Dr. Davis began his close-up and personal relationship with UAPB at the age of four when his father, Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Sr., began his tenure at the AM&N College (now UAPB) as a teacher, later serving as president and chancellor. His early education – nursery school through college (except for the year spent at Merrill High School from which he graduated) – was obtained on the campus of AM&N College. Graduating from AM&N with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, he went on to earn a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He also attended Iowa State University of Science and Technology at Ames, where he earned a doctorate in engineering mechanics, an area of mathematics not to be confused with mechanical engineering. His additional studies include a year at Brown University at Providence, Rhode Island, studying physics; a summer at the University of Oklahoma at Norman, studying computer science; two summers at Oak Ridge (Tennessee) Associate Universities, studying nuclear reactors and acid rains, and post graduate studies at Harvard University.

Dr. Davis’ professional career began with a brief stint at Mississippi Vocational College, now Mississippi Valley State University at Itta Bena, before returning to AM&N as an instructor of mathematics. Davis swiftly moved through the ranks to assistant professor, associate professor, full professor, chairman of the Department of Mathematics and Physics, dean

of Arts and Sciences, and dean of Liberal and Fine Arts before becoming Chancellor at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.Through the unanimous choice of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Davis was appointed chancellor in November of 1991 and immediately embarked on moving the university aggressively to address the challenge of funding new ways to better serve the university’s clientele and to serve a more heterogeneous student body. His first year was filling his cabinet and other key positions including three vice-chancellors, a chief of security, and athletic director. The football program was restored after a two year ban and a new coaching staff was immediately hired. Within two years, the football program was at an all-time high, playing

for the national championship of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Division I.

With his key personnel in place, Dr. Davis labored to address as many of the historical concerns as possible, while giving impetus to enhancing the teaching, research and service functions that

Other signature projects and events credited to Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Jr., include:

the university had performed well for more than 100 years. He oversaw the completion of a multi-million dollar building to house the School of Business and Management. Soon with the support of Diane Gilleland, the director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, and Governor Jim Guy Tucker, the university received a $30 million appropriation from the state to upgrade the campus facilities. As a result of the largest state appropriation in the history of the university, Dr. Davis was successful in attaining his initial goals for enhancing the service functions of the university.

Dr. Davis has been active within the community, state, and on a national level.

He has worked with Leadership Pine Bluff; the United Way; the Presidents Board of Advisors on Historically

Black Colleges and Universities; the Industrial Foundation; Partners for a Better Pine Bluff; the Merrill High School Restoration Alliance; the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas. He is an active member and deacon of Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church.

He is the recipient of many accolades and awards as the result of his professional and volunteer work. He has received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from each of his alma maters.

Throughout his tenure as dean of Arts and Science and as Chancellor of the University, Davis was a staunch supporter of the arts in the community as well as the university. Although becoming

chancellor of UAPB was not his primary goal early in life, he once said, “I am happy to be sitting in the leadership role because I understand the importance of this university and its great heritage.”

Today, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff stands as the Flagship of the Arkansas Delta, due in part to the efforts of Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Jr. When Dr. Davis took control of the wheel as captain of the ship, he knew that there would be rough waters ahead and days

of uncertainty due to the college’s $2.9 million deficit that existed at the time. In record time, Dr. Davis had managed to turn the ship around, stabilize the schools finances, and raise the morale of the faculty, staff, and students.

Dr. Davis is dedicated to his family. He is married to the former Ethel Grant. They are the proud parents of two children; Sonya Davis Cole, and Lawrence A. Davis III. They have nine grandchildren

and one great grandchild. One daughter, Catherine Davis Harvey is deceased.

Continuing the signature projects and events credited to Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Jr., include:

• Constructed the 1890 Cooperative Extension Complex

• Inaugurated a new football stadium made possible through a town and gown effort

• Participated in two national football championships• Activated golf for men and women, softball,

Dear Alumni and Friends:

It is a magnificent view from where I sit—a sea of alumni and friends who give wholehearted support to our students. Thank you!

