INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: ARTICULATION

Page 2: final submission

To introduce us to the 1st semester of third year, we were given a task to do a video of our choice with the means of showing who we are plus what is our independent practice.

Thinking about exploring the practice of film and editing I rushed to the chance for a project like this. One of my new practices being film, which I started briefly last term in year 2 and hope to carry on in the third year. I wanted to show that side of me and combined it with my surrounding of where I came from.

Wishing to push my knowledge of final cut pro and getting a clearer understanding of filming on location, hoping to push my skills. Plus help me be more confident and take on more film projects in the future.

INTRODUCTION

Page 3: final submission

Taking a cannon HD camera up to Epsom downs I wanted to catch the sun going down hoping to develop a time-lapse affect. To capture right monument of light to dark I ex-perimented for 2-3 days up on the downs to get the right timing and view so that I could film the perfect shot on day 3. Between 6pm to 7.30 was the right amount of time to make a 3 min time-lapse piece to show in my presenta-tion. After filming I had to editing the speed to boost the time from an hour and half to 3min on final cut pro.

Bringing two things together one being film and the other London, from the downs you can get a prefect outline view of London. Looking back at the video I think it ticked all the boxes for what I was asked to do and personally I was pleased with the outcome.

DOGME 95 (VIDEO PROJECT)After viewing and getting feedback from my tutors, we were given an extension to the first one. Following a set of rules that a group of DOGME 95 filmmakers followed for their pro-ductions of films.

The point of this was to see if we can follow them and not break one of to 10 rules on the other page. With the idea of me wanting to continue the whole home and background theme I did for the last video, I planed to take a trip to Camden and film my day whiles following the rules. My day consisted of the streets of Camden, passing pubs and the markets stalls which Camden I know for.

Page 5: final submission

The goal of the Dogme collective is to purify filmmaking by refusing expensive and spec-tacular special effects, post-production modifications and other technical gimmicks. The filmmakers concentrate on the story and the actors’ performances. They believe this approach may better engage the audience, as they are not alienated or distracted by over-production. To this end, Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg produced ten rules to which any Dogme film must conform. These rules, referred to as the “Vow of Chastity,” are as

follows:[1]

Filming must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in. If a particu-lar prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found.

The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. Music must not be used unless it occurs within the scene being filmed, i.e., diegetic.

The camera must be a hand-held camera. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted. The film must not take place where the camera is standing; filming must take place where the action takes place.

The film must be in colour. Special lighting is not acceptable (if there is too little light for exposure the scene must be cut or a single lamp be attached to the camera).

Optical work and filters are forbidden.

The film must not contain superficial action (murders, weapons, etc. must not occur.)

Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden (that is to say that the film takes place here and now).

Genre movies are not acceptable.

The film format must be Academy 35 mm.

The director must not be credited.

Notes on how I approached the filming for the Dogme 95 challenge. I brainstormed locations and shots, plus how I can work around the rules set by Luke and Mike.

DOGME 95 (final video)During this task I found not using a tripod to be one of the hardest parts because I wanted to capture the stillness in my footage but I choose to go with the look of someone walking around Camden instead of the planned documentary look I wanted. Secondly I found when ed-iting the piece that sound wasn’t something was mixing together and decided on using a soundtrack over the footage to make viewing of more entertaining, then random sounds and uneven levels of traffic being made.

Before uploading it to the blog I wrote a small evaluation on the film describing that I felt like it was rushed and that the idea had potential to be something good. Getting feedback from Luke that agreed on what I mentions in my notes, he referred me a video and gave me some pointers on what to do next.

DOGME 95 (feed back)After showing the Dogme videos we were put into small groups to ex-plain what we wanted to do next to continue are independent prac-tice. I found presenting and explain your work in small groups was much better and useful to my practice. Getting feedback from your tutor is useful but also critical comments or advice from others who share an interest in graphic design is better too cause then you might have not seen something in your work that you haven’t seen before. I felt that my meeting went really with feedback from eve-rything, helping with ideas and what I could develop for my own per-sonal work.

