TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

Poland was awarded the right to host the Men’s EHF EURO 2016 at the EHF Congress in June 2012 in Monaco. Croatia, Norway and Poland had bid for the event, and after the presentation of all bids, the majority voted in favour of Poland (27 votes), followed by Croatia (15 votes) and Norway (4 votes).

Only a few months later the first teams already embarked on the road to Poland, as the first phase of the qualification for the first time was played on a home and away basis instead of in qualification tournaments.

Finland, Greece and Estonia became the three group winners who in April 2014 faced Bosnia-Herzegovina, Romania and Switzerland in another new qualification phase, the intermediate play-offs. The latter three had been the three lowest ranked teams in the EHF EURO 2014 Qualification. However, two of them – Bosnia-Herzegovina and Romania – avoided a further relegation, while Finland recorded a surprise victory against Romania and made it to the final qualification stage.

This second phase started in October 2014 and after 84 qualifiers had been played by the middle of June 2015, the field of teams for the EHF EURO 2016 was completed. Croatia and Norway from Group 1, Denmark and Belarus from Group 2, Sweden and Slovenia from Group 3, Iceland, Serbia and Montenegro (as best third ranked team) from Group 4, Hungary and Russia from Group 5, France and FYR Macedonia from Group 6 as well as Spain and Germany from Group 7 joined hosts Poland at the final tournament.

The Men’s EHF EURO 2016 will be played from 15 to 31 January 2016. Poland is the 12th nation in EHF EURO history since 1994 that hosts the 12th final tournament. The preliminary round will be played in Krakow (Group A), Katowice (Group B), Wroclaw (Group C) and Gdansk (Group D). The main round will be played in Krakow (Group I) and Wroclaw (Group II); the final weekend will take place in Krakow. Besides these four cities, Malopolska, the region surrounding Krakow, is also the official hosting region for the tournament.

This is first time that a Men’s EHF EURO event has been extended to 17 days overall. The extension is due to change in the playing system for the main round. Instead of three there will be four playing days with two teams always resting on Days 1, 2 and 3 – it is only on the fourth playing day that all six teams take to the court.

The arenas selected for this tournament are the newly-built Tauron Arena in Krakow with a capacity of 15,000 spectators, the Ergo Arena in Gdansk (11,000), the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Centennial Hall in Wroclaw (6,500) and the Spodek Arena in Katowice (10,000).

Ahead of the draw Poland made of use of their right as organisers and already placed one team in each group, which means that the hosts will start in Krakow (Group A), Germany will play in Wroclaw (Group C), Denmark in Gdansk (Group D) and Croatia in Katowice (Group B).

FRANCE

When France won gold at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, it seemed this success might be the last for the nation’s golden handball generation as long-term key players such as Didier Dinart and Guillaume Gille retired and the team played a disappointing World Championship 2013. However, the glory days for French handball are far from over. At the EHF EURO 2014 they remained unbeaten and won their third European title in style

when they demolished hosts Denmark 41:32 in the final. And it did not stop there – a year later France topped another podium, this time at the World Championship. The team is led by the outstanding current World Handball Player Nikola Karabatic, but new players such as Valentin Porte, Luka Karabatic and Alix Nyokas have shown they have all the potential it takes to become world-class athletes.

DENMARK

The 2016 qualification marked the international debut for Danish head coach Gudmundur Gudmundsson, who replaced Ulrik Wilbek in the summer of 2014. Gudmundsson had big shoes to fill: Wilbek led the Danish men’s national team to two EHF EURO titles (2008 and 2012), silver at the World Championships in 2011 and 2013, and silver on a home court at the EHF EURO 2014.

Although experienced players such as Thomas Mogensen and Michael Knudsen left the team prior to the start of the campaign, Denmark had no trouble qualifying as winners of Group B. With stars such as goalkeeper Niklas Landin and former World Handball Player Mikkel Hansen in the squad, Denmark are arguably one of the favourites to medal at the EHF EURO 2016.

SPAIN

After winning the World Championship 2013, Valero Rivera took the top job for Qatar and was succeeded by fellow Spaniard, Manolo Cadenas. The handover of team responsibilities from one coach to another went smoothly, though Spain failed to repeat their 2013 success at Qatar 2015, where they finished fourth. The squad remained almost the same and Cadenas can still count on tall defence, strong goalkeepers including

Arpad Sterbik, brilliant wings like Victor Tomas and classy high-scorers such as Joan Canellas. Canellas was the top scorer at the EHF EURO 2014, where Spain won bronze. Besides Sterbik, who plays for HC Vardar, Canellas (THW Kiel) and line player Julen Aguinagalde (KS Vive Tauron Kielce), the core of the team is formed by players from FC Barcelona, such as Tomas, Viran Morros, Raul Entrerrios and Gonzalo Perez de Vargas.

