FRANCE

A wide range of star performers from every region of France, including a signature vin jaune from Jura, plus a brace of wines from Château Montrose that showcase Bordeaux’s triumphant 2000 and 2005 vintages.

BORDEAUXRED WINE

CHÂTEAU COUFRAN 2009AC Haut-Médoc

TASTING NOTE: The quality of the fruit and tannins are very pretty here. It’s full-bodied, with round velvety texture and a delicious finish. Very impressive. Drink or hold. Score: 92 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, July 13, 2014)

13399 (XD) 750 mL $45.00

CHÂTEAU DE FERRAND 2015AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé

TASTING NOTE: Aromas of attractive red flowers, black cherries, chalk and deep cedary wood. This wine has a super fresh and tight-knit feel to it. The palate is laced up tight with fine, smooth tannins. Reserved and elegant. Full of finesse. Best from 2022. Score: 94 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 2, 2018)

14271 (XD) 750 mL $78.00

CHÂTEAU FLEUR CARDINALE 2015AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé

TASTING NOTE: Super rich baking spices across ripe dark plums in a very suave and attractively styled nose. The palate has incredible depth and succulently seductive, fleshy plum flavors. Wow. Try from 2022. Score: 96 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 2, 2018)

13413 (XD) 750 mL $106.00

CHÂTEAU GISCOURS 20163e cru, AC Margaux

TASTING NOTE: This nearly 200-acre estate lies in the south of the Margaux appellation. The wine is another great success in a series of superb years. It is rich but the structure and finely textured fruit give it style and longevity. Drink the wine from 2026. Cellar Selection. Score: 96 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, May 1, 2019)

13415 (XD) 750 mL $155.00

CHÂTEAU HAUT-BERGEY 2002AC Pessac-Léognan

TASTING NOTE: Red-ruby. Sexy aromas of blackberry, chocolate, coffee, smoke and game; a bit Burgundian. Then smoky, pliant and seamless, with a plump middle and moderate density. Finishes with smooth, slightly dusty tannins and lingering notes of baking spices and nutty oak. My favorite of these three vintages today, showing considerable early appeal. Score: 89 (Stephen Tanzer, vinous.com, May 2005)

14774 (XD) 750 mL $37.00

CHÂTEAU LE CAILLOU 2016AC Pomerol

TASTING NOTE: A dense and layered red with blackberry and blueberry character, a dense palate and a long and flavorful finish. Excellent potential here. Score: 93-94 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, April 4, 2017)

45682 (XD) 750 mL $70.00

CHÂTEAU MONTROSE 20002e cru, AC Saint-Estèphe

TASTING NOTE: This is dense and inky in colour with a nose that has layers of soft tobacco combined with rich cassis fruits and liquorice. On the palate, it just powers on through, with completely melted tannins that are holding up the fruit gently but firmly and a mouthwatering finish of slate and salty caramel. It’s a gorgeous wine with so much to enjoy – full and just starting to stride forward into the next stage of its life as all of the 2000s in the line-up are. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Harvest 22 September to 7 October. Drinking window: 2019-2045. Score: 97 (Jane Anson, decanter.com, Oct. 16, 2019)

45336 (XD) 750 mL $479.00 CHÂTEAU MONTROSE 20052e cru, AC Saint-Estèphe

TASTING NOTE: Tasted at the vertical in London, the 2005 Montrose came and delivered the goods. This was the best example of the 2005 that I have tasted, perhaps a wine that is going to prove that, the longer wine lovers can resist temptation. It is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3.5% Cabernet Franc and .5% Petit Verdot picked between 23 September and 9 October. The bouquet is extremely detailed, displaying more red berry fruit compared to the 2010 Montrose that leans towards black. Graphite and cedar emerge with time, even an unusual floral scent that is uncommon with respect to this property, whilst all the time retaining fantastic focus and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a ferrous tincture on the entry. There are the first signs of secondary notes (dried leaves and bay leaf), but it is the tannic backbone and the precision that really defines this Montrose at the moment. For certain, it is masculine and structured, yet it has enormous potential, perhaps more than was suggested when it was first released? This is for the long term, but you know that already. Tasted June 2016. Drink date: 2025-2065. Score: 97 (Neal Martin, robertparker.com, March 31, 2017)

