It is now more than a yea r since a homecoming- crowd assembled at Iowa City. And the time has brought man y majorchanges in th e athletic set-up at the university. A new director of the division of physical education, a new head football coach, assistants - al l named within

All-Staters Become Iowa FreshmenA Great Squad of Smart Ex-Prep Stars Awaits

1938 Hawkeye Football SeasonBy ROBERT HOGANSports Editor) Iowa City Press-Citizen

If All-State high ~ c h o o l football players repeat in college their feats performed inprep school, then the newUniversity of Iowa coachingstaff can si t back and takethings easy for the next fewyears. But, sadly, things justdo no t happen that way. However, Coach Ir l Tubbsand his corps of assistants arehere to coach an d a look atthe freshman squad rosterwill show you that there areplenty of all-staters - andgood ones at that - withwhom the coachin'g staff canwork. Not the least important isthe fact that this year's cropof top-flight freshman g-ridders are, on the whole, amore selected group, bothfrom the scholastic and individual ability angle, thanhave been other freshmanprospects that entered Iowain recent years.Glenn Devine, assistant tothe athletic director, andaide-de-camp to Coach Tubbsin this business of greetingincoming frosh grid prospects, declares the coacheswill no t have to worry aboutscholastic deficiencies. Atleast their high school records will be above the average scholastically. For instance Mike Enich ,the big all-state 225-poundhalfback from Boone who isattending classes here, compiled a "B " average fo r fouryears of high school work. Then there 's Bruno Andruska, an all-city and all-Catholic high school linemanfrom Chicago, Ill., who attained an average of 90 during- his high school career.Ed Beisser, the first team all-

state center, who prepped inDes Moines, will attempt tokeep up his "B" average hereat Iowa, along with Ken Petti t of Logan, first all-statehalf-back. Howard Wake-

field, another of Chicago'Shighly touted all-star backs, rated an 80 average for foliryears of high school. Not an all-stater perhaps, but probably the valedictorian of the class is LawrenceEly, a football player fromGuthrie Center who hasearned a 96 average in fouryears of high school work.Tn addition, Ely played football and basketball for fouryears, played in th e band forfour years, and took part inschool plays and oratoricalwork during his prep days.No t so bad!Jack McKinnon, the brilliant all-state quarterbackfrom Perry, matriculated atIowa and voices the thoughtsof other members of thesquad when he declared:

COACH BERNIE BIERMANvVhen they write of Bernie Bierman, the

famous Minnesota player who became agreat coach, often they compare him withthe immortal Knute Rockne of Notre Dame.

There are striking parallels. As collegeathletes, they captained their teams at Minnewta and Notre Dame. Each university hadimpressi ve records.

And as coaches, they handle their me nalike in discipline, in leadership, in thoroughness of teaching. Rockne's teams compiledtwo victory strings of 20 games each, Bierman's first string of 21 was broken last fall.

Coach Bierman has been at Minnesotasince 1932 an d his teams have won 36, lost5, an d tied 4. Three mythical national titlesan d two Big Ten championships are in therecords. No Iowa team has yet defeated a Minne

sota eleven coached by Bierman. Best of thefive games was that of 1935, when Minnesotawon in a last quarter drive- an almost perfectly-played game before some 53,000persons.

    CAPTAIN HOMER HARRISOF IOWA

Alert as a panther, withlong arms swinging and legstensed ready to charge, Ho mer Harris for two seasonswas a familiar figure on th eright flank of Iowa's football teams. You may not notice himso much this afternoon forhe's at left tackle. But he'sdoing a nice job in a positionwhich was more or lessstrange to him at the timeof th e shift. That shift was necessarywhen Henry Luebcke washurt. I t still doesn't preventthe Iowa captain from beingone of the first downfieldunder punts. He likes todown the ball inside th e 5-yard line.

Harris wa s named Iowa'smost valuable player of 1936.Next Saturday he plays hisfinal home game. But in th ewinter and spring he will putth e shot an d run the hurdles, for he is also a two-letterma n in track.

    A Quarter CenturyOf Homecomings

This homecoming business, to whichIowans look forward each fall, began Nov.23, 1912 - 25 years ago. By beating Iowa,28-10, 'l\Tisconsin won the conference title.Iowa State three times an d Nebraska oncewere homecoming rivals, but only once since1920 have the Hawkeyes played a non-conference foe, Penn State in 1930.It's 12 wins for Iowa, 10 for opponents,an d 3 ties as Iowa an d Minnesota this afternoon meet for the elventh time at Hawkeyehomecoming. On page 3 are sketches of those ten previous games with the Gophers. Inveterate

homecomers like to recall some of the otheJgames, principally contests with Illinois.

Remembe r these? 14-2 over Illinois by thetitle team of 1921, the famous 12-10 winover Grange an d Co. by Kutsch and Iowansin 1925, the 7-7 stadium dedication deadlockin the rain, 19-0 over Penn State in the onlyintersectional homecoming game; 26-7 overWisconsin in 1933.

    "Waddy" CoachesIowa Freshmen

Energetic J. Elwood Davis, the peppery"Waddy" of drop-kick fame who captainedthe Hawkeyes in 1917, is head freshman football coach now. Twenty years out of intercollegiate competition have not dimmed hisenthusiasm for the game.

    Old Gold(1)

Oh, Iowa, calm an d secure on thy hill,Looking down on the waters below,With a dignity born of the dominant willOf the men who have lived long ago.Oh, heir of the glory of pioneer days, .Let thy spirit be proud as of old,For thou shalt have honor, an d blessing, andpraise .

In the daughters and sons of Old Gold.

(2)!We shall sing av p be glad with the days as they

fly, \ \In the time that we spend in thy halls,And in sadness we'll part when the days havegone by,

And our paths tutn away from thy walls.Till the waters no more in thy river shall run,Till the stars in the heavens grow cold,We shall sing of the glory an d fame thou hastwon,And the love that we bear for Old Gold.