During the meeting the brought up the link that Luke sent me in his response for the first video. It was videos made by a group of mix media users called the light sergeant. The video was called “City of Hallow Mountains” a piece about two areas in America, but the thing I was amazed by was the shots and how simple it was filmed. Show-ing key parts of the city with a males voice being played over and talking about his experience. I really opened my mind to how I could shoot my own project, plus the use of a narrator over the video made me think I could use that too.

Page 9: final submission

Clips and the link for the video that helped with what I wanted to next with my independent practice. I found most of the light ser-geants other project helpful in my search of what cameras I should use and how they could be used to.

Dropping down notes in my meeting. Plus brainstorming on locations in Camden, this was for me to just go out and get the filming done in a order. So when It comes to editing it would not take too long.

CITY OF HOLLOW MOUNTAINS

whats next on the list...?

Page 10: final submission

Before filming in Camden I wanted to develop the idea of the brain-storm and story broad I did for the plan. I got a camera and took stills of Camden during the day to get a feel of the locations. This would help would help with what angles suit best the shot or how I would like them to follow in the film. To collect a range of images and footage I had to spend a few weekends at home to catch the huge numbers of people that visit Camden on the weekend. I did a total of 4 and half weekends filming, trying to grab enough footage and also work on the mistakes I found whiles doing this project. This also pushed my skills and knowledge of the cameras I used.

My next step was to take as much as I can and experiment with the footage in different ways, slowly building up to final piece of mix media.

CAMDEN VIDEO (DEVELOPING BRAINSTORM)

Page 11: final submission

One Saturday I got the train from Epsom to Camden town in north Lon-don, to take stills with a cannon D60. When arriving at the station I started straight away starting with the high street and working my way slowly through the market. Follow the plan that I drew up in my note book this made my trip a lot easier and quicker. Finishing of the locations I wanted to do some pick up shots on peoples reaction when interacting with the market and the food. Together this will show Camden’s mix culture and impact it has on tourists.

Below are some of the stills I got during my time in Camden. These really helped me in the build up of filming and making the transi-tions of the clips run smoothly when editing,

CAMDEN VIDEO (1st “time-lapse”) Behind the video

My first attempt at filming in Camden was to collect differ-ent shots of the town, from the streets to well know popu-lar sites. The aim was to get as much footage to make a time lapse. I started by going to each point on my map that I wrote down in my book. Ticking off while I was going I found that there was a not enough movement to make a time lapse. Going out the market to the high street I found that a crowd of peo-ple of people moving along making this the perfect angle for my 1st draft of the video.

Standing there for about 5-7 minutes without stopping to grab enough action, this was to experiment with final cut and how I can decrease and increase time with just a click of a button. Hoping to add this time lapse to a final piece with different footage to make short montage of what home is really all about for me.

Page 15: final submission

Images show what is was like to be Camden, showing the missive crowds that travel to Camden on the week-ends. This was all done the Canon legria HD camera, I choose to experi-ment with this one first to see how it records and see if the quality was good enough to continue using this camera. I found it really easy to use and the camera had an all round good quality to film with.

Page 16: final submission

CAMDEN VIDEO (2nd “night time”)

Page 18: final submission

Using the same camera the Cannon legria HD, one weekend in Camden I decided to see what the footage would look when filmed in the dark. Would the atmosphere be completely dif-ferent from day? Would the lack of light cause the camera to function in an unusual way? These were some the question that went through my mind at the time. My plan was to work my way up from the lock up to through the markets and end at the streets; starting with the lock I found the market lights re-fection on the water amazing on camera. The way it shined and made the water glow was something I wanted to use in my view on Camden.