579706 (XD) 750 mL $374.00

CHÂTEAU PRIEURÉ-LICHINE 20164e cru, AC Margaux

TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Prieuré-Lichine is all class. Floral, silky and nuanced to the core, the 2016 is a wine of pure and total seduction. Freshly cut flowers, vibrant red fruit and creamy tannins all add to the wine’s undeniable allure. In 2016, Prieuré-Lichine is all class, not to mention one of the sleepers of the vintage. Don’t miss it! Tasted two times. Drinking window: 2022-2041. Score: 96 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Jan. 2019)

10646 (XD) 750 mL $103.00

BURGUNDYCÔTE DE NUITSRED WINE

DOMAINE ROBLOT-MARCHAND VOSNE-ROMANÉE 2017AC

Domaine Roblot-Marchand has been a family-run operation since 1910. It controls prime sites and premier-cru parcels in Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin. Aromatic and structured, Pinot Noir from Vosne-Romanée is renowned for striking that fine balance between power and elegance. These are among the finest and noblest of all red Burgundies.

13752 (XD) 750 mL $86.00

FAIVELEY MAZIS-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a detailed, mineral-driven bouquet with precise red fruit intermingling with sous-bois and light rose petal aromas. This is a killer combination of power and finesse. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins and a perfectly judged bead of acidity. Silky in texture, it fans out with marvelous precision towards the finish. The oak is seamlessly integrated. A fabulous wine from start to finish. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Drinking window: 2023-2055.

Score: 97 (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Oct. 2019)

13411 (XD) 750 mL $397.00 ROCHE DE BELLENE LES CAZETIERS GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 1ER CRU 2014AC

TASTING NOTE: Bright medium red. Pure but reticent nose hints at raspberry, spices, rose petal, white tobacco and underbrush; a darker blueberry element emerges with air. Concentrated, tactile and harmonious, with enticing sucrosité leavened by sexy saline minerality. Very light on its feet and sharply delineated. Mounts steadily on the back end, finishing subtle and very long, with a penetrating quality that excites the salivary glands. Score: 91-93 (Stephen Tanzer, vinous.com, Jan. 2016)

12506 (XD) 750 mL $125.00

CÔTE DE BEAUNERED WINE

BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS LES LAVIÈRES SAVIGNY-LÈS-BEAUNE 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Soft wood combines with cool and pure but decidedly ripe red and dark pinot fruit, spice and marked earth/sauvage nuances. The delicious and round medium weight flavors are quite generously proportioned with an opulent mid-palate and much better concentration, all wrapped in a lingering and nicely complex finale. I like this quite a bit though there is a nit which is noticeable warmth and while it’s not enough to ruin the balance, neither is it invisible. Drink: 2025+. Top value. Score: 90-92 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, April 10, 2019)

13414 (XD) 750 mL $63.00

CAPUANO-FERRERI MARANGES LA FUSSIÈRE 1ER CRU 2017AC

The La Fussière premier cru was established in 1989 and is situated close to Santenay at the southern end of the

Côte de Beaune. The vines of this relatively obscure appellation are planted in brown limestone and marl. This wine will be crafted to emphasize the fruit and overall balance. Expect ripe dark fruit and a refined mineral undertone, and pair with veal.

13750 (XD) 750 mL $50.00

DOMAINE DU PAVILLON CLOS DES MARÉCHAUDES ALOXE-CORTON 1ER CRU 2017Monopole, AC(Albert Bichot)

TASTING NOTE: Clos des Maréchaudes is an excellent monopole holding in the lower part of the hill of Corton. It’s quite a warm site but the richer soils preserved precious water in 2017 and have produced a wine that’s fresh, balanced and detailed, with adroitly integrated 40% new wood and underlying grip and backbone. Drinking window: 2021-2027. Score: 93 (Tim Atkin, MW, decanter.com, Oct. 22, 2018)

29504 (XD) 750 mL $96.00

DOMAINE JEAN-MARC & HUGUES PAVELOT LES BRESSANDES BEAUNE 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: A discreet application of wood sets off the softly spicy nose of earthy dark berries. There is once again a caressing mouth feel to the delicious middle weight flavors that possess a bit more mid-palate stuffing as well as a bit more depth and persistence on the balanced bitter cherry pit-inflected finale. One to check out. Drink: 2024+. Top value. Score: 91 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, April 10, 2019)

