It is that time of year again, ofexcitement and anticipation of theholidays. It also a time of year thatnaturally prompts review and takingstock of the many events that mayhave occurred for us in both ourpersonal and professional lives. It isa time of charity and fellowship.

This coming year, 2017, is especiallynoteworthy in that we are faced withinevitable changes of our status quothat will take place. This is not aforum in which I can or will expresspersonal beliefs of what thesechanges portend. I am simplystating the fact that our country as awhole will undergo many changes, whether we like them or not.

These changes will most certainlyaffect our way of looking at andconducting business. It is our job asan Association to develop acomprehensive strategy for movingforward in a cohesive and inclusivemanner. We are all vested in theconduct and commerce of ourindustry. EDUCATIONCOURSE REVIEWThis past November, the Industrial DiamondAssociation of America (IDA) presented thefifth “Superabrasive Materials, Principles andApplications” course. This year it was heldonce again at the YG-1 AdvancedManufacturing Center in Charlotte, NC. Apacked house of enthusiastic attendees filledthe classroom to hear instructors delivercomprehensive presentations on all aspects ofdiamond and cubic boron nitride (cBN).Expert IDA members presented sessions ongrinding with diamond and cBN, as well asmachining with polycrystalline diamond andcBN. There were also sessions on CVD

Diamond and drilling of composite materials specifically for aerospace.Instruction and demonstrations were given by these industry experts:

ATTILA SZUCS, Advanced Superabrasives Corp.BILL SHAFFER, Conicity TechnologiesJOHN WEBSTER, PhD, Cool-Grind TechnologiesED FRANCIS, Crystallume Engineered Diamond ProductsLUIS CARLOS CAETANO, Element Six US Corp.CHARLES NOVAK, Fives Landis Corp.DAVID SPELBRINK, LANDS Superabrasives Co.JOHN GUENTHER, Radiac AbrasivesJEFFREY BADGER, PhD, The Grinding DocAARON NOLAN, Worldwide Superabrasives Solids DivisionSHANE HOLLENBAUGH, YG-1 USABILL PULVERMACHER, YG-1 USAABDELATIF ATARSIA, PhD, MINICUT International Inc.

The IDA formulated this course to address anindustry-wide need for education on acceptedprinciples and practices in the industry. Theprogram gave attendees an education onsuperabrasive materials in the primary areas ofgrinding and machining with peripheralexplanation about other uses, such as a wearresistant materials and non-abrasive applications.

The classroom was filled with a broad range ofengineers, toolmakers, machine operators, suppliers, end users and other interested individuals. Somecurrently employ superabrasives in manufacturingoperations and others wanted to expand theirknowledge on how they could optimize the use of superabrasives and perhapsexpand their use into other areasand applications. Judging fromthe post-course survey, participants overwhelminglyfelt this was one of the bestcourses they had everattended on superabrasivesand were extremely impressedwith the content and knowledgeof the instructors.

Attendees want additional information and anexpanded agenda, for which they would happilyattend once again. In addition, they overwhelminglywould recommend this course to their colleagues. So,in the fall of 2017 the IDA will once-again hostanother group wanting to be educated onsuperabrasive materials principles and applications!

WHY ATTEND INTERTECH 2017?Industrial Diamond, Cubic Boron Nitride (cBN), CVD diamond, CVD Cubic Boron Nitride,Nanodiamond, Polycrystallines and related materials are making greater strides in most industries.Today, superabrasives or ultra-hard materials, as some call them, are not only serving as abrasivesfor material removal, but also acting as wear materials, heat sinks, knives, laser windows, heatshields for spacecraft, prosthetics, nanodiamond vehicles to carry disease fighting drugs and othergroundbreaking applications. These superabrasives are making it possible to economically usedifficult to machine and grind workpiece materials such as superalloys, high tech ceramics, metalmatrix composites, bimetals, cermets, glass and many other newly processed alloys andcomposites used in manufacturing operations. Leading manufacturers and service providers havemade a major commitment to take full advantage of the properties of diamond and other ultra-hardmaterials in their processes and applications. New workpiece materials, groundbreaking uses andan increased demand for productivity have heralded the need for superabrasives in everyapplication possible. Machine tools are now being designed to take full advantage of superabrasivecutting tools, wheels and blades and this is just the beginning.