For this experiment I used a feature on final cut pro know as cross fade, meaning at the end of each clip it fades in from one into another clip. So it stars of as one and then mixes into two then finally going into a new clip. I wanted to give off a documentary shine to the video. Example of me working in final cut pro is shown below.

CAMDEN VIDEO (2nd “Night time”) Behind the video

Final Cut Pro (Editing)

Another mention on the use of light was when I walked under the bridge the blue lights underneath made an interesting look on the water again. Filming the lights directly made the re-cording look very misty and quite unique in its own way. Above is screen shot of the lights I spoke about.

CAMDEN VIDEO (3rd “camden”) Behind the video (development)

To keep on track and make something of a mix media quality, I booked a Cannon D60 for the weekend and filmed Camden. Before going I drew a storyboard of what I wanted this time plus a small shot list of things I want to pick up on. Example would people having a talk or trying the food out in the market or either people seating down on the lock. I wanted to mix it up in the final result and show all aspects of the Camden town.

Heading out on a cold Saturday Morning I found myself sur-rounded by a crowd mixed with locals, market workers and tourist that have travel to Camden to get a taste of the well know market. I started off with the market and collected footage ranging from the people talking to the stalls owners trying to buy what they’re selling to closes up of the food on sale. Hoping to have enough clips to edit a small piece on the market. Carrying on with my day I moved to the lock and got people enough the river and taking in the nice winter view Camden had to offer, during the lock I was really happy with how much video I got from people drinking hot drinks to and people walking about with the background making the shot look amazing.

Muji booklet that had all my ideas and shot lists that wrote down during this process

Page 23: final submission

Following a story board I did to make my day run smoother, letting me know where I have to be and also making sure I’ve done everything I planed out to do. Also not limiting to a point where I have no freedom or choice on the day, so this was really handy to have.

Still image of Camden on the day I finished my day by filming the pubs and tube station of the town and headed back hoping I had enough to work with, plus thinking about merging the film with an audio track of my choice.

Page 24: final submission

CAMDEN VIDEO (3rd “camden”) (Final View)

During the process of editing I always wanted to put a track over the footage so I didn’t know where to start. I try lis-tening to different songs on YouTube to my own collection, just to find something that I thought could relate of run smoothly with the image. The main goal for the music was not to be to heavy and overpower the imagery so it had to soft but still have a punch. After hours of listen and trying to find the right sound I came across a song wrote by “band of horses, the funeral” and the thing that attracted it to me was the all round sound of a light opening to a mild heavy drums falling in to give my footage a great push. Making sure it fits well I edited the beginning and played it along the rough footage and the overall look was really good and something I would happily continue with.

Overlook at some of the music I looked at

Page 25: final submission

Looking back from where I started with a rush video of Camden to now a much better grasp of everything. To how to use the camera and on editing, I believe that my ability and knowl-edge has improved a bit. This would be something that I could continue with and extend the theme of “home” and many projects that I have thought off.

Looking back and comparing both cameras’ I felt the D60 was better to handle plus the film quality looked a lot better then the other. Watching back on D60 made me think on how I could edit that and what could go with that on spot. With the legria I found it was a lot different to what I watch on the min screen and that I should done something to improve on it. Overall I think both cameras have their strong point and weak points.

H&B(ANIMAL HEADS) “Starting Point”Having the freedom to design whatever you like and have it view by the public audience was a great opportunity to have. Homemade and bound gave us a shot to make our own stamp in the design world and either sale to a live audience or get critical feedback. I thought about experimenting with type, lino, screen-printing, just to find a starting point for this event. As it was mainly independent work and having no re-strictions I decided to work along side someone and Collabo-rating with Nick Mitchell and coming up with an idea to de-sign small A6 cards/Christmas cards that had animal heads on human bodies. We kept the animals to a limit of 5 and stuck with a theme of Christmas/forest creatures, which are:

• Fox• Rabbit• Badger• Owl• Stag

Looking at different styles of drawing to help us with the positioning and look of each animal, making sure that each card kept in the same style of one another. Mainly drawing out the outline of the animal and then added any texture or shade bit by bit to when it transfers to screen it would be clear to print and have no errors. When processing. Using a light box to show me clear view of the finished sketch so I can move on to the next stage of transferring from paper to screen.