DOMAINE BELLEVILLE LES BOUDRIÈRES PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Sourced from 55-year-old vines on clay-limestone slopes, this is more closed up at this early stage than the Rully, even though it’s a village wine. It takes its time in the glass, slowly revealing flaked pastry and grilled almond notes pepped up by white pepper and even cinnamon on the finish. It’s a great quality wine with lots of layers, walls and kick. One of my favourites in the lineup. Drinking window: 2019-2032. Score: 94 (Jane Anson, decanter.com, May 22, 2019)

13407 (XD) 750 mL $91.00

DOMAINE ROUX PÈRE & FILS LES MACHERELLES CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: There is a whiff of matchstick to the cool and more elegant aromas of white peach, pear, citrus zest and a mild hint of pineapple. The succulent but energetic middle weight flavors possess better depth and persistence on the reasonably well-balanced finish where the only nit is a subtle trace of warmth. Note that this could easily be enjoyed young. Drink: 2023+. Score: 90 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, June 10, 2019)

182360 (XD) 750 mL $125.00

LOUIS LATOUR MONTRACHET GRAND CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: This too is very aromatically restrained with its elegant if timid aromas of essence of pear, apple, citrus, spice, pain grillé and exotic tea. Here too there is outstanding volume to the dense, concentrated and powerful flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that, in much the same way as the Bâtard, imparts a borderline chewy quality to the hugely long and super-complex finale. This is marvelous and also packed with excellent potential. Drink: 2029+. Don’t miss! Score: 94-96 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, June 10, 2019)

78428 (XD) 750 mL $1042.00

DOMAINE TAWSE CLOS DU ROI BEAUNE 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Beaune Clos du Roi 1er Cru contains around 40% whole cluster fruit from the first red vineyard picked by the domaine, as the pH goes up quickly here, and matured in 30% new oak. It has an attractive bouquet of raspberry coulis, crushed strawberry and perhaps a little more sous-bois/tobacco than the Teurons by comparison. The harmonious palate is nicely structured with a fine bead of acidity and a precise and quite persistent finish. Excellent. Drinking window: 2021-2035. Score: 90-92 (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Jan. 2019)

13757 (XD) 750 mL $62.00

WHITE WINE

AU PIED DU MONT CHAUVÉ CLOS ST-JEAN CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU 2015AC(Domaines et Maison Famille Picard)

TASTING NOTE: Right on the edge of the village, this vineyard is one of the oldest walled clos in Burgundy. This 2015 is sumptuous and ripe, full of generous fruit and splashes of toastiness. The wine already has its fruit and minerality in balance. It is tempting to drink it now, but wait for the best until 2020. Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Oct. 1, 2018)

11764 (XD) 750 mL $107.00

BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS CORTON-CHARLEMAGNE GRAND CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Concentrated, with a solid structure keeping this sleek and long. Lemon, apple, vanilla and pastry spice notes ply the dense texture, buoyed by vivid acidity. Balanced, with a long aftertaste echoing the fruit and spice flavors, retaining a chalky feel. Best from 2021 through 2029. Collectibles. Score: 94 (Bruce Sanderson, winespectator.com, July 31, 2019)

172460 (XD) 750 mL $262.00

MAISON ROCHE DE BELLENE VIEILLES VIGNES CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Potel’s Roche de Bellene’s 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet is both rich and biting. Offering a voluptuous texture cut by fresh acidity and a significant mineral texture. It bumps and jives and offers great textural appeal. Rounded but racy with an oak treatment that co-mingles with the juicy abundance of fruit that includes sour lemon and grapefruit on the palate. Excellent length. Score: 92 (Sara d’Amato, winealign.com, Nov. 11, 2019)

241158 (XD) 750 mL $90.00

P. DUBREUIL-FONTAINE PERNAND-VERGELESSES BLANC 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: A more restrained if similar nose offers more floral influence while the equally intense, delicious and stony middle weight flavors deliver good cut if only moderate depth on the chiseled bitter lemon-inflected finish. Drink: 2021+. Score: 88 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, June 10, 2019)