Application of superabrasives has grown from the first use of natural diamond to grind tungstencarbide in the early 1940's to a broad range of high production applications across manymanufacturing and service industries. From grinding and machining of superalloys and high-techceramics in aerospace to metalworking of hardened steel, bi-metals or metal matrix composites in

automotive as well as the sawing or drilling of stone and concrete or new uses of nanodiamondand CVD diamond and cBN and cBN, literally every industry is seeing the benefits of diamondand other ultra-hard material properties. Industries have made great strides by increasingproductivity, reducing manufacturing & operating costs and implementing new technology.Whether it's the processing of stone from huge quarries, drawing wire,

providing laser windows, shaping wood and laminates, grindingglass, texturing the close tolerances for the discs in electronic

hard drives, providing medical breakthroughs in prosthetics ornanotechnology, growing large single crystals or coating basematerials with diamond film, superabrasives are industry'schoice for myriad solutions and cost effective processes.Much of this explosive growth has occurred in the last threedecades. It is vital for continued

prosperity that every company andindividual, working or doing business in

this burgeoning industry, devotes more timeand resources to user education andapplication development.

Norman Edgar Rohr • 1933-2016Norm was born in Columbus Ohio on March 21, 1933. He passed away on Sept. 28, 2016 inProvo Utah. He was married to Janet Bateman and had three children, Cindy, Mike and Scott.Norm was preceded in death by his son Michael and wife Janet. He graduated from BexleyHigh School and Ohio State University. In his life he had many careers. He worked for LazarusFederated stores, a barricade company in Detroit Michigan, and Hanover Sign Company inColumbus, Ohio. He had his own sign company called Art-Glo in Columbus, but he found hiscalling in the diamond business. He worked for GE Specialty Materials Department, the firstcommercial business for man-made industrial diamond. He then worked for The Van Itallie

Company, Warren Diamond and Engis Corporation. His colleagues at these businesses all commented Norm was morethan just an employee; he was a friend, a great addition and a team player. Norm was a valuable sales person becauseof his engaging personality, honesty and sincerity. Norm always took the high road even under difficult circumstancesand could always be counted on to make the right decision or recommendation. Norm was also heavily involved with theIndustrial Diamond Association of America which he dearly loved. Norm served on the Board of Directors and histremendous personality and exceptional people skills made his career so valuable and endearing to everyone. Norm'ssmile and pleasant character was infectious making it hard not to like him which was reflected in his customerrelationships and his interaction with his peers. Norm was part of the committee to organize the first INTERTECH in 2000and to this day his influence and vision can still be seen in the conferences very structure and content almost twodecades later. According to Kevin Kerns, “Norm was much more than the International Sales Manager during his tenureat Warren Diamond Powder Co; he was a colleague, friend and leader. He helped create the brand "Warren Diamond".Norm had the ability to make anyone smile and was masterful at telling jokes. One of his favorite lines "Hey Kev, did Iever tell you the one about....never mind if I did, because I would like to hear it again anyway! Then chuckle.” Normjoined Engis towards the end of his career but he brought a significant contribution to the company in relationshipbuilding with a target market. “Norm's smile and pleasant character was infectious making it hard not to like him whichwas reflected in his customer relationships and his interaction with his peers,” said Stephen Griffin, Director - EngisGroup Advisor. Norm loved the work, the people and the travel. Those of us who knew Norm were all blessed to haveknown him and lucky enough to have him, even for a brief time, in our lives. He was a major contributor to the industrialdiamond industry and he will be sadly missed by all his colleagues and friends.

INTERTECH 2017 WILL BE THE FEATURED CONFERENCE FOR NEWTECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT OF SUPERABRASIVES

AND SUPER-HARD MATERIALSINTERTECH 2017 is the leading International Technical Conference on industrial diamond, cubic boron nitride, polycrystallines, CVDdiamond, CVD Cubic Boron Nitride, Nanodiamond and other materials classified as superabrasives and ultra-hard materials.

INTERTECH 2017 will serve as a forum for leading experts representing international suppliers, manufacturers, research facilities, academia, endusers, machine tool builders and the scientific community. They will be presenting papers on subjects that will introducenew and thoughtprovoking technology on industrial and commercial levels. This will be an international “meeting of the minds” forevery aspect of ultra-hard material science.

MATERIALS FEATURED THEMEToday’s components in major industries like Aerospace and Automotive are made of exotic and difficult to machine and grind materialssuch as Titanium, High Silicon Aluminum, Superalloys, High Tech Ceramics, Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC),

Metal Matrix Composites, Carbon Fiber Composites, High Silicon Aluminum, Bi-Metals, Glass, Cermets and others. Inproduction operations these materials require the high productivity, close tolerances and superior performance attainable only bydiamond and cBN tooling for machining, grinding and other material removal and finishing operations.