As interim chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), I am proud to stand on the shoulders of giants who have moved this institution from its infancy as Branch Normal to the current doctoral granting university. I am appreciative of individuals like you, some of whom give without being asked because you know a financial void exists. And I am excited about the diverse body of students we educate who will surely be among the nation’s leading professionals.

With shrinking public subsidies, coupled with historic rises in tuition cost and increasing demands for financial aid by our students, we understand the challenges that lay before us. Individuals like you, who have stayed the course and remained steadfast in your support, help us to face the uncertainty optimistic of a positive outcome. Without you, the future would present even greater challenges.

Again, I thank you and I extend to you the deepest gratitude for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Calvin Johnson, Ph.D.Interim Chancellor

Dear Alumni and Friends,

You are such valuable assets to our students!

You have stayed the course through “the best of times” and through “the worst of times.” In intervals of seemingly prosperity, you did not hold back in your generosity. During periods of negative publicity, you remained steadfast in your support. We thank you for being mindful of the most precious asset at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB)—the students we educate. Our students are among the individuals who will face the challenges of tomorrow equipped to make a positive impact. Hopefully, they will follow in your footsteps and mirror the commitment and dedication that you have exhibited to your alma mater.

Your presence during homecoming and other key events is an excellent time to take stock of the many good things that are occurring at UAPB. Visit classroom, labs, the library, the student union and various administrative offices. Drive throughout the campus and see how the university is keeping pace with accreditation standards and gearing up for even greater academic momentum. You are the reason that we remain a progressive institution of higher learning.

We are grateful for the many, many ways you help our students!

Sincerely,

Dear Alumni, Friends and Supporters:

Among the many things I look forward to each year at Homecoming activities, is seeing hun-dreds of individuals like you who strongly and continuously make a significant and positive impact on students attending the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB)!

Whether you have given year after year for decades, or have been giving only a few years, or even if you are a first time donor, you are part of the tremendous success story that happens day after day, year after year, and decades upon decades at the great institution now known as the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. From humble beginnings, to the state-of-the-arts progressive institution UAPB is today, there have been at the forefront individuals who give generously and tirelessly of their resources so that others may have the opportunity to obtain a college degree. Your generosity over the years to this day is not taken for granted.

During the challenging times that we have faced this past year, I want to extend a sincere and special “Thank You” for understanding the priority and the needs of our students.

Sincerely,

ANNUAL GIVING DRIVEAnnual contributions for the period July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012, totaled $914,768.02.

Our donors designated their gifts consistent with their interests and chose a variety of ways to give support. Many donors gave unrestricted gifts so that unanticipated student needs could be met. As a result, the Annual Giving Drive consisted of several successful initiatives. Though all specific initiatives that gave a positive impetus to our fundraising efforts are too numerous to mention here, special note is made of a few that have a far-reaching and long term impact:

lifeline endowed fund

The Lifeline Endowed Fund was established to provide students in dire need of financial assistance the opportunity to attend college at UAPB. Funds raised will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the U.S. Department of Education, Of-fice of Postsecondary Education/HBCU (Title III) Initiatives. As of June 30, 2012, the Lifeline Endowed Fund had reached nearly $311,000.00

dorothy magett fiddmont new millennium leaders The Fiddmont Leaders initiative remains a strong impetus for scholarship support of our students.

All donations to the fund from October 1, 2007 – September 30, 2012, will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education/HBCU (Title III) Initiatives. (Please note that, donors do not qualify for higher giving level because of the match made by the Title III funds and their employers’ matching gifts.)

As of June 30, 2012, the fund (with matching gift pending) had grown to nearly $1,090,000.00.