CROATIA

Following a string of bronze medals won at the EHF EURO 2012, the 2012 Olympic Games and the World Championship 2013, Croatia’s form has dropped recently with a fourth place finish at the EHF EURO 2014 and sixth place at the World Championship 2015. Failing to qualify for the semi-final at Qatar 2015 cost head coach Slavko Goluza his job at the helm. After the World Championship Goluza

was replaced by Zeljko Babic, who successfully steered Croatia through the qualification and has been given the task of forming a medal-contending team by 2018 – when Croatia host the EHF EURO – at the latest. The current squad is a mix of young and old, with experienced players like Domagoj Duvnjak, Ivan Cupic and Manuel Strlek alongside promising talents such as Stipe Mandalinic and Filip Ivic.

ICELAND

Since they reached their first EHF EURO semi-final in 2002, Iceland have been among the top handball nations, with silver at the 2008 Olympic Games and bronze at the EHF EURO 2010. Iceland only narrowly missed the semi-finals at the EHF EURO 2014, and after a weak start to the 2016 qualification, pulled themselves together to eventually finish top of Group 4.

Coach Aron Kristjansson has a highly-experienced squad at his disposal, which still includes some Beijing silver medallists such as Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson, Robert Gunnarsson and goalkeeper Björgvin Gustavsson. At almost every tournament an Icelandic player is named part of the all-star team, as was the case for Aron Palmarsson at the 2012 Olympic Games.

POLAND

As hosts, Poland did not have to go through the hardship of qualification however, a bronze medal at the World Championship 2015 in Qatar is clear proof of the team’s strength. Poland enjoyed one of their most successful periods between 2007 and 2009, when they came second and third at the respective World Championships. Following a dip in form and performances, German Michael Biegler took over the head coach position from

Bogdan Wenta in October 2012.With World Championship All-Star line player Bartosz Jurecki, three players from 2015 VELUX EHF FINAL4 bronze medal winner KS Vive Tauron Kielce: goalkeeper Slawomir Szmal, Karol Bielecki and Michal Jurecki, and the home crowd support they can rely on at the EHF EURO, Poland will be a force to reckon with in January.

SWEDEN

Sweden are the record EHF EURO champions with four titles, but they have not qualified for the semi-final since hosting the tournament in 2002, when they topped the podium for the last time to date. The past few years have been up and down for coaches Ola Lindgren and Staffan Olsson: Only weeks after missing the qualification for the World Championship 2013 Sweden reached the Olympic Games Final in London, which they lost to

France. At the EHF EURO 2014 they reached the main round, and at Qatar 2015 they finished tenth. The squad’s style combines typical Scandinavian tactics such as strong defence with fast wings and intelligent backcourt shooters – a combination that proved successful as Sweden went through the qualification undefeated. Players to watch in the future include 23-year-old Jim Gottfridsson.

HUNGARY

What can go wrong if you have one of history’s best handball players coaching you? The Hungarian Handball Federation surprised many when they presented Talant Dujshebaev as the new head coach in October 2014. And to answer the question: Not much, as Hungary were one of the first teams to qualify for the EHF EURO 2016. Expectations are still high however, and Dujshebaev has announced participation at the

2016 Olympic Games as the future goal. The unquestionable star is Laszlo Nagy, who played a key role in Hungary’s most recent success when they reached the semi-final at the 2012 Olympic Games. However, medals have eluded the team since 1986, when they won silver at the World Championship. Besides Nagy, the heart of the team is its defence with world-class Roland Mikler in goal.

RUSSIA

The recent past saw a reasonably successful era for Russia under the reign of head coaches Oleg Kuleshov and Alexander Rymanov. At the World Championship 2013 they reached the quarter-final then finished ninth at the EHF EURO 2014 – their best position since 2006. However, when Russia finished 19th at the World Championship 2015, Kuleshov and Rymanov’s time was over and former Olympic, world and European champions Dmitri

Torgovanov and Lev Voronin took over. With them at the helm Russia finished second in Group 5 in the 2016 qualification. And while he admits it being a tough task, Torgovanov will do everything in his power to steer Russia to the Olympic qualification by ranking well at the EHF EURO 2016. The team’s stars include Timur Dibirov and Sergei Gorbok, who both play for HC Vardar.