SAN FRANCISCO IS A MAJOR ATTRACTION...San Francisco is The City by the Bay and renowned as The Paris of the West. It is one of the most famous American cities and overflowing

with cultural and historical wealth. INTERTECH has been held in many locations over the last 16 years and in 2017 this sensationalevent will be held in San Francisco, California USA. INTERTECH is known for excellent locations and exceptional service andINTERTECH 2017 will carry on that tradition at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront. We are anticipating theusual excellent attention and personal service that has become the standard of INTERTECH conferences. The Marriottboasts beautiful accommodations, magnificent meeting rooms and luxurious amenities. San Francisco is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California and the fourth-most populous city in the state. The CaliforniaGold Rush of 1849 brought rapid growth, but three-quarters of the city was destroyed by the 1906 catastrophicearthquake and fire. San Francisco was quickly rebuilt and has become known for its steep rolling hills, eclectic

mix of architecture, and landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge and the former Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary.Entrepreneurs sought to capitalize on the wealth generated by the Gold Rush with the founding of Wells Fargo and theBank of California. Development of the Port of San Francisco and the establishment of the overland rail system helpedmake the Bay Area a center for trade. Catering to the needs and tastes of the growing population, Levi Strauss opened a drygoods business and Domingo Ghirardelli began manufacturing chocolate. San Francisco is a major city known for itsflamboyant style, stately hotels, ostentatious mansions on Nob Hill, and a thriving arts scene.

San Francisco's Chinatown is the oldest and one of the largest in North America. The historic center of San Francisco isthe northeast quadrant of the city anchored by Market Street and the waterfront. It is here that the Financial Districtis centered, with Union Square, the principal shopping and hotel district nearby. Cable cars carryriders up steep inclines to the summit of Nob Hill, once the home of the city's business tycoons, and down to the waterfront tourist attractions of Fisherman's Wharf, and Pier 39, where manyrestaurants feature Dungeness crab from a still-active fishing industry. Also in this quadrantare Russian Hill, a residential neighborhood with the famously crooked Lombard Street,North Beach, the city's Little Italy and Telegraph Hill, which features Coit Tower.

YOU CAN BE A PART OF THIS EXCITING EVENT!We are now soliciting commercial and technical papers of approximately 30-45 minutes in lengththat address the research of these super-hard materials as well as the dynamics and application ofsuperabrasive systems in automotive and other industries as well (see: Areas of Consideration) with afocus on new technology, tooling, workpiece materials, machines and applications related to

increased PRODUCTIVITY and PERFORMANCE. Consideration for papers is beingmade at this time and abstracts are now being accepted; contact us today to be considered. This will be the most comprehensive event ever held on diamond and cubic boron nitridesuperabrasives used to machine and grind exotic and difficult to work raw materials forcomponents in major industries like Automotive, Aerospace and similar industries!Photos of San Francisco for INTERTECH 2017 courtesy of San Francisco Convention & Tourism Bureau.

INTERTECH 2017ORGANIZING COMMITTEESEvery INTERTECH we strive to improve all aspects of the conference. This yearwe not only will be offering our outstanding technical sessions, but we alsohave improved the features of the conference by structuring the programaround Materials used for components in all manufacturing industries and thesuperabrasives (diamond and cubic boron nitride) used to fabricate thosedifficult to machine and grind components. To meet this challenge we haverestructured the organizational committees for INTERTECH. This year theINTERTECH and the Industrial Diamond Association of America (IDA) are proudto introduce the three Committees that are ultimately responsible for puttingtogether INTERTECH 2017. The three committees are the STEERING &PLANNING COMMITTEES and TECHNICAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE. Thesecommittees have been working together to produce the best combination ofpresentations and contributors to represent both the Technical and PracticalApplication sides of the superabrasive industry. The Steering & PlanningCommittees change each INTERTECH and consist of notable business leadersfrom across the industry. They have dedicated their time and efforts to see thatINTERTECH 2017 is a success on every level from the promotional materials, venue & speakers to the program, tabletop exhibits and daily events. Theirefforts constitute years of planning and coordination to bring about thisInternational Event.