Page 27: final submission

H&B(ANIMAL HEADS) “Starting Point”

First draft drawings of the animals that when fine lined and finished would be scan on to a computer, where they would be quickly edited for printing on to acid Tate.

Example of the rabbit

Page 28: final submission

H&B(ANIMAL HEADS) “ready to screen print”

Fox in a suit

Page 29: final submission

Having all five images done and ready we transferred them on to acid tape when a strong UV light embed it. Burning the im-age onto a screen so that we can print on to the A6 cards. During this process we had a bit of trouble with the sizing and quality of the outline of the original image. Firstly the scanner need not pick up the full black ink outlines of each drawing so we had to import them into illustration and live trace them. Doing the same process for each card and making sure the sizing was exact size an A6 should be so when print-ing.

After transferring the image on to the A3 screen we then printed, for card we chose 4 colors to see what suited best. The process went smoothly and the outcomes were a success and I was really happy with them.

Final looks at the fully edit version of the animals

Page 30: final submission

H&B(ANIMAL HEADS) “final look”

After many attempts of screen-printing and get that per-fect print, we finally got our finished prints of each ani-mal. Each has been done in black or to different color paper. We handed them to get any response we could firstly start-ing with the university and most people said they were a good idea for a Christmas cards, the size and look was prefect. Also a mention was the fox and stag being most people’s fa-vorite design, whenever this was brought up we spoke about pushing the two of them further as a t-shirt. For each top there would be two colors involved one being the top ands the other being the outline. Chosen colors being:

• GreyandBurgundy• NavyandWhite

Both being a popular and something that we both want to do next. Our next site was the public and just handing them out to see what buzz or reaction we could get them. The main thing they wanted to know was what we were doing and being thankful for the free cards. To sum up the whole homemade and bound experienced I really enjoyed doing something that I don’t get the chance to do every day. Screen printing and il-lustration is an area I don’t pay much time in and this was great chance to jump in and experiment with martial I rarely use, plus having my work out there and having publicly viewed was great just to see any reaction and take feedback to help me improve my craft and how I design.

info graph: looking back at the pastLooking and back my video project and wondering if I choose to push another practice of mine further with more develop-ment. Looking back at old work mainly through out my sec-ond year I found the digital/ information graphic work I did on football, about my team arsenal. Last year I enjoyed do-ing this cause it was something close to me and wanted to bring two interests of mine together. So I decided to reo-pen this project but instead of only collecting information on one club I looked at the world of football. Choosing the top leagues and following the critical data that most people want to know about football. My main aim was to sum up all my findings and put them into a booklet of set them as simple posters.

We can still win the league, but we won't. A bigger bunch of bottlers you'll struggle to find. You'd never know we were playing to win the title judging by today's performance. Insipid, stale, lacklustre and quite frankly pathetic! But did we really expect anything else? Really?Look at United, even at 2-0 down they kept going and plugging away. They didn't freeze or panic, that was the stuff of real champions. Then look at us, bereft of ideas and far too nervy. The 2 teams reflect the manager. One is still great and one is finished and stale. Such a shame!

WHO IN WORLD FOOTBALL CAN WE GET BETTER THAT WOULD WALK IN?....NONE

Are you going to top yourself when he does eventually leave/resign/get the boot? The Arsenal is what matters - not one person (player or manager)

Of course people were having a pop before the season started based on the fact we all see the carcrash waiting to happen. And guess what it's happened again. Some of you can stick your fingers in your ears and sing one Arsene Wenger....but more and more aren't falling for it. Don't assume we're all JCL's either as we're all fed up of seeing the same mistakes made whilst we pay huge ticket prices. As for winning the league this season, don't make me laugh. We'll do well to finish 3rd as the team are in freefall at present. I reckon the anger will only get worse especially if we lose another game at home.

