If you are looking for real Blues you’ve come to the rightplace. October sees another explosion of Blues in the

fine city of Norwich and elsewhere in Norfolk. Building onfour years of the Fine City Blues Festival the fifth focusesmainly on the best in British Blues today - from long estab-lished artists to exciting upcoming new bands.

Our region in the East of England has long links withthe USA: long links and strong links. Norwich is in a uniqueposition, historically and geographically, to host a specialevent to celebrate that special, if sometimes challenged, rela-tionship. Many strong bonds were forged during the SecondWorld War, when the US Air Force flew from bases across thecounty: bonds that remain strong until this day.

There is evidence that American servicemen broughttheir music to England with them early in the 1940’s - Jazzand Blues. The city now boasts many fine music venues ofmany different kinds, styles and sizes. That’s two good rea-sons why we think Norwich, Norfolk and the East of Englandshould be a centre of excellence for true Blues lovers!

Of course, there are already many great music festivalsin the UK, but we are convinced that our region provides theperfect setting for a real Blues festival where Blues can beenjoyed in smaller, intimate venues where the audience cansee Blues at its best - up close and personal!

As good as they are, most British Blues festivals havebecome Rock festivals or, at best, Rock & Blues festivals.We continue to redress the balance by placing more empha-sis on real Blues presented in nationally recognised concertvenues and truly atmospheric roadhouse settings.

The Fine City Blues Festival will run from18th - 28th October.

This year the festival features many top flight BritishBlues artists plus an exceptional Blues artist from Brazil! TheBlues is alive and well all over the world but nowhere moreso than in our region.Read on to find more details of Blues gigs in our region ...

Big Gilson is one of the forerunners of the blues in Brazil.He honed his chops gigging for many years in Brazil,Argentina, Europe and the USA. He opened for StevieWinwood on his Brazilian tour and, working withJohnny Winter and Johnny Rivers, he played to anaudience of 70,000. He has also opened up in Brazilfor the master B.B. King. Buddy Guy has extended anopen invitation to play at his Legends Club in Chicagoany time. Big Gilson is a recording artist for Top CatRecords (Dallas, Texas) and Mississippi Delta BluesRecords (Brazil).

This year’s Fine City Blues Festival focuses on BritishBlues - from the Great British Blues Boom of the sixtiesto the present day … something old, something new,something British, something Blue!

Opening up the evening’s celebration of British Blues isthe blues veteran Dave Thomas, who was right there inthe sixties and early seventies, when his band onceheadlined above Fleetwood Mac! The Dave ThomasBlues Band continues to deliver the kind of hard-drivingChicago-style blues that was such a big influence onbands like the Rolling Stones, the Pretty Things, theYardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and Led Zeppelin.

The Greg Coulson Band is the hottest young British bluesband on the scene today. They are already makingwaves with their recently issued debut CD. Their aim is tocarry the blues tradition into the future influencing anew, younger blues audience with their own, special,fiery, impassioned brand of rhythm and blues.

Paul Lamb is known by aficionados and music pressaround the world as a foremost Blues harmonicaexponent, forging himself a place in the history booksas one of the greatest players of our time. Countlessawards have been won by him and his band. He hashad the rare experience of meeting and collaboratingwith his musical heroes Sonny Terry and others, including Junior Wells, Buddy Guy and Brownie McGhee.

He has sold record-breaking quantities of albums andperformed around the world. Having been inducted intothe British Blues Awards Hall of Fame (alongside thelikes of Peter Green, John Mayall and Alexis Korner)Paul continues to bring his infectious brand of soulfulBlues to his fans around the globe.