Someone asked me recently my thoughts onSmart Manufacturing, the so-called IT revolutionin the factory. They couldn’t believe that I didn’tsee Smart Manufacturing as the salvation ofAmerican manufacturing. Don’t misunderstandme; Smart Manufacturing has a place inreviving American manufacturing. I have asmart factory and we employ the latest in pickto light systems, automated CNC machines andseamless integration from order inquiry toaccounts receivable. But that isn’t where I

started my revolution and you shouldn’t either. The problem with manyCEO’s today is they have turned away from the astonishing potentialof the workforce and turned toward automation instead ... big mistake, but I hear it all the time. What is the sense in spending millions onautomating your factory if your workforce could care less? What is thesense in buying expensive machine tools if your workforce can•t waitto get to the bowling alley, yet drag themselves to work? I’ll tell youwhy, because too many CEO’s view their employees as expandableassets, they should view them as renewable resources and renewthem. Don’t bother with Smart Manufacturing if you have a dumbworkforce. If your workforce is dumb, it’s your fault, not theirs. Don’tbother with an IT revolution, your revolution has to start with a “SmartWorkforce”. You have to make a new compact with your employees. You need to ignite the human spirit in your workforce. Imagine this, what would happen if every day your employees came to workexcited to do better today than they did yesterday? Imagine how yourcompany would soar if your employees were absolutely dedicated tosupporting the mission and each other in attaining it? Imagine what itwould be like if your employees were like Cirque de Soleil performers? This is the place where I get blank stares from many CEO’s; they don’tlike the “soft stuff.” “Give me the hard stuff,” they say. “Tell me how tobuild a smart factory, not a smart workforce,” is what I often hear. Ithas to be the other way around. Start by building a smart workforce, workforce that is engaged, enlightened, and empowered, a workforce

that trusts in its leadership, a workforce that believes in its leadership.Tall order to be sure, especially if the leadership is a bunch ofboneheads that care more about depreciation than employeeengagement. Here are four key ways to start: 1. At the top build leadershipcredibility. The only way to have leadership credibility is if yourleaders demonstrate key values of respect and integrity. 2. Leadersneed to treat their employees with respect but many don’t. In a recentHarvard Business School study of 20,000 employees half of them didnot feel respected by their leaders. Respect was rated by theparticipants as more important than anything else, includingcompensation. Imagine how the company performance wouldskyrocket if you solved this one problem alone. 3. Leaders have todemonstrate integrity. In study after study, integrity is a key attribute inleaders that people admire and want to follow. So integrity is a keypart of building credibility. Leaders also need integrity in everythingthey say. You can’t be like many leaders and “tell half the truth, hopingthe other half doesn’t show up”. You have to be bone honest all thetime. You have to tell them what they need to know. If the company isheaded for trouble, tell them. If the company needs to pivot into newmarkets or products, tell them and tell them why. Tell them everything. You would be amazed at how smart your workforce can be if you givethem half a chance. I always say “trust in truth”. 4. This is not just forthe top, your entire workforce has to embrace the values of respectand integrity. But you cannot expect “people below to do what the topwill not”. You may have leaders that lost credibility long ago. Theycan’t get it back. You have to replace them.Smart manufacturing starts at the top, not the bottom. Smartmanufacturing starts with creating a new compact with the workforce.Smart manufacturing starts with people, not machines. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL TO USA As in the past, we are looking forward to a large contingent of Internationalattendees traveling to San Francisco, California for INTERTECH 2017 and as muchas possible, we will assist attendees in obtaining a Visa. Keep in mind the staff forINTERTECH has little or no influence or ability to "speed up" the process. That is alldetermined by the attendee's country of origin and the US Embassy in that country.Advance travel planning and early Visa application are extremely important, since

Visa applications are subject to a greater degree of scrutiny than in the past. It is recommended that requests fora travel Visa to the USA be submitted to your local embassy as soon as possible and at least 3-4 monthsbefore INTERTECH 2017.

DO YOU REQUIRE AN INVITATION LETTER FOR A VISA? If you require a formal invitation letter for a Visato enter the USA and attend INTERTECH 2017 please send an email request to [email protected] and request an

invitation letter. In this request you must provide: 1) The dates you will arrive and depart the USA; 2) Your full name; 3) Your companyname; 4) Your job title; 5) Your complete mailing address; 6) Your email address; and 7) Your Telephone number.

WEBSITES FOR VISA INFORMATION A citizen of a foreign country, wishing to visit the USA, generally must first obtain a Visa. Ifyou go to the website: http://travel.state.gov/visa/visa_1750.html you will find the Visa section for Temporary Visitors to the USA:http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/visit/visitor.html This site is an official source of information about the United States of America(U.S.A.) Visa policy and procedures and can assist in explaining new Visa policies and procedures for visitors to the United States.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO OBTAIN A VISA? Recent changes in U.S. laws governing Visa policy and procedures haveincreased the amount of time it can take to obtain a Visa. APPLY EARLY! Even with the Visa processing improvements that have beenmade and will continue to be made, it is inevitable that delays will sometimes occur. Processing times will vary. The city also ranked second for friendliness,hotels/inns, and ethnic food.
