding into the public domain. But don’t let that put you off. You don’t have to spend thousands of pounds on equipment, or days under a camouflage hide to get a great shot of your local wildlife, as a shepherdess discovered a few years ago when she won the overall BBC Country File national photographic competition using a compact digital camera.

Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Photographic and Video Group is run by re-

nowned local wildlife photographer, Stewart Canham, whose stunning work has appeared in magazines and local books, as well as DWT Calen-dars. He has helped many local people improve their photography skills, and get their work published. As he says, “Please don’t think you photo-graphs are not good enough.” If you have a camera (of whatever kind!) and are interested in wildlife photography, then come along to an illustrat-ed talk by Stewart Canham, who will show you just what you can achieve – even if it might take a little longer than snapping a ‘selfie’!

North Dorset DWT meetings are open to the public, cost £2 . Children free

COULD YOU HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

Charities & community groups in North Dorset rely on volunteers to support the work they do. Could you spare a few hours a month to be-come a volunteer? Volunteering is rewarding, worthwhile and a good way of making friends plus most importantly you could make a huge dif-ference to someone’s well-being. Some of the organisations currently looking for help include the Jobs Clubs, the Neighbourcar Schemes, local museums, Befriending schemes & various charity shops.

To find out more about opportunities come along to meet Gill Muhl, Volunteer Centre Dorset Outreach for North Dorset at a Drop-in Session or look at the website www.volunteeringdorset.org.uk.

On why a church should always resist change The Rectory St. James the Least

My dear Nephew Darren

I am not the least surprised you have got yourself into trouble; innova-tion is never to be encouraged. New ideas tend to cause revolutions. The move from incandescent light-bulbs to energy saving ones may ultimately change the Church of England.

Change is something everyone claims to be in favour of – provided it has no measurable effect on their own lives. I remember as a young curate once suggesting that at the Harvest Supper, tables might be enlarged so that eight people could sit together rather than the traditional six, thus helping more people get to know one another. The response would have been similar if I had suggested we travel to London to murder the Prime Minister. I was firmly told that tables for six had been perfectly adequate for parishioners in Queen Victoria’s day. For the rest of my curacy, I was regarded as a revolutionary, to be watched carefully.

So at your last visit to our Church, to suggest that our 11am Mattins may be moved to 10.30am, in order to encourage those who wanted have more of the day free to themselves, certainly lobbed a hand grenade among the post-Service coffee cups. The only person who was mildly in favour was Colonel Wainwright, who quickly realised that it would give him an extra half-hour at the gin and tonics before lunch.

Should you ever feel that people lack imagination, you should watch them in action when they find reasons for resisting an unwelcome sugges-tion. One said that the time couldn’t be moved, since it would then be too early for the local bus – omitting to mention that none of our congregation travel to church by bus and that the service doesn’t run on Sundays any-way. Another pointed out that it would confuse those who didn’t attend church – not explaining why if they never attended, it mattered what time the Service was. A third, rather touchingly mentioned that it wouldn’t give the rector time to enjoy his breakfast after the rigours of the 8am Ser-vice.

Your suggestion did, however, serve one useful purpose; it brought our congregation together in united opposition. They may not necessarily al-ways know what they are for, but they certainly know what they are against. For that, I thank you. Your loving uncle Eustace

Noise One night, a minister stumbled into the police stations with a black

eye. He explained he had heard a noise in his churchyard and gone to in-vestigate. The next thing he knew, he’d been hit in the eye and knocked out cold. An officer was sent to investigate and he returned some time later, also with a black eye. “Did you get hit by the same person?” his Inspector asked him. “No,” he said. “But I stepped on the same rake.”
