Kouvola offers many wonderful opportunities for winter sports, such as skating and
cross-country or downhill skiing. The city has plenty of well-maintained and illuminated ski
tracks and you can even ski on dark winter evenings. Some ski tracks begin very near
the city centre. For those in search of speed, MIELAKKA DOWNHILL SKI CENTRE is
located just a couple of kilometres from the centre of Kouvola. Its slopes are suitable for
skiers of all levels, and you can easily access illuminated cross-country ski tracks from
the centre too. You can rent equipment on-site and find refreshments in the slope café
between descents. In winter, after the ice has formed, you can try out tour skating on
Kuusanlampi lake. There is also a ski track, sledging track and an ice track for cars.

Finns have a saying that goes: “forests are like churches”. They are places where you can relax and hide your troubles and worries among the small cracks in the rocks.
REPOVESI NATIONAL PARK and the Aarnikotka conservation area form
a unique district of wilderness consisting of approximately 45 km of easy, more difficult
and almost vertical trails. The trails traverse beautiful landscapes punctuated by cliffs,
water, woodlands and swamps. You can go trekking by canoe or rowing boat or take
a guided fishing trip. There are many local programme service companies that co-operate
with Metsähallitus (State Forest Enterprise). These companies base their operations
on the principles of sustainable nature tourism in the National Park. Repovesi National Park
is open all year round.
Begin your hike from one of three entrances (car parks): Lapinsalmi and Tervajärvi are
situated in the southern part of the national park, and Saarijärvi in the northern part.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE VERLA. The Verla Groundwood and Board Mill
has been the heart of the village of Verla since the 1870s, first as a working mill and,
from 1972, as a museum. Verla was accepted as a UNESCO World Heritage site
in 1996. Its magnificent setting by the rapids, the charming historical mill buildings and
their machinery, the mill owner’s mansion with its beautiful gardens, and the idyllic workers’
cottages give a clear picture of the Nordic forest industry’s earlier days.
The mill’s machinery and tools are in their original positions in an authentic environment.
The rocks above the Verlankoski rapids have prehistoric rock paintings dating back
about 6,000 years. At your service are also the little boutiques in the Mill Village,
the museum shop, and the lunch café in an old mill store house.
The Verla Mill Museum is open from May to September.