In other words, he his meeting his key performance indicators every year. He is prepared to take a calculated risk on our final position in the league and cups. Regardless of how each season ends and what the expectations of punters or fans are at the start of the next season he will not be fired any time soon in my opinion as he is meeting the Club's targets. He is being well remunerated (which seems to bother some of you) for meeting these and countless other targets year after year. He is fulfilling what appears to me to be 3 roles. If he were to go, as some of you want, then we will need to change the roles and responsibilities at the club, IMO, to secure his legacy and some sort of continuity. In spite of everything we are second in the league. Perhaps Wenger's gamble will not pay off yet again. We are still close though. It would be great if we could all throw caution to the wind, embarrassment and anger out the window, and get behind the team for a last gasp attempt to reach our dream.

Are you going to top yourself when he does eventually leave/resign/get the boot? The Arsenal is what matters - not one person (player or manager)

so you believe no one could replace wenger, so than means supporters have to accept the pony they have to endure at the moment,

i finally accept we CANNOT win the league this season

We are in good shape but the club needs shaking up or we'll be in danger of falling behind.I know people say we'll drop out of the top 4 every season but City will be spending big, as will Chelsea, United surely won't be so below par, Liverpool will be resurgent too. We'll have a massive battle on our hands to keep pace thats for sure.

My last project was mainly looking at arsenal chat, forum and blog sites to see what true arsenal fan were saying, this was my main source of gathering information. Hearing things that really people fans talk about and not being edited by the me-dia. I found this really insightful and gave me a clear un-derstanding why people blog this way. I really enjoyed doing the design part plus the research too, so I think this would be a good choice to reopen.

Page 34: final submission

info graph: starting pointTo start of my new project I needed to brainstorm what key information will go into my graphics. So I did a quick take down on what words come to mind when think about football. Most popular words would be Goals, Yellow card, Red card, Offside and scorer. The next step was to see what other data was recorded at a match so that I had enough to show. Be-fore collecting the information I needed to come up with a concept/ structure for my designs so the next step was to do tiny thumbnail designs, noting down in each area of what key info will be placed there. I also wanted to come up with a unique way of showing the percentage and goal scoring time in my info graphics.

Page 35: final submission

info graph: developmentHow I thought and developed my ideas in my booklet. Showing how I processed my ideas and pushed them until I felt they were right. Looking at different books about layouts and shape formation so that I could experiment with a dif-ferent range of ideas and noting down or doodling an idea. All over this page are images from my notebook that u use to gather my resources from drawing out the ideas of a pie chart to show the percentage and time meter to indi-vidual designs that I will push in il-lustrator making an idea come to life. Collection the information from watch-ing games and or going to the differ-ent sports websites to count up each category of information, I noted each of them down and use that as the foun-dation of my design. Building up from figures to what you see as a finished piece. Below is the first Idea of show-ing the attendance numbers for one Sat-urday of primer league football. Each in order of highest to lowest, to most football fans you can sport what team is what to the color of the total but to help people out I’ve written the name beside it.

Page 38: final submission

First information graphic with all the information you would need on the day.

Collection the key information that is

• Goal• Attemptontarget• Attemptofftarget• Corners• Offside• Yellowcards• Redcards

This were seven key features in each graphic piece, looking at sky sports or BBC sports webpage and collecting the rights and calculating it up to what you see on the right. I want-ed to make the numbers as bold as I can so that when reading they would just pop off the page and the reader would in-stantly know the facts. With the typography I wanted to make it more interesting with a font that was strong but still had sharp and smooth unique effect to it. So I search on the web-site “Da Font” to find a typeface called devil breeze. This design type for this info graphic has a mixture everything from type: being the information to photos: being the player picture of who was the top goal scorer of that day to color: red and yellow for how many cars were showing on that day.