“The minimal aid we receive to attend school is never enough to purchase books. In the past, I’ve struggled through semesters without books opting to study with other students in order to complete my assignments on time. While that experience can be quite humbling, I am sure you understand what a relief your donation is to me. I appreciate your donation because the security knowing I can attend classes fully equipped to learn keeps my dream alive. Thank you very much for your generosity.”

-shalea

“Without this scholarship, I would not have been able to purchase books due to a family current financial hardship.”“Many people believe that most freshman, especially from West Memphis and the surrounding areas, only attend college to pledge a Greek letter organization or to receive a refund check. I am the exception to that kind of thinking. Having witnessed firsthand the hardships my family has endured; I am determined to break the cycle.” -chloe

“This scholarship is especially meaningful to me for personal reasons. My mother never had the opportunity to attend a four year institution. As a result, securing stable employment has always been a struggle for her. I am determined to break the cycle by obtaining as much education as I can. Your generosity makes this possible.” -phylicia

“I am especially thankful for your generosity because I will be the first college graduate in my immediate family. As a Pine Bluff native, I am eager to give back to my community upon graduation. My goal is to establish a Non-profit organization aimed at improving the economic and social well-being of the city’s “working” homeless population by providing safe living conditions, education and financial literacy.” -john

“I am the first in my family to attend college and thanks to your generosity I am more equipped to succeed this semester.Growing up in a less privileged community has not only created financial and academic challenges, it has also made me realize the value of a college education.” -takeesha

“I am a non-traditional student returning to finish my degree after 15 years. This semester, I am a junior majoring in Biology. Upon graduation from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, I hope to be accepted into University of Arkansas Medical Sciences /Medical College. My ultimate goal is to become an obstetrician/gynecologist.I cannot begin to tell you how much your scholarship has helped me as I pursue my educational and career goals. “I would like to thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness in regards to this award.I am pleased with the education I have received at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, as well as the invaluable learning experiences this institution has made available to me that have expanded and strengthened my education. Upon graduation from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, I hope to carry this knowledge to another institution as I will be serving as an instructor and working towards receiving my masters and doctoral degree in International Relations.” -datrez

“I am very grateful that you have afforded me the opportunity to receive a book scholarship this semester. The cost of schooling has increased as I have matriculated through the years at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. This adds to the already stressful process of registering for classes and purchasing books at the beginning of each semester. Yet, I am proud to report that the funding you granted me last year helped me greatly. For the first time in my life, I attained a 4.0 grade point average!” -dexter

“Thank you for providing a student scholarship to complete my senior year at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. I am pleased to report that I have passed all of the Praxis exams required to complete my degree, however, the testing costs put me in a financial bind as this final semester drew near. Your generosity will make it possible for me to graduate this December with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health/Physical Education!” -dederick

“This scholarship award will help me with my education expenses so that I may focus more on my studies and less on my expenses. For this bless-ing, I am very thankful. After graduation, I plan to attend law school. While in law school, I plan to work hard to discover all that I may obtain about the law field so that I can be a competent attorney. I believe that a career as an attorney will give me a unique opportunity to provide for my community by helping others.” -kearie

“Thank you for providing an opportunity for me to receive a scholarship to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. My mother was a twenty year survivor of breast cancer before it ultimately took her life. This experience forced me to grow up quickly. To this day, I draw on my mother’s heroic example when it comes to facing challenges. Recently, my father passed away after a brief struggle with multiple myeloma cancer. His positive spirit throughout his illness has motivated me to strive to be successful at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and leave no door of opportunity unanswered when it comes to achieving my goals. I hope to honor their memory and your generosity by doing my very best.” -whitney

