Game #1

Stanford 41, Navy 38September 10, 2005Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (35,670),Annapolis, MD

Walt Harris walked into his post-game interview carrying the game ball from his firstvictory with Stanford.

“I’m not bringing it to boast,” he said. “I’m bringing it because I’m proud.”Harris had plenty to be proud of in his first game on the Stanford sideline. Thanks to a fine performance by quarterback Trent Edwards, the Cardinal won its opener

under Harris, building a 14-point lead by early in the fourth quarter and holding on to beatNavy, 41-38, in the first meeting between the teams since 1965. Edwards went 21-for-33 for235 yards and threw one touchdown pass.

“It was a great game for our players to win, and it was a great win for us,” Harris said. “Ithought it was an excellent game.”

Stanford’s first drive under its new coach couldn’t have gone much better. The Cardinalscored the first time its offense had the ball, marching right down the field for a 73-yarddrive that took 10 plays and culminated when Edwards found Evan Moore in the end zonefor a 17-yard TD strike.

Navy pulled even when Stanford punt returner David Marrero fumbled when hit byReggie Campbell, and Marco Nelson ran 19 yards into the end zone with the loose ball.

The deadlock lasted 12 seconds – the amount of time it took T.J. Rushing to cover the 93yards on his second career kickoff return for a touchdown. Held to 13 yards on 10 carries inthe first quarter, Navy found its ground game early in the second period and tied it whenKarl Whittaker scored on a 44-yard run.

A 1-yard touchdown run by Nelson with 5:33 left in the half gave Navy its first lead, butStanford tied it on a 2-yard run by Nick Frank with 2:31 remaining before the break.

The Cardinal dominated the third quarter, outscoring Navy by a count of 14-3 in theperiod. Stanford would never trail after taking a 28-21 lead by moving 65 yards for a touch-down on the opening possession of the second half. Anthony Kimble scored on a 3-yard runand accounted for 34 yards rushing and 12 receiving on the drive. A 38-yard run byWhittaker set up Navy for a 39-yard Joey Bullen field goal to cut the Cardinal lead to 28-24,but late in the quarter Stanford used a bit of trickery to open up a 35-24 advantage. AfterEdwards completed four straight passes for a total of 50 yards, receiver Gerren Crochet ran areverse behind an excellent block by Frank and scored his first career touchdown on a 46-yard run.

Two Michael Sgroi field goals of 40 and 47 yards with 14:47 and 7:13 to go in the fourthquarter would be enough to hold off Navy and the pair of touchdowns scored by theMidshipmen in the final stanza when Nelson caught a 54-yard pass from Lamar Owens with12:38 left and Adam Ballard rushed in from four yards with 2:09 to go.

Navy tried an onside kick after Ballard’s score but Brandon Harrison recovered and theCardinal made a final defensive stand when Navy got the ball back one more time to secureHarris’ first victory for the Cardinal.

“We’re going to get home late, the guys are banged up and we’ve got to get back to work,”he said.

Evans led the Cardinal with 10 carries and 63 rushing yards, while Kimble rushed for 59yards on 11 carries. Frank had a team-high six catches for 45 yards from his fullback posi-tion, while Moore had a team-high 66 yards on three catches before dislocating his hip.Kevin Schimmelmann led the defense with 12 tackles (eight solo, four assisted) and one ofthe team’s 4.0 sacks.

Game #2

UC Davis 20, Stanford 17September 17, 2005Stanford Stadium (31,250), Stanford, CA

When Jon Grant hit Blaise Smith for a three-yard touchdown with just eight seconds onthe clock, the shock reverberated throughout the college football world and Stanford’s

nightmare had just become a reality. The 20-17 loss to Division I-AA UC Davis not onlyspoiled the home debut of head coach Walt Harris, it seemed almost unbelievable and pos-sibly unbearable.

“UC Davis came ready to play four quarters tonight,” offered Harris. “Our football teamwasn’t the same team it was last weekend (against Navy).”

Stanford jumped out to a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter on a MichaelSgroi field goal and a pair of fumble recoveries by Kevin Schimmelmann and MichaelCraven that turned into touchdowns, but trouble was brewing almost right from the starton the offensive side of the ball.

Starting quarterback Trent Edwards left the game with an injury after the team’s first twoseries. Backup T.C. Ostrander took the Cardinal 64 yards on his first drive but had a pass inter-cepted by Adam Cook at the Davis 1-yard line to thwart a Cardinal scoring attempt.

The pick would not end up hurting the Cardinal when Schimmelmann’s hit on Grantcaused the UC Davis quarterback to cough up the ball that would be recovered by theStanford linebacker in the end zone for his first collegiate score but foreshadowed a difficultoffensive evening for Stanford.

On the next UC Davis possession, the Aggies showed they could hang with the Cardinal bydriving 59 yards before finally turning the ball over on downs at the Stanford six-yard line.

Stanford sputtered on offense in the next possession, going three-and-out but Craven putanother Cardinal touchdown on the board when he rumbled 54 yards after BabatundeOshinowo caused a Nelson Doris fumble. That would be about the last highlight of thenight for the Cardinal.