DOMAINE WILLIAM FÈVRE BEAUROY CHABLIS 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: (all whole clusters) Dark bright-rimmed ruby. Vibrant aromas of fresh, spice-tinged dark berries and candied flowers develop a suggestion of olive as the wine opens up. Clean and nervy in style, offering energetic black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a suave touch of Asian spices. J. DENUZIÈRE CONDRIEU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: White pepper, ginger and citrus notes mark the nose of the 2017 Condrieu. While it’s plump on the palate, it’s only medium-bodied, with melon and apricot flavor and a long, spice-driven finish. Drink it over the next year or two. Drink date: 2018-2020. DOMAINE LABRUYÈRE COEUR DE TERROIR VIEILLES VIGNES MOULIN-À-VENT 2015AC

TASTING NOTE: A big and powerful Beaujolais from this warm vintage. It sits in the palate like a dense and rich Hermitage. Full-bodied, layered and rich. So much fruit and ripe tannins. Goes on for minutes. Drink or hold. Score: 95 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Jan. 22, 2019)

Gains sweetness with air and finishes minerally, seamless and

SOUTHERN RHÔNERED WINE

CHÂTEAU SIMIAN LES GRANDES GRENACHIÈRES D’HIPPOLYTE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: Darker hued and more concentrated than the regular cuvée, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape les Grandes Grenachieres d’Hippolyte comes from old-vine Grenache in the Cabrières and Palestor lieux-dits. Full-bodied, plush and velvety, it delivers oodles of rich black cherry fruit, with a judicious dusting of spice box-like nuances on the long finish. It should drink well for at least a decade. Drink date: 2018-2030. Score: 95 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Aug. 31, 2018)

TASTING NOTE: An impressive pure Grenache from la Crau (ouest), the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape les Larmes Papales aged entirely in demi-muids. Yet the delicacy of its garrigue aromas persist, entwined among silky cherries and raspberries. It’s full-bodied but leaves a light impression on the palate, its pretty fruit underscored by hints of pencil shavings on the long, elegant finish. It’s a terrific effort from this largely unheralded producer. Drink date: 2018-2030. Score: 95 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Aug. 31, 2018)

PAUL BLANCK FURSTENTUM RIESLING 2016AC Alsace Grand Cru

TASTING NOTE: Wet stone, with zesty aromas of fresh lemon and lime peel, creates a breezy fresh nose. With a little more air, riper citrus notions of orange and mandarin show through, but the palate majors resolutely on zesty lemon freshness. This is dry and streamlined but has a lovely hinterland of rich citrus flavors. Lovely and long with a lip-smacking finish, this is delightful now, but with great potential. SCHLOSS GOBELSBURG RIED GAISBERG 1ÖTW RIESLING 2017DAC Kamptal

TASTING NOTE: Moosbrugger’s 2017 Zöbing Ried Gaisberg “1ÖTW” is as pure as intensely aromatic on the nose. Round, lush and fine on the palate, with crystalline structure and salinity and a velvety texture, this is still characterized by the lees’ aging. This is a salty-piquant, pure and even crunchy Riesling with great intensity and length. A great wine that should be cellared for 5+ years. Drink date: 2022-2038. CLEMENS BUSCH MARIENBURG FALKENLAY GG RIESLING TROCKEN 2016Qualitätswein

TASTING NOTE: From weathered gray slate, Busch’s 2016 Pündericher Marienburg Riesling GG “Falkenlay” offers a clear, pure and fine, highly complex and smoky bouquet of crushed stones and bright fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lush and salty, this is an enormously tensioned and intense Riesling that reveals a concentrated fruit core with a long, elegant and tensioned finish. The texture is almost silky and the minerality perfectly integrated. This is one of the finest of the 2016 GGs from the Mosel. Bottled in late September 2017. Drink date: 2021-2036. ZELTINGER SCHLOSSBERG RIESLING SPÄTLESE* 2014Prädikatswein(Selbach-Oster)

TASTING NOTE: Selbach admitted to having been swayed by marketing considerations to label this wine as

“one-star” Spätlese rather than as Auslese. By whatever name, it represents a luscious, silken-textured amalgam of ripe quince and honeydew melon tinged with mint and cress and drizzled with fresh lime for a simultaneously soothing and stimulating performance, capped by a finish of remarkable clarity and sheer refreshment for what is in effect a lightly botrytized Auslese. Riper and more seductively textured than the already superb corresponding “no-star” Spätlese, this is, however, less recognizably a product of its site. (It originated in a lower, deeper-soiled section of the Einzellage.) Drink date: 2016-2036. Score: 93 (David Schildknecht, vinous.com, Nov. 2016)