The George “Doc” Jones Forensic Association (debate team) had amazing results during the 2011-2012 debate season. The team returned from the International Public Debate As-sociation’s National tournament with TEN national awards. UAPB was proud to have Travis Adams from Blytheville, AR win the first place trophy for being the best speaker in the na-tion. It was a moment of pure joy to watch him pick up the beautiful engraved silver tray in Huntsville, TX. Christopher Cooper, also from Blytheville, brought additional honor to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff by being named the ninth place speaker. Travis and Christopher also were one of the top sixteen pairs in the team division. Joseph Robinson from Little Rock, AR and Cecilia Nuby from Lawrence, KS earned the fifth place team award for the season. Among the other awards picked up were; the second place online tournament award, the season long fifth place varsity speaker, and the twelfth place Scholastic Award. The entire team was jubilant when they were awarded the tenth place sweepstakes award. The sweepstakes award is given to the teams with the greatest number of wins as a team. Triumphing over so many other prestigious universities, the UAPB team deserves to be celebrated. This national tournament was the culmina-tion of a season of awards. There is no longer any room in the trophy case for all of the trophies.

The fall season began with 33 wins at Henderson State that resulted in five awards. At the University of Arkansas at Monticello, the team had 31 wins, placed first in team de-bate, and brought home five more awards. In Jackson, TN, the home of Union University, the team won an octofinalist award. The Southern Forensic Championship resulted in 31

wins and seven awards. In the spring, the debate team began with Henderson State and enjoyed 20 team wins and four awards. East Texas Bap-tist from Marshall, TX and Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX worked together to provide two tournaments in one weekend. The team was able to get double experience and double points toward the national ranking in one week-end. The 29 wins and seven trophies which included two speaker awards found the team coming home with another wrecking crew award. At this point, a national ranking was in reach. The wrecking crew award is for the highest percentage of wins from a team collectively. As UAPB only took three people, it was a high honor. This was the first time that the UAPB team had won this prestigious honor and elation was felt all around.

In Springdale, AR, the team was the grateful guests of the Har-ber High School collegiate debate tournament. The crowd went wild when the first place speaker was from UAPB. The drive to Northwest Arkansas was certainly worth it with 23 team wins and four more awards for the trophy case. Louisiana State University in Alexandria found the UAPB team winning another wrecking crew award, again with only three debaters. Three trophies and 16 team wins left the Louisiana crew knowing that the UAPB debaters had been to town. The final tournament before nationals was at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Bringing home a mere 20 wins and only two trophies motivated the team to work as hard as possible leading up to the national tournament. The hard work paid off as you read earlier.

The freshmen from four years ago when the team was first brought back to campus graduated this past May. They are going on to even greater successes than those they earned on the debate team. Three of the students are now in law school, one is a manager at Sears saving for law school, and one is a counselor for abused children. The team now has twenty seven members and grows daily. Greater success and even higher honors are in the future for George “Doc” Jones beloved debate team.It was with the support of our alumni and friends that the debate team was provided the opportunity to bring such prestigious awards and high honors for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

The Vesper Choir had an outstanding year of service both on- and off-campus. In addition to our annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah”, the Vesper Choir performed an evening of opera favorites from operas such as: Carmen, The Magic Flute, Aida, and Lohengrin with the Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestra in March. Our Choir students were featured as soloists. The Vesper Choir had several notable performances including a performance at the State Capitol in the Rotunda and on the steps of the Capitol Building to commemorate the accomplishments of Governor Winthrop Rockefeller and Mr. Sonny Walker in their efforts to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King when he was assas-sinated. The Choir also performed in Camden, Dermott, W. Memphis, N. Little Rock, Little Rock, Southaven, MS, and in Memphis.

The visibility and artistic reputation of the Vesper Choir continued to increase on the national level with two of our students participating in the “105VOH” (Voices of History), the national HBCU choir event that was held at the Ken-nedy Center in Washington, D.C in September of 2011. Those two students also participated in a follow-up event that took place in Nashville at the Grand Ole Opry in Janu-ary. In September of this year, we had two students, Steven Howard and Phyllissa Dunk, to appear at the “105VOH” event which took place in Washington, D.C. at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium. Phyllissa was also the regional winner in the vocal competition.