Page 39: final submission

Page 40: final submission

For this set of information I wanted to display the information in a differ-ent way from the last. Starting of with a pie chart representing the 90 min-utes played in a football match, tak-ing all team and give them a color that stands for them in the chart. The point of the color is for separation on the chart, for each time someone scores that color will appear in the position of the time of goal. This will happen for every team until the full 90 min-utes. I did this and results ended with the chart you see on this page, after having the pie char finished I moved on to individual information cards with all the match facts of what went on in that game, plus for the style I wanted to keep with what I don’t with the goal chart and continue on with it in the new designs.

Page 43: final submission

The information for my second design was from a day of champion ship foot-ball where I watched nine games and collected the original facts and add-ed the possession which I did in a pie chart form with both teams having there own chart to show the number of ball possession they hold, plus another chart like the main one of the other page that shows the goals scored by all the teams playing on that day. The difference for the charts on the game pages was that it only had the goals for that game. I kept the design simple with sticking all the information in team’s colors except the line-ups.

4 games as an arsenal fan is mainly a piece that followers my younger brother who loves watching football and if he gets the chance he would go to as many matches as he can. Looking over my previous work I could I was taking information that was already in way set up for me so I decided to ask my brother if I could do a chart on his behavior at a game or who was his man of the match?? These were a few things I asked him. The main two features in these info graphics are the behavior chart and the match songs/quotes. The chart rates him out of 1 to 10 through the game until over. Going up when his emotions are high or going down then low. The most times he felt high was when a goal went in, I think this chart is value to most people see the game through the eyes of someone else. I really enjoyed doing this part and talking to my brother about the experience he felt at the matches, a part me felt like was there.

The main aim for constructing the layout was to make as simple to understand for anyone, separating each topic in it own box and keeping a restriction on color. Using the goal charts and possession charts again plus making the fact clear so that the public wont struggle to read it.

EVALUATION Looking back at my independent work I can see that I have divided my-self into two practices, one being film and the other being graphics. One practice I have had more of a history with which is graphics side, but my new practice film was something I started last year but never really got into so I thought I could continue if for self practice. Both areas pro-duce two different kinds of finish pieces.

For the build up to my FMP I wanted to have two different area of prac-tice to see which I would carry over and make it my Final major project. The whole point of my independent practice was not to just focus on find-ing my next project but also to learn new skills like film editing to screen-printing.

In the past I have not don’t a lot project that involved film editing, so I took upon myself to teach myself and do a small project of my choice, through out the project I had my trouble the main one of me losing my hard rive with the footage I was trying to edit. So this meant I had to start from scratch and put something together to show. Besides the trou-ble this was new software that I’ve only barley touch but hope to use in the future.

Both practice I have enjoyed working with a mix verity of work, still I think there is room for pushing my work further for example taking the football information graphics and turning it into a book or a phone app would be an extension of that practice.

FMP PROPOSAL During my time on this body of work I have displayed my chosen practice of interests and hope it would lead me an idea for my final major pro-ject. Designing something on the line of an information graphics because off my recent involvement with my football info graphics, I would like to produces a series of well thought out and interesting to look at designs. This will hopefully lead up to me editing them into a book.

Looking over at how some graphics can be dull and boring I hope to im-prove on the theme and style in my own way. Information and graphics are two practice areas I have really enjoyed working with and I wish to con-tinue this next term, thinking of working towards a final piece and un-derstanding the functions of a book. I believe this could be a good chal-lenge for me not just designing a book but also gaining new knowledge of understanding information and how I display it.

My main focus now is to research into the style of books and what divides the styles of book for one another. Also look at different themes so that I start collecting information on the chosen topic, then I can begin de-veloping a range of ideas for next term. Designing a book would also make me research on how much information I should display on a page.
