Established in 1993, Parkwood is a privately owned New Zealand family business synonymous with craftsmanship and the manufacture of best quality entrance doors, shutters and interior doors.

Our range is extensive, featuring door designs in three distinct materials - timber, aluminium and composite.

WHY PARKWOOD?


Solid Timber Entrance Doors

The Parkwood range of Solid Timber doors are designed for use in weather protected situations. Timber is a beautiful natural product, and creates a solid, attractive entry door. However, it will not last if it is exposed to the elements without adequate protection.

In basic terms, this means the door must: - Have a minimum porch roof or protection of 1200mm - Not be exposed to driving rain or direct sunlight for more

than 4 hours per day - Be pre-finished (coated) in a film forming product, on

ALL 6 faces - Have a well-maintained coating - Film forming products exclude oils and stains, but

includes products in many desirable colours, from these brands: Sikkens, Cabots and Intergrain

- Your Parkwood solid timber door carries a 5 year warranty if these requirements are met.

The Parkwood Guarantee is VOID if: - An oil or penetrating stain is used as the finish – even if

recommended by a manufacturer of such products - A timber door has insufficient cover

(min 1.2m) - A timber door is exposed to driving rain or long periods

of sunlight (more than 4 hours per day) - A timber or fibreglass door is finished in a dark colour,

as this attracts the heat.

NOTE: Due to seasonal and geographical variations in atmosphere, moisture can cause a certain amount of shrinkage or expansion in a product – this is not a defect - Natural variations in colour of timber is not considered

a defect - Door must be stored in a clean, dry area away from

direct sunlight - Parkwood will not be held responsible for additional

charges of hanging or painting or any other charges arising from the replacement of products

Aluminium Entrance Doors

Aluminium front doors can be exposed to extreme weather and are covered by a five year warranty.

Some powdercoats have a 10 or even 15 year warranty. Powder coat finishes require a certain level of care and maintenance to meet the long warranty periods. Check online for a care guide, and see an example of a warranty. Colours shown on the website and in Parkwood brochures are indicative only. Please request actual samples before confirming your choice of colour.

WARRANTYParkwood’s range of front doors include an option for every entrance situation. What range you choose depends on various factors related to your entrance, such as its exposure to the weather. Correct care of your door will ensure it will last for years to come.

Parkwood accepts no liability for mistaken impressions gained from drawings or photographs of our products. Our designs and specifications are subject to change and improvement over time and actual product and specifications can sometimes differ slightly from what is shown. Check the latest written specifications with your supplier or ask to view an actual sample if in doubt.

Duramax Composite Entrance Doors

Duramax Composite front doors are warranted for 10 years in fully exposed conditions.

Some points to remember when painting or staining your composite door:

- Colours with LRV of more than 10% must be used (see your paint manufacturer for the LRV rating

- Both sides of the door must be coated in the same products and colour

- Parkwood don’t recommend dark gloss colours as they can show a slight ‘wave’ in the door skin

Warranty Plus

Parkwood now offer clients a Full Cover warranty option on all doors! This will be in addition to the Standard Warranty which covers 5 years with full replacement of the door if faulty (and meets warranty conditions).

The ‘Warranty Plus Cover’ comes at a small cost as a ‘Peace of Mind Warranty’.

The beautiful powder coat finish is very low maintenance and compliments aluminium window joinery. Aluminium doors are durable in sutuations exposed to harsh weather, and won’t move or bow.

Most designs come in Thermtek or Strata. Thermtek is Parkwood’s own technology that enhances the doors thermal properties. This helps to keep the warmth in winter, and the heat out in summer.

Duramax Composite Doors are the best on the market

Duramax Composite entry doors are suitable for entrances exposed to extreme weather. Duramax doors look like wood, but they don’t warp or rot like wood, or dent or rust like steel. In fact, Duramax doors need only a fraction of the maintenance that wood and steel doors do.

The Duramax door is filled inside with an exceptional heat - and cold - resistant material that helps keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer.

Duramax doors are made with a fibreglass skin, resin/fibreglass edge and foam-filled core. LVL stiles and rails inside the resin provide more stability against warping/twisting and provide blocking for hardware fixing points such as locks, hinges and handles.

Glass is beaded in using a cassette bead system that seals from any water entering inside. Different line detailing is created on the door surface by etching a ‘U’ shaped groove into the skin.

• Custom sized (non standard sizes) are best to get Parkwood to trim/size as we know the trim ability of the slabs. This also ensures that you don’t void your warranty. In this situation you will not be able to further trim as you may be jeopardising the integrity of the remaining resin on the edges.

• Standard/stock sized doors that a client needs to ease or trim to fit in an out of square frame or where the door is a bit tight in the frame. You may trim up to 10mm off any edge without voiding the warranty. This means that you can trim a door up to 20mm in height and width.

Duramax doors can be painted or stained. The woodgrain finish is perfect for staining as the embossed skin absorbs the stain in a similar way to timber, creating a timber-look. Parkwood does not pre-finish this range unless especially requested.

Duramax front doors are warranted for 10 years in fully exposed conditions.

Some points to remember when painting or staining your fibreglass door:

• Colours with LRV of more than 10% must be used (see your paint manufacturer for the LRV rating)

• Both sides of the door must be coated in the same products and colour

• Parkwood don’t recommend dark gloss colours as they can show a slight ‘wave’ in the door skin

Designed for use in weather-protected entrance ways, Parkwood Solid Timber doors are all made in New Zealand by local craftsmen from the finest quality timbers. Manufactured with wider stiles and rails, and raised and fielded panels, they combine strength with elegance. Western Red Cedar is the most popular timber for a stain quality door. Other options, including paint quality timbers, can be selected from the standard range of timbers below.

