EVERETT RUESS TIMELINE
March 28, 1914: Born in Oakland, California.
1923:First trip, with his mother, Stella, to Grand Canyon and
Yosemite.
1925: First Everett Ruess writings that have survived, including
All Boy, Age 11, Secret Diary.
1928: Family moves from Indiana to Los Angeles, California.
June to September 1930: First long solo journey, up California
coast to Carmel, Big Sur, and then inland to Yosemite.
January 1931: Graduates from Hollywood High School.
February to December 1931: First journey through the Southwest,
a marathon ten-month excursion, most of it solo,
ranging from Canyon de Chelly to the Grand Canyon to Zion
National Park.
February 1931: Buys first burro, which he names Everett, as he
adopts the pseudonym Lan Rameau (later changed
to Everet Rulan). Later renames the burro Pegasus.
April 1931:Adopts a rez dog that he names Curly. Curly will be
his constant companion throughout the next year.
March to September 1932: Second solo expedition across the
Southwest, during which he visits Mesa Verde
National Park. Much of this expedition is marred by depression
and misfortune.
September 1932 to February 1933:Attends UCLA, only attempt at
college, before dropping out.
June to October 1933: Second long excursion in California, from
Sequoia National Forest and Park through High
Sierra Nevada to Yosemite.
October 1933 to March 1934: Lives in San Francisco, trying on a
bohemian lifestyle, as he attempts to sell his
paintings and blockprints. Meets Dorothea Lange, who poses him
for a memorable
series of photographic portraits.
December 1933:Brief relationship in San Francisco with the
mysterious Frances, probably the only love of his life.
April to November 1934: Third and final expedition into the
Southwest, ranging from northeast Arizona to
southwest Utah.

November 11, 1934: Writes last letter, to his parents, from
Escalante, Utah.
November 19 to 21, 1934: Shares camp with two sheepherders far
out on the
Hole-in-the-Rock Trail. They are the last people to see him
alive.
March to June 1935: Series of searches launched by ranchers in
southern Utah discovers his burros
and last camp in Davis Gulch, as well as two enigmatic NEMO
inscriptions.
1935 to 2007: Parents and brother begin lifelong quests to
discover what happened to Everett Ruess.
1940: Publication of On Desert Trails with Everett Ruess.
1942: Wallace Stegner salutes ER in a long chapter in Mormon
Country.
1983:Publication of W. L. Rushos Everett Ruess: A Vagabond for
Beauty, which cements the gathering cult around
the lost wanderer.
1996: Jon Krakauer celebrates Everett Ruess in a chapter in Into
the Wild.
May 2008: Denny Bellson discovers a grave site on Comb Ridge
that matches the story of his Navajo grandfather
about seeing a young white man with two pack animals killed by
Utes.
June 2008- to September 2009: David Roberts, author of Finding
Everett Ruess, gets involved in Bellsons dis-
covery, and sets in motion the excavation of the body and its
testing by DNA and
facial reconstruction techniques. First results conclude
unequivocally that the
body on Comb Ridge is that of Everett Ruess.
September 2009: Positive DNA finding is overturned by further
analysis at AFDIL.
July 2011: Finding Everett Ruessthe first comprehensive
biography of Everett Ruessis published.