The spring 2012 Vesper Choir tour was a resounding suc-cess and our students were excellent representatives of the university. The Vesper Choir traveled to Kansas City, KS and MO, to Las Vegas and to Los Angeles. The alumni in each

of the cities provided lodging, many meals and opportunities for entertainment. The arrangements for our Kansas City stay were organized by Ms. Tanya Townsend, alumni chapter president, with the assistance of members of the local alumni chapter. While there, we sang at Second Baptist for the “Touch of Grace Ministries Int’l” (our concert was broad-cast “live” over the “web”), at Zion Travelers MBC and at Friendship Baptist Church. In Las Vegas, our hosts were Dr. Harvey Williams and the Las Vegas Chapter. The arrange-ments they made for us were great. We were housed at the Circus-Circus Hotel and were treated to a reception held in our honor by the Fordyce Club of Las Vegas. The Choir sang at Cheyenne High School and at The Great Commission Interdenominational Church in Las Vegas. The Choir then traveled to Los Angeles where Robert and Janice Whitfield and the Southern California Alumni Chapter provided our lodging, several meals, a visit to cultural attractions and per-formances at two high schools (Compton High and Domin-guez High School) and at three churches: Bethel A.M.E., Bryant Temple A.M.E. and Grand A.M.E. The enthusiasm of our alumni and the audiences was great!

Special events for the present academic year include a perfor-mance in November at the Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, MS for a celebration of HBCU choirs, and with the Arkansas Choral Society in their performance of Handel’s “Messiah” to be held at the First Pentecostal Church in North Little Rock on November 29. We are looking forward to participating in February, 2013, in the mega-choral event celebrating the “Spiritual”. The concert will be held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and will involve choirs from at least 30 colleges and universities.

Alumni please know that we greatly appreciate all that you do for the Vesper Choir. You are a source of pride to us and we want you to know that your prayers, support and interest in us are sources of inspiration.

The University Museum and Cultural Center, established in the spring of 2005, is self-supporting and depends solely on grants and contributions of donors.

The Museum, is home to the “Keepers of the Spirit: The L.A. Davis, Sr. Historical Collection” which documents the more than 130 year history of UAPB.

In celebration of the university’s 139th Founders’ Day obser-vance, the University Museum and Cultural Center recently unveiled historical markers that have been placed around the university’s campus and throughout the city of Pine Bluff.

In addition to the Keepers of the Spirit exhibit, the museum also features a large collection of photographs, catalogs, yearbooks, letters, artifacts, portraits and other ephemera that document the lives of the people who helped to shape the history of the university and the Delta. The story of this institution is told through a series of large scale photo-graphic panels with text, memorabilia and other artifacts. The museum also offers innovative educational programs and changing exhibits on the mezzanine level designed to increase awareness of the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans.

28 Annual Donors Report

PRIORITY GIVINGAll donors are important to the advancement of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). Donors who give to one of the three top priority areas (Unrestricted, Lifeline Scholarship and General Scholarships) add greater strength to their gift. Of the priority areas noted, unrestricted dollars give the university the greatest flexibility to address important areas of need – those that directly impact the students we educate.

On the following pages are the names of individuals who have supported the plea for donations to the areas of unrestricted, Lifeline Endowed Fund, and general scholarships.

Gifts were received between July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

CORPORATE AND FOUNDATION MATCHING GIFT PROGRAM

The University continues to be grateful for the support of its corporate partners. The companies and corporate foundations listed on this page are those that have provided contributions to the University and its Foundation through their match-ing gift program. The University urges its alumni and friends to investigate the matching gift program that may be offered through their companies. Some companies offer programs, which will match one-for-one, two-for-one, or three-for-one. The program may even extend to the employee’s spouse.

This is an excellent way to multiply gift dollars and have a greater impact on academic programs. To take advantage of a com-pany’s matching gift policy an employee may obtain a form from their company’s corporate giving office and send it in along with their gift.