PETER ZEMMER CRIVELLI RISERVA CHARDONNAY 2016DOC Alto Adige

TASTING NOTE: Peter Zemmer makes bold wines that are determined in their territorial identity. The 2016 Alto Adige Chardonnay Riserva Crivelli offers a strong citrus character with lemon curd and grapefruit concentrate. Those are the high notes, but the low notes veer toward toasted almond and pine nut. The wine opens to an off-gold color with spice and natural rubber. Despite the delicate bouquet, the wine fans over the palate to reveal a firm, mid-weight palate. Drink date: 2018-2025. Score: 93 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Aug. 31, 2018)

MICHELE CHIARLO CANNUBI BAROLO 2015DOCG

TASTING NOTE: This exclusive vineyard is known for sandy soils resulting in soft and silky wines, and the 2015 Barolo Cannubi is delicate indeed. (The nearby Cerequio vineyard, by contrast, results in more austere, thick and dense wines.) This Barolo is aged in botte grande for 24 months, producing an expressive and tight wine, slightly shy at first, revealing forest berry, blue lavender and licorice. This warm vintage does offer substance and volume. The Barolo Cannubi was not produced in 2014. Drink date: 2021-2040. Score: 94 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, June 28, 2019)

BARALE FRATELLI SERGIO BARALE BUSSIA RISERVA BAROLO 2013DOCG

TASTING NOTE: Fruit for this elegant wine is sourced from Barale Fratelli’s 35-year-old vines (that are farmed organically) in the Bussia cru. The 2013 Barolo Bussia Sergio Barale shows firm lines and crisp acidity with focused aromas of wild berry, garden herb and moist earth. This is a cool-vintage expression of Nebbiolo that is built to last long. The wine shows the firm tannic structure and power for long cellar aging. Only 2,000 bottles were made. BARALE FRATELLI SERGIO BARALE BUSSIA RISERVA BAROLO 2014DOCG

TASTING NOTE: This is the standout wine among this group of new releases from Barale Fratelli. The 2014 Barolo Bussia Sergio Barale shows a dense and tightly knit texture that is interwoven with notes of dried berry, grilled herb, licorice and cola. The primary fruit intensity is dim and low-key, and this Barolo offers those dry and dusty tannins that I associate with long oak aging in botte. In fact, this wine ages in large oak casks for three years. There is some bitterness on the close that needs to relax with time. Drink date: 2020-2035. TASTING NOTE: As usual, Le Macchiole has done a great job with all of its releases, including the lower-end bottles such as the 2017 Bolgheri Rosso. There is a sure sense of precision and sharpness here with bright berry and black cherry. Those aromas show quality and craftsmanship. TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Messorio is a true tribute to Merlot. It’s not easy to faithfully render the distinctive characteristics of this grape, within such a tight margin of error, but the winemaking team at Le Macchiole has deftly achieved exactly that. With sourcing from the Puntone vineyard, Le Macchiole wanted to achieve less density yet more aromas of skin. The wine has a homogeneous feel, with huge generosity and fullness, and it delivers big, ripe cherry tones with so much luscious fruit and delineated persistence. Drink date: 2021-2040. G. CAMPAGNOLA CATERINA ZARDINI RISERVA AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2013DOC

TASTING NOTE: This wine is made with a traditional Amarone blend that sees Corvina and Corvinone Veronese in starring roles with a smaller part played by Rondinella, and it has a full 100 days of drying in the fruttaio. The 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Caterina Zardini is a full-bodied and powerful Amarone to pair with an aged T-bone steak on the grill. This wine produces heavy layers of dark, dried, jammy fruit with prune, plum and raisins followed by Indian spice, barbecue smoke and a brushing of delicate balsam herb or cola on the mid-palate. The seven grams per liter of residual sugar (with 15.5% alcohol) add to the wine’s distinctively powerful mouthfeel and full-bodied texture. It ages in barrique for 18 months, with the fruit sourced from a 36-hectare property located in Marano di Valpolicella. About 20,000 bottles were made. Drink date: 2019-2027. RAMÓN DO CASAR NOBRE TREIXADURA 2017DO Ribeiro

