S C OTSMAN A spellbinding story of friendship and survival,

magic and wonder, beauty and terror

Maresi came to the Red Abbey when she was thirteen, in the

Hunger Winter. Before then, she had only heard rumours of its

existence. In a world where girls aren’t allowed to learn or do as

they please, an island inhabited solely by women sounded like a

fantasy. But now Maresi is here, and she knows it is real.

Then one day Jai—tangled fair hair, clothes stiff with dirt, scars on

her back—arrives on a ship. She has fled to the island to escape

terrible danger and unimaginable cruelty. And the men who hurt

her will stop at nothing to find her.

What is the most awful or the most awesome thing that has happened to you?

Salla Simukka’s anticipated new book includes little awful stories and little awesome stories about young people’s lives. Why are under-fifteens not allowed in the basement? What happened in Dog’s Head Park? Who makes nightly visits in Klara’s solitary confinement room? What does it take to make out with lights on?

The flip book Turn Off the Light! Turn On the Light! shows the both sides of the matter; the stories mirror each other in surprising and exhilarating ways, and the genres range from horror to romance to sci-fi and realism.

“An interesting book not only because of Simukka’s excellent writing style, but also because of the new kind of concept.” – Luetaanko tämä blog, Finland

MARIA TURTSCHANINOFF is known for crafting lyrical, historically inspired fantasy stories starring strong female protagonists, and been compared to fantasy giants like Ursula K. Le Guin. The Red Abbey Chronicles is a historically inspired feminist fantasy saga, aimed at young adult audiences.

Book 1, Maresi, is a tale of friendship set in the Red Abbey, a refuge for women and girls that undergoes an attack.

Book 2, Naondel, tells the story of the First Sisters: how they fled from a harem and founded the abbey.

Book 3, Letters from Maresi, is an epistolary novel that follows Maresi after she leaves the Red Abbey to establish a school in her oppressed home province of Rovas. The return to her Northern home, and fitting in, is not easy even with all the knowledge she’s bringing with her, but she is determined to triumph over the difficulties. However, she does not need to make it alone, for life has yet another surprise in store: love.

“…complex, multilayered, and wholly believable. […] Feminists of all ages will appreciate this positive portrayal of a matriarchy” – Booklist on Naondel

In a barren land, when a little girl meets a gigantic cat that threatens to devour her, she makes it a smart offer. The girl leads the cat across the lands, looking for something to satiate its hunger before it eats her, but they encounter draught, destruction and people who have nothing to eat except their dreams.

When the cat gobbles up the girl, she finds something in its belly, something that has made it so hungry…

The Grumblebelly Cat is a classical fairytale about a contemporary subject. The detailed, monochrome illustrations by Teemu Juhani add another layer in the story.

“A linguistically clever adventure story, deep down about greed that nothing can satisfy, and about the courage that can live within the smallest of us. […] Excellent potential to address to readers all around the world.” – Finnish Literary Export Prize jury 2018

What Is the Night? is a literary tonic for insomniacs or those afraid of the dark. Divided into four parts, What is the Night? draws narratives from disciplines including astronomy, nocturnal nature, the physiology of sleep and dreams. Over four, beautifully illustrated chapters What is the Night? spins a captivating tale of true facts interspersed with myths and legends ranging from how the moon gets its glow to the ancient myths about how night was created.

What Is Water? is an eye-opening non-fiction book for the whole family about the most important substance in the world. It examines water from four different perspectives: The Planet, Nature, The Human and The Dive. By popularizing physics, geography and history, for example, we get to know over 60 ways in which water is connected with life on Earth.

Pieni Kettu päättää ryhtyä taivaanrannan maalariksi.

Se tahtoo löytää työtään varten maailman kauneimman

värin. Olisiko se kesänvihreä, Linnunradan valkoinen vai

tarujen sininen? Matkallaan Kettu kohtaa monenlaisia

olentoja, jotka kertovat sille lempiväreistään. Kettu

jatkaa kuitenkin etsintöjään, kunnes löytää lopulta

oman ratkaisunsa.  Herkkä, värejä hehkuva kuvakirja on todellinen luonnon

ja tarinoiden ylistys. Mila Teräksen ja Karoliina Pertamon

kaksi aiempaa kuvakirjaa ovat olleet lasten- ja nuorten-

kirjallisuuden Finlandia-ehdokkaina.
