Library Collection

Abstract:

The Library Collection of the Robert C. Byrd Congressional Papers is comprised of the personal library collection held by the late

Senator Robert C. Byrd in his offices and residence. They include works of numerous genres and a large collection of photocopied

works used by Senator Byrd in his personal research.

Scope and Content:

The Library Collection of the Robert C. Byrd Congressional Papers comprises 84.5 linear feet of records including shelved

books and 47 boxes of rare, first edition, and signed books. Most texts contain marginalia. Many were given to Senator Byrd

from the author or from friends. Several books date back to Senator Byrd’s early education at Mark Twain High School and

Marshall University.

Notable signatures in books include;

Presidents, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy E. Carter, and George H. W. Bush.

First Ladies Jacqueline Kennedy, Lady Byrd Johnson, and Hillary Rodham Clinton

Other Notable; Senators Edward Kennedy and Robert Dole, Congressman Peter Rodino, Chief Justices Warren E.

Burger, and William H. Rehnquest, President of France Valerie Giescard d’Estaing, and Portia Washington-Pittman,

daughter of Booker T. Washington.

Subseries:

The Research Binders subseries contains 45 boxes of photocopied books, transcribed from original texts and containing

annotations from Senator Byrd. These binders were used in the Senator’s readings and research, most notably for the 1993

Senate Floor Speeches on the Roman Senate.