WESTERN RED CEDARDrawn from the beautiful Canadian forests, this product is in hot demand worldwide. It’s rich red colour, superior stability and variety of grains and shades has caught the eye of the international stage. Although it is still a favourite of timber joinery, it is now a premium timber and this is reflected in the price.

AMERICAN WHITE ASHThe light-coloured hardwood that is reasonably close to American White Oak. It has creamy white to light brown heartwood with white coloured sapwood, with uniform texture. White Ash’s beautiful grain an versatility bring the much sought after natural charm of timber to many high-end residential and commercial projects.

ROSEWOODA hardwood that is reliable for joinery! It ranges in darker colours from yellow-brown to gold and red-brown. It has remarkable physical beauty and an amazing range of uses and durability, matched only by timbers which are either more expensive or do not possess the same physical attraction or working qualities.

RADIATA PINEParkwood uses pine that is precision sawn and kiln dried, and then dressed on all four sides. The result is a dimensionally stable, clear, wood product. The trees from which Clears are made are carefully selected, managed and processed to achieve a product that is reliable and strong, but that has high visual and aesthetic appeal. (For oversize doors, Vulcan is recommended for stablility).

VULCANStability. Resistance. Durability. A timber that will never move.Chocolate brown depths and even grain all finished nicely with engineered lamination lines. This exciting new brand is a breakthrough for the timber world. It is thermally modified in specialist computer-monitered kilns. The individual pores of the timber no longer absorb moisture, meaning it will no longer move or change like other natural products. This patent-protected product has a laminated structure for even greater strength and is FSC certified.


THICKER FOR ADDITIONAL STRENGTH

Parkwood entrance doors are 41mm thick. This gives additional strength to the door and a satisfying solid feel with a surer shut.

MOISTURE TESTED & SEASONED

At Parkwood we use low temperature kilns for drying timber with a very high volume of airflow. We then fillet stack timber for 20-30 days to let any moisture spread out evenly over the board to avoid further movement within the timber later on. All our timber then goes through a moisture-testing machine to check that the moisture percentage is right.

When selecting your door manufacturer or supplier you should be fully aware of the problems that can come up if the door design has been ill conceived or wrongly constructed.

Compliment the timeless tradition of your timber doors with a natural timber frame. Parkwood will pre-hang your doors and sidelight in an exterior frame and deliver them ready for quick installation.

EXTERIOR WEATHER SEAL

All Parkwood doors use a seal around the inside of the frame. The seals protects the doors from the weather, water and even insects. They also stop the doors from banging loudly against the door frame when it closes. For more sealing options contact your local Parkwood retailer.

There have been numerous articles or recommendations on staining timber doors, some of which are disputable. It is important to select a front door finish that allows for movement of the timber as well as maintenance and preservation of the exterior door long term.

Let’s critique some of the finishes available on the market today.

Parkwood does not recommend urethanes for front doors: • Urethanes don’t have UV absorbing

chemicals for UV protection causing product failure

• Hard shell finish - no flexibilty • Non-micro porous which does not allow

subtrate to breath. Moisture can build up behind the polyurethane causing it to blister and finally flake off.

• The product failure of polyurethane finish will cause an entry door to need major restoration after 12-18 months

These finishes form a very thin film on the surface of the timber and can only be regarded as temporary wood protection agents

• Weather erodes the finish - moisture gets into the timber resulting in the timber cracking and splitting

• Re-known for mould growth • Generally requires recoating every 12 - 18

months

The use of vegetable oil (including linseed oil) for finishing wooden entrance doors is not recommended.

• Some unmodified oils are actually a good source for mould and lichen

• Generally requires recoating approximately every 7-10 months

• No product breakdown or discoloration (silvering) due to high UV protection.

• No signs of cracking or flaking on the surface due to flexibility of the micro porous coating

• Excellent Water repellence • Builds an excellent film giving a high

quality finish • Generally re top-coat after approimately 3

years in high sun areas

Staining or oiling front entrance doors

Recently developed alkyl resins incorporate a greater flexibility and UV light resistance than earier products and promising results have been obtained from exterior weathering trials.

All of the above are the results of trials taken by BRANZ in November 1998 and confirms that for exterior entrance doors a firm forming product is by far the best use.

SOLID TIMBER INTERIOR DOORSWhen choosing interior doors, you should first consider what design best fits the period or style of the home you’re building or renovating.

How important is consistency? Is it important that the inside look ties in with the impression of the building from the outside? Consider the ‘feel’ you want - such as whether you want glass to give a more open feel between rooms. Then look at the type of timber you’re using and whether you are going to paint or stain the wood.

• Contact your local door pre-hanger to have your door supplied pre-hung in a frame.

• Solid timber doors give a far better acoustic rating than a hollow core constructed door - up to 150% more sound proof.

• All Parkwood interior doors are finished through high speed sanding machines, giving the timber a quality smooth surface ready for finishing.

A fixed blade shutter with chunky blade design, Parkwood Mode comes in either open blade 42 x 10mm or closed blade option. Originally created as an adjustable shutter, the innovative Retro shutter is ideal for controlling light flow and privacy. Retro shutters are for internal use only and are available polished or stained.
