Problem Background

• Explain about the problem of your proposed systems

• Example

• Hospital Information Systems– Explain how the hospital handle the current

systems to register patients.– What is the process involve– Any weaknesses etc

Chapter 1

• Problem Statements

• What is the Focus of a Problem Statement?– Some Need or Needs must be addressed.

– Some Problem must be tackled.

Building the Problem Statement

• Sketch the problem that you feel exists.- Who else says it’s a problem?- Any statistics/commentary that highlight the

problem?- What other efforts have been made to work on the

problem?- Create a general question you would like your study

(when finished) to answer.

What is a problem statements?

• A problem statement is a clear concise description of the issues that need to be addressed by a problem solving team and should be presented to them (or created by them) before they try to solve the problem.

• When bringing together a team to achieve a particular purpose efficiently provide them with a problem statement.

6

A good problem statement should answer these questions:

• What is the problem? This should explain why the team is needed.

• Who has the problem or who is the client/customer? This should explain who needs the solution and who will decide the problem has been solved.

• What form can the resolution be? What is the scope and limitations (in time, money, resources, technologies) that can be used to solve the problem?

7

Primary Purpose of Problem Statements

• The primary purpose of a problem statement is to focus the attention of the problem solving .

• However, if the focus of the problem is too narrow or the scope of the solution too limited the creativity and innovation of the solution can be stifling.

8

The need of evidence

• When drafting a Problem Statement, authors should show some degree of evidence that what they claimed is true.

• Eg. The current Hospital Inventory Systems is bad.

9

Project Constraints

• The primary impact of project constraints is the likelihood of delaying the completion of the project.

• There are three types of project constraints:

1. technological,

2. resource and

3. physical.

Project Stakeholders

• Project stakeholders are those entities within or without an organization which:

• a) Sponsor a project or,• b) Have an interest or a gain upon a successful

completion of a project.• Examples of project stakeholders include the customer,

the user group, the project manager, the development team, the testers, etc.

• Stakeholders are anyone who has an interest in the project. Project stakeholders are individuals and organizations that are actively involved in the project, or whose interests may be affected as a result of project execution or project completion.

The following are examples of project stakeholders:

• Project leader • Project team members • Upper management • Project customer • Resource Managers • Line Managers • Product user group • Project testers