FYR MACEDONIA

FYR Macedonia’s men’s national team is still all about Kiril Lazarov. The top scorer at the World Championship 2009 and EHF EURO 2012 is the unquestionable heart of the squad. When Lazarov scores, FYR Macedonia are on the upswing; if he fails, they are going down. Fortunately for the Macedonians Lazarov was once more at his best throughout the qualification. His 56 goals not only made him the top scorer of the stage but also

accounted for more than one third of his team’s goals in the qualification, which they finished ranked second in Group 6. It is a handball-mad nation and the atmosphere at games is always electrifying. Besides Lazarov, the Macedonians’ hopes for the EHF EURO rest on the shoulders of player such as Naumce Mojsovski and Dejan Manaskov.

GERMANY

There have been numerous setbacks for the 2007 world champions over the past two years: First they failed to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games, then for the EHF EURO 2014 in Denmark, and finally they lost to Poland in the World Championship 2015 Play-offs. Courtesy of an IHF wild card, they nevertheless made it to Qatar through the ‘back door’. Following a seventh-place finish at the World Championship things have

been moving in a more positive direction under new head coach Dagur Sigurdsson. During his first season in the job he was simultaneously in charge of Füchse Berlin, leading them to victory in the EHF Cup, but the Icelander will focus solely on the German national team from now on. It is the expressed goal of Germany to be back on top by 2019 at the latest, when they co-host the World Championship together with Denmark.

BELARUS

Handball has a long and successful history and tradition in Belarus, dating back to the Soviet Union era when many players from Minsk were part of the national team. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Belarusian men’s national team made history when they were part of the first match at an EHF EURO event on 3 June 1994 in Porto. They faced Germany and recorded a sensational 24:23 victory. However, it was 14

long years until Belarus participated in an EHF EURO again, in 2008. These days the undeniable star of the team is Siarhei Rutenka. Under his on-court guidance and with coach Iouri Chevtsov on the sideline, Belarus qualified for the World Championships 2013 and 2015 as well as the EHF EURO 2014 – and, of course, for the 2016 event, courtesy of finishing second in Group 2.

SERBIA

Serbia have changed coaches four times since winning silver on the home court at the EHF EURO 2012: When the team missed the quarter-finals at the World Championship 2013 Veselin Vukovic was sacked and intermediately replaced by SG Flensburg-Handewitt coach Ljubomir Vranjes. Vranjes was succeeded by Vlatan Matic, who took over for the EHF EURO 2014 but failed to reach the main round.

When an eight-goal advantage was not enough to beat Czech Republic in the World Championship 2015 Play-offs, Matic resigned immediately. Hence it was up to former world-class goalkeeper Dejan Peric to steer the team through the EHF EURO 2016 Qualification Phase. With the prowess of stars such as Marko Vujin and Momir Ilic, Serbia succeeded, placing second in Group 4 to qualify for the final tournament.

NORWAY

For many years the Norwegian men’s team played in the shadow of the successful women’s national team, before the EHF EURO 2008 acted like a starting signal for the team’s improvement. The youth programme showed results with talents like Kent Tönnesen and Sander Sagosen making their mark. Even now that experienced key players like Havard Tvedten and Börge Lund have retired, Norway remain a force to reckon

with. After failing to reach the main round at the EHF EURO 2014, head coach Robert Hedin quit his job and was succeeded by Christian Berge. He was planned as an interim solution, but despite the fact that Norway also did not qualify for the World Championship 2015, Berge kept his job and successfully steered Norway through the EHF EURO 2016 Qualification. The Scandinavians even recorded an unexpected victory against Croatia.

SLOVENIA

The EHF EURO 2004 hosts have been on a rollercoaster ride in recent years: In 2013 they reached the World Championship Semi-final in Spain, but only a few months later a defeat against Belarus saw them miss out on the EHF EURO 2014. In the World Championship 2015 qualification the team overcame Hungary to qualify for the final tournament in Qatar, where they finished eighth and Dragan Gajic was the

tournament top scorer. However, this success did not save head coach Boris Denic, who was replaced by legendary Veselin Vujovic ahead of the final two rounds of the EHF EURO 2016 Qualification Phase. Slovenia have a number of talented youngsters to draw from in the coming years. Gasper Marguc, Borut Mackovsek and Jure Dolenec are just three young guns on whose shoulders Slovenia’s future hopes rest.

MONTENEGRO

Women’s handball has been in the spotlight in Montenegro for many years. Buducnost won the EHF Champions League in 2012 and 2015, while the national team won the Olympic silver medal and EHF EURO gold medal in 2012. But it was also in 2012 that the men’s team first sprang a major surprise, eliminating Sweden in the play-offs for the World Championship 2013, then beating

Germany twice to qualify for the EHF EURO 2014 in Denmark. When Montenegro lost to Belarus in the World Championship 2015 Play-offs, coach Zoran Kastratovic quit his job and was succeeded by Ljubomir Obradovic, who guided the team to their second consecutive EHF EURO. Montenegro’s top star is PSG Handball wing Fehrudin Mehic.