TASTING NOTE: 100% Treixadura DWWA 2019 marked a breakthrough year for Galicia with two whites in our Best in Show category, but it’s important to note how different the two are. This relatively young Treixadura marks the classic style for this cool, maritime region of steep vineyards and fresh wines. It’s a bright pale gold in colour with rich, vivacious, billowing scents of yellow summer fruits like nectarine and peach; there’s some hillside flowers in the wine, too. On the palate, it is light, clean and enticing but those floral fruits are far from simple and the wine, while fresh, has a mouth-filling tenacity and ample breadth, too. The acidity provides the main structural component but it’s rounded and aromatically rich with the memory of those winning summer fruits. Drink 2019-2022. Platinum - Best in Show. It has a complex nose of nectarine, pithy stone fruit, lanolin and beeswax and seems to constantly evolve in the glass; suggestions of white chocolate and broom emerge with time. The intense grapefruit and mango flavors are counterbalanced by the killer line of acidity. There is power in this FMC, but a sense of elegance triumphs on the precise finish. This comes highly recommended and can be broached either in its youth or with several years in the cellar. Drinking window: 2021-2042. Score: 94 (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Nov. 2019)

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Hermitage Ex Voto Blanc is certainly in the same league as the 2009 and 2010, and it’s going to be interesting to compare these vintages over the coming 2-3+ decades. The 2015 has all the hallmarks of a great vintage with its huge bouquet of quince, toasted almonds, brioche, liquid rocks, and honeysuckle as well as touch of licorice. Sensationally concentrated, opulent, and multi-dimensional on the palate, it has

power that makes it so revered. Limes and lemons, white and yellow peaches, some apples and shaved fennel, fresh chalk and fresh flowers, too. TENUTA DI ARCENO VALADORNA 2012IGT Toscana

TASTING NOTE: The 2012 Valadorna is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Castelnuovo Berardenga comune. This is a dark and impenetrable wine with thick concentration and ripe fruit flavors. The two Cabernet grapes come out on top, and the wine delivers a heavy load of ripe fruit, garden herb and rosemary. This a ripe, bold and super opulent red wine from Tuscany that could pair with savory roasted lamb with mint sauce. Drink date: 2018-2030. Score: 94 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Oct. 31, 2017)

TASTING NOTE: A blend of the best barrels in the cellar, First Drop’s 2015 The Cream Shiraz lives up to its name, easily besting the single-vineyard offerings – at least on this day. It’s 52% Ebenezer, 35% Greenock and 13% Seppeltsfield, offering a sexy array of dark fruit flavors, a touch of raspberry, and a plush but not overbearing coating of cedar and vanilla-tinged oak. TASTING NOTE: Say what you will about the Mollydooker wine style or marketing, there’s no denying that Sarah Marquis is able to build wonderful texture into her wines. The 2017 Carnival of Love Shiraz frames powerful dark fruit aromas with strong cedar overtones, but the highlight is the high-end Mollydooker texture – somewhere between heavy cream, plush

TASTING NOTE: I enjoyed the texture of the 2016 Renacido Vineyard, perhaps a little less elegant but with great character. I looked at my note from the previous year and was very surprised to read that I commented on the texture then as well. I often associate minerality with texture (and/or vice versa), so this has to be an expression of the soil here, an expression of granite. This is elegant and floral in a way that very few Cariñena are. It has subtle minerality and an earthy touch, with a rare combination of elegance and rusticity. Instead, the 2015 makes a strong opening statement with its bold, almost flamboyant fruit. TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Transcendent is deep purple-black colored and features beautiful floral notes of violets and lavender over a core of red and black currants, black cherries and warm plums plus hints of cigar box and menthol. Full-bodied and full-on pedal to the metal in the mouth, the palate is packed with black fruit layers and ripe, velvety tannins, finishing long and

great effect. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, leather, lavender, spice, menthol and cloves are all amped up. The 2017 is a rich, explosive wine built on flamboyance and volume. This large-scaled, potent Cabernet Sauvignon has a ton to offer. which is probably a very good thing for its long-term prospects. Even so, the 2015 is dense, powerful and super-concentrated, with a level of finesse in its tannins that separates it from so many wines in this challenging vintage. Time in the glass brings out graphite, menthol, licorice, sage and spice notes that add a sense of gravitas. I would prefer to cellar the 2015 for at least a few years to allow some of the baby fat to melt away. I expect the 2015 will always remain an exotic, full-throttle wine relative to the norm here.
