All children under school age have the right to a place in day care in Finland

In Vieremä day care is provided at day care centre, family day care or group day care centre

Day care fees are based on family size and income level

Fee: EUR 0–254/child/month

For the 2nd child EUR 0-229/month

In practice, all children take part in pre-school education

At day care centre or at school

Pre-school pupils pay 60 per cent of the total day care fee, if the child is in full day care

In addition, subject teachers are used at primary school (English)

Secondary School (grades 7-9), Subject Teachers

Compulsory education starts in August of the calendar year of a child’s 7th birthday

School year starts in the middle of August

and ends either at the end of May or at the beginning of June (at the end of week 22)

190 school days each year

Grades 1-6 have 19–25 lessons each week

Grades 7-9 have 30 lessons each week

Grades 1-2 also have morning and afternoon activities at school as follows:

6.30–9.00am, 12.00–5.00pm

Possibility for remedial teaching if needed

Extracurricular activities: PE and handicrafts/ technical work clubs in the afternoon

Takes usually three years

Classless, students select courses and compile their own individual timetables for each period

Total number of courses required: 75

Upper secondary school ends in national matriculation examination

Vocational schools prepare the students for entering the workforce
