FINMECCANICA IN THE ARCTIC SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Finmeccanica is a major world player for Marine and Coastal Systems and Sensors, is strongly involved in Earth Observation and Sensing Technologies and has been working in the Environment Monitoring area since the mid 1980s.In the Arctic we are already present with Earth Observation solutions (COSMO-SkyMed Receiving Station for the Finnish Meteorological Institute for maritime safety and transportation activities and for monitoring ice formation and movement in Norway), and Search & Rescue operations (SAR helicopters, AW101 helicopters to meet the Norwegian All Weather SAR Helicopter (NAWSARH) requirement and AW139s equipped for Search and Rescue operations for the Swedish Maritime Administration)

In particular, Finmeccanica aims to play a leading role in supporting the Arctic Sustainable Development, through solutions to: Support Arctic Route navigability Environment monitoring Increase Security/Safety Improve Indigenous people welfare

Through its distinctive competences, technologies and extensive experience in high technology sectors, Finmeccanica is able to offer a comprehensive, structured and scalable solution to fit main Arctic needs:

• Improved Maritime Situation Awareness, Traffic Monitoring and Safety

• Geo-information needs on the sea status (sea ice melting, environmental monitoring, …)

• Real (and near real) time information availability

12FINMECCANICA BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT - DECEMBER 2014

Finmeccanica has developed "IMSA" (Integrated Maritime Surveillance and Assistance System), a system able to provide

the integration of all the available technologies to ensure safety and environmental protection against all types of threats at

sea. IMSA can de deployed in the Arctic through:

VTMS (Vessel Traffic Management Systems) providing, through the integration of different sensors and mobile units ,

global capacity in terms of environmental protection, navigation, traffic control, operations support, search and rescue and

prevention of illegal activities

A command and control center, configured according to operational needs, able to integrate existing infrastructure and

networks by leveraging scalable and secure architectures and models.

Earth Observation data and services (Cosmo Sky-Med satellite constellation) which use the X-band SAR (Synthetic

Aperture Radar), based on AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) systems for monitoring ice melting, critical

infrastructure (i.e. pipelines and oil platforms) and for addressing oil spill and other threats;

Satellite communications;

Communication networks (HF / VHF / UHF) to connect command and control rooms with ships and vessels;

Fixed and rotary -wing aircraft in SAR (search and rescue) configuration

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), both rotary and fixed wing, to control and monitor large areas and capable of carrying

different types of surveillance radar and electro-optical sensors.

FINMECCANICA COMPREHENSIVE OFFER: SUPPORT INDIGENOUS PEOPLE WELFARE

16FINMECCANICA BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT - DECEMBER 2014

Monitoring and Information superiority: increase of commercial trade and navigation at high latitudes, and consequent new threats and challenges, request an appropriate level of surveillance to ensure the delivery of timely and complex information to decision makers and faster level of intervention in case of emergency.

Arctic Sustainable Development: Climate and environmental changes that are occurring in the Arctic are leading to a fast development of the area, which can enhance indigenous people condition: access to communication networks and to education and medical techniques, infrastructures and safety are main drivers for indigenous people welfare.

FINMECCANICA POTENTIAL ROLE IN THE ARCTIC

Finmeccanica has identified key enablers and technologies and can provide an integrated effective and sustainable collaborative approach; such key enablers allow to continuously improve industry competitiveness through integration, innovation and support to high-skilled workforce

Finmeccanica is continuously investing in dual-use and multipurpose capabilities, and is able to act as a Global High-Tech Industrial Partner for the Arctic joint sustainable development, also leveraging on potential collaboration with local industries
