FINE ARTS 2018-2019
Mission StatementFriends University, a Christian University of Quaker heritage, equips students to honor God and serve others by integrating their intellectual, spiritual and professional lives.
The College of Business, Arts, Sciences and Education offers students a traditional college experience with liberal arts and professional programs that represent a broad range of academic majors.
The Fine Arts Division exists for the creation and study of the arts. We provide students educational and creative experiences that integrate professional artistic standards with the academic inquiry of the liberal arts, Christian tradition and our Quaker heritage. Students and faculty develop their craft and vocation while engaging audiences and serving the community. Dedicated faculty guide instruction in a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum, mentoring students to experience the transforming power of the arts and to excel in their profession.
The Division of Fine Arts fosters a long tradition of excellence. We have had performing arts on our campus since 1900 and visual arts since 1917. This heritage informs our 21st century model of providing outstanding educational and creative experiences through dedicated faculty/mentors, more than 20 guest musicians, choreographers and artists, and 150 concerts, performances, exhibits and events annually.
A commitment to creating out-of-the-classroom learning experiences and inviting guest artists to campus exposes our students and faculty to relevant, artistic creativity and innovation. It also serves as a valuable source of inspiration and a model for successful careers in the arts.

What most excites you about working at Friends?
Why do you think investing in community is important?
At Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), I was chair of the music department for 22 years. In that capacity, I oversaw all the events of the collegiate department and our community music programs. I taught violin and viola lessons and classes pertaining to strings. I also coached string chamber music and conducted the EMU Orchestra.
The long tradition of excellence in the arts at Friends made the university very attractive to me. I have long been interested in how all the arts can interrelate to each and across disciplines. I also am very excited about having ballet a part of the fine arts division because we did not have dance at EMU.
The arts are about self-expression. They enable us to connect with people. By sharing the arts with others in a whole host of ways, we can collectively bring about change in the broader society. Contributing to the life of those around us enriches us all.
Welcome to the 2018-19 fine arts season at Friends University! The Fine Arts Division has a full calendar of exciting events planned. Our talented and hardworking students, coached and mentored by our outstanding faculty, are looking forward to sharing their gifts with you throughout the year. We promise another season of first-class productions, exhibits, concerts and shows. You will leave inspired!
The arts serve us in a myriad of ways, filling our souls with comfort and joy, and lifting our spirits. In his book Divine Beauty: The Invisible Embrace, Irish poet and philosopher John O’Donohue wrote,
Celebrating and sharing beauty is the hallmark of the arts at Friends.
Attending arts performances and shows in person adds a dimension to our lives not experienced in any other capacity. Friends’ students, faculty and staff are thrilled to have you join us for these events. You play an important role in our performances by providing laughter, applause, reaction and interaction with our young artists. Your partnership completes the learning experience for our students. The Singing Quakers will travel to Italy and Austria on their June 2019 international tour!
The comprehensive vocal program at Friends University includes four
choral ensembles, music theatre, opera productions, vocal jazz and choral-orchestral masterworks. Friends University choirs are frequently invited to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association annual convention and to collaborate with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.
Each year, selected high school choirs are invited to the Sing It! Vocal Festival to join forces with Friends University choirs to study and perform under the baton of internationally-renowned specialists in choral music. The choral and vocal faculty regularly offer out-of-the-classroom learning experiences through national and international touring, opera study abroad, performing

at professional music education conferences, and service-learning. Ensembles have performed across the United States and Canada, as well as Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Costa Rica. The Singing Quakers, the oldest musical organization at Friends University, have also been featured on national television and have performed at the White House, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Instrumental music is a vibrant part of the division. Students from across campus, regardless of major, have
an opportunity to learn and perform in a variety of wind or string ensembles. The Concert Band collaborates regularly with guest artists and composers to perform some of the greatest new and standard literature from the wind band repertoire.
The Sinfonietta Orchestra, previously known as the Chamber Orchestra, primarily performs string literature and collaborates regularly with guest soloists. Friends University Community Orchestra includes students, faculty and community members and performs standard full orchestra compositions.
Chamber ensembles include the Percussion Ensemble, Flute Choir, Clarinet Quartet, Brass Quintet, Tuba Ensemble, Woodwind Quintet and String Ensemble. Instrumental ensembles regularly perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association annual convention.

Theatre productions offer a variety of opportunities
to perform, collaborate, create and produce stage plays, musical theatre, improvisation and original scripts. At Friends, this means students can participate in performance or production leading to a theatre minor, which partners well with a
number of majors and academic paths. Students come to learn creative ways to solve their educational, vocational and artistic problems using critical thinking skills based upon solid work experience in theatrical performance and production. T he jazz department is unique in the opportunities it
provides for playing and studying jazz in a small university setting. Students participate in a variety of jazz ensembles, including two big bands, a jazz vocal ensemble and four jazz combos. Also offered are a jazz concentration performance degree, improvisation classes and private jazz lessons on
all instruments. Each spring Friends University hosts a two-day festival featuring nationally known jazz artists. Out-of-the-classroom learning experiences include working with nationally recognized guest artists, performing in venues throughout Wichita and international touring and travel (Havana Cuba Jazz Festival in 2012 and Europe in 2008 and 2010 ).

A major in the visual arts at Friends University allows students the
opportunity to study studio art (drawing, painting, print making, sculpture, ceramics or
photography) and graphic arts. Skilled faculty teach creativity and design as a foundation of the curriculum with an expectation that all students will create a professional portfolio
as a result of their study and work. Students experience hands-on work in the studio or computer lab along with opportunities for out-of-the-classroom learning.

excellence in preparation for a professional career in the world of ballet with opportunities for additional studies in teaching, administration and therapy. Our goal is to offer a ballet education that creates talented performing artists so they may achieve their future goals and become confident leaders in their profession. Final projects are designed to propel students into creative, successful careers. A nurturing and supportive environment, combined with professional ballet training, enables dancers to reach their full potential physically as their passion for arts education increases.
Friends University’s ballet department involves a number of guest artists, teachers and choreographers each year. Our repertoire includes ballets by George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, Dominic Walsh, Shawn Stevens and many others. We are committed to introducing our dancers to current artists in the world of dance at large.

Refunds & Exchanges We cannot give refunds or exchanges for purchased tickets.
Season TicketsSeason tickets are available for Singing Quakers or a “Pick 4” package. Each subscription will include one ticket to each performance in the package at a 10 percent discount. The Singing Quakers package will include all three Singing Quakers performances for the season. The “Pick 4” package will include any four performances of your choice during the season. Season tickets can be ordered in the same way as individual tickets. Orders are processed in the order they are received and the best available seats will be given to each customer. Guests wishing to sit together must order together.
Performance Times and GuidelinesWe strive to start all of our performances on time as a courtesy for the artists and patrons. Seating after the start of any performance is at the discretion of the house manager, according to the wishes of the artists and director.
Please inquire when purchasing tickets if a performance is suitable for children. All children must have a ticket and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
