• Generally fall into three categories: Need, Merit, or a combination of both. Other factors may be included such as first generation, region, language, economic hardships, athletic ability, musical talent, just to name a few.
• Merit scholarships are usually based on standardized test scores, rank in class, grade point average, essays, letters of recommendation.
• Need-based scholarships rely on financial aid obtained from the FAFSA.

Subsidized Stafford Loan: Interest is paid by Department of Education while you are in school Maximum for freshman year = $3500
Unsubsidized Stafford Loan: Interest begins to accrue when the loan is taken out, so students must decide to make interest payments or allow interest to roll into principle balance Maximum Sub/Unsub combined per year = $5500
Parent PLUS Loan: Parent credit worthiness is assessed; repayment begins 60 days after the second disbursement
Alternative Loan: Credit worthiness; Variable credit

• UTSA’s Top Scholar Program is the first of its kind in San Antonio to offer a merit-based scholarship combined with personalized experiences in academics, leadership, and community service.
• The scholarship covers the entire Cost of Attendance.
• The competition for slots in the program is very competitive, with only a few students selected.
Top Scholars Program

• Eligibility Requirements:
– 1400 or higher on the two part SAT (critical reading and math)
– 2100 or higher on the three part SAT
– 32 or higher on the ACT
– Class rank in the top five percent of their graduating class
– Record of community volunteerism and leadership in school
– Texas residency

Top Scholars Program

• Will be awarded to recognize students’ academic credentials (i.e., standardized test scores and/or high school class rank). Scholarships are valued up to $24,000 over 4 years.
• Automatic consideration will be given to Fall 2017 students fully admitted to UTSA by December 1, 2016 and who meet the class rank and score requirements stated below based on fund availability.

$6,000 $3,000 3.75 (4.0 Scale) 12 hours by the end of each semester and a cumulative 3.0 GPA
• Automatic consideration for students fully admitted to UTSA by: – Fall (February 15)
– Spring (October 15)
• Transfer 24-66 semester credits of academic coursework from a community college or university – Dual credit from high school and work in progress is not included
