The ProgrammeThis programme of study is designed for teachers interested in extending their knowledge of language and language teaching, but who are not able to give up work to study. It is a three-year, part-time course which leads to a UK Masters degree from St Mary’s University. The design of the programme is unique, combining elements of distance learning with residential study weekends in Berlin.

Programme contentStudents following the MA programme complete six modules over two years, taught in six long-weekend sessions (Friday-Monday) in Berlin, at the Berlin School of English, near Checkpoint Charlie.

The final module, in research methods, is taught at St Mary’s University itself in West London, also over a long-weekend. The dissertation is completed over the following academic year, with support given through email, sometimes telephone, and occasionally by tutorials arranged to correspond with our trips to Berlin (or student stops in London).

The six modules will always include:

º Linguistic Theory

º First and Second Language Acquisition

º The Description of English

º Sociolinguistics

Further modules will include two of the following:

º ELT Syllabus Design and Methodology

º Management and Teacher Development in ELT

º Teaching English to Young Learners

º Sylabus Design and Methodology

All modules are assessed by a 4-5,000 word assignment. To be awarded the Masters degree, a student must have successfully completed the assignments for six modules, and a dissertation.

For each assignment there is always a range of titles to choose from, and it is normally possible to adapt these (following consultation with your tutor) to fit in with your own professional interests.

TeachingThe intensive weekends from Friday afternoon until Monday lunchtime may sound more grueling than they are. A lot of ground is covered, but the pace is not relentless. The Berlin School of English seminar rooms are comfortable, we have frequent breaks, the style of teaching is varied, and there is more time for discussion than sometimes allowed when the teaching is fitted into two-hour slots. Our Berlin courses have always been intellectually stimulating as well as enjoyable occasions.

Entry requirementsYou should have an undergraduate degree with at least 2.2 honours degree, plus three years professional experience in education. We are able to consider applications from people without a degree if they have appropriate professional qualifications and experience.

We will also consider applications from graduates without the full three years’ professional experience if their first degree is in a subject related to applied linguistics.

We usually interview students whose first language is not English. This gives us a good idea of your oral skills. We also ask your referees to give their opinion of your ability to study at this level.

In many cases we ask applicants to attain a certain standard in an English language test (for example, a score of 6.5 or above for the IELTS). We take into account whether you have studied through the medium of English before, either at school or university.

At the beginning of the course all students write a diagnostic essay assessment so that we can offer help to those we think need to know more about the conventions of academic style. However, for your own sake, you should not undertake this course if you feel you are not able to read and write academic English confidently.

You might find it helpful to attend a pre-sessional course before embarking on the course.