Stanford’s defense would once again keep the Aggies put on their next possession but a fum-ble by punt returner David Marrero on the Cardinal’s own three-yard line set up a three-yardplunge by Doris and a missed 45-yard field goal by Stanford’s Michael Sgroi with just 0:44 to goin the first half would keep the score 17-7 in favor of the Cardinal at the break.

An Anthony Kimble fumble on the Stanford 41-yard line on the first Cardinal possession ofthe second half put the Aggies in business and Doris made the mood at Stanford Stadium veryserious when he capped a nine-play drive by scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:47 togo in the third quarter that pulled UC Davis to within 17-14.

With the Aggies now knocking on the door, the Stanford defense would stiffen and holdthe Aggies without a first down on their next four drives. However, with the Stanfordoffense continuing to sputter, UC Davis was able to stay in the game and managed to get infield goal range twice in the final quarter. But when Emmanuel Benjamin’s attempts to tiethe game from 41 and 32 yards came up short and sailed wide right, respectively, theCardinal breathed a collegiate sigh of relief.

But Stanford’s offense got just one first down on its next possession and gave the ball back toUC Davis. With one more chance, the Aggies started a drive with 2:42 remaining and silencedthe stadium 11 plays later when Grant connected with Smith in the end zone. Grant was thehero on the 72-yard drive, passing for 57 yards and rushing for the other 15.

Ostrander made a last-ditch pass, but it fell incomplete at the UC Davis five-yard line togive the Aggies the win.

Not only did UC Davis beat Stanford, the Aggies thoroughly outplayed the Cardinal, win-ning just about every statistical category. UC Davis outgained the Cardinal, 361-192, and helda huge advantage in time of possession by controlling the ball for 35:43 compared to just 24:17for the Cardinal. Grant finished with 251 yards passing and Tony Kays caught 10 balls for 115yards, while Ostrander (108) and Edwards (10) combined for just 118 yards in the air.

“It’s hard to pinpoint one thing,” Ostrander said. “Collectively on offense we didn’t getthe job done.”

After waiting two weeks to play following its shocking loss to Division I-AA UC Davis,Stanford looked like it might quickly redeem itself against a highly regarded Oregon

team. The Cardinal got on the board first when Michael Sgroi connected on a field goalfrom 42 yards out with 4:48 to go in the first quarter. Stanford was still in front, 10-7, at theend of first quarter after Oregon’s Jonathan Stewart and Stanford’s Mark Bradfordexchanged 11 and 2-yard touchdown receptions late in the opening period.

But, that was as good as things would get for the Cardinal as Oregon would score 37 ofthe game’s next 40 points and outgain Stanford, 595-220. Oregon quarterback KellenClemens threaded the Cardinal defense for 393 yards and three touchdowns on 22-of-29passing with Demetrius Williams accounting for 168 of the yards on six catches. Oregon’s463 total passing yards would rank as the third-most ever by a Cardinal opponent. JeremiahJohnson added 63 yards and a score on the ground.

Under constant pressure that resulted in five Oregon sacks, Stanford quarterback TrentEdwards managed to throw for 156 yards and a touchdown on 16-of-28 passing but waspicked off twice.

Clemens was also intercepted for the first time all season when Michael Okwo picked offa pass on the Stanford 45-yard with 8:49 to go in the opening period. Okwo’s interception, the first of his career, ended Clemens’ streak of 162 consecutive passes without an intercep-tion dating to back to 2004, the second-longest streak in Oregon history.

Oregon took the lead for good with 13:23 remaining in the second quarter whenClemens found Dante Rosario in the end zone from 18 yards out. The Ducks would scoreagain 4:41 before halftime when Clemens capped Oregon’s second consecutive 80-yard scor-ing drive with a 19-yard TD pass to Jaison Williams.

Michael Sgroi managed a 31-yard field goal with just 0:06 remaining in the first half after a12-play drive took the Cardinal 72 yards to cut Oregon’s lead to 21-13 at the break.

The Ducks dashed any hopes of a Cardinal upset quickly in the second half.Stewart scored twice on a pair of 1-yard runs and Paul Martinez added a 44-yard field

goal to make it 38-13 in favor of Oregon before the third quarter ended. Johnson increasedOregon’s lead to 44-13 when he scored his first career touchdown on a 5-yard run with 4:29to go in the contest.

Stanford’s Jon Alston blocked Aaron Knowles’ punt at the Oregon goal line with 3:56 toplay and fell on the loose ball for a Stanford touchdown to give Stanford its third defensetouchdown in its last two games, but it was far too little and too late for the Cardinal.

T.J. Rushing did record a milestone in the contest, becoming the seventh player inStanford football history to reach the 1000-yard career mark in kickoff returns. He had fivereturns for 108 yards in the game. Mark Bradford caught seven balls for 110 yards and atouchdown, while Jason Evans had a 62-yard rushing game.

The loss was Stanford’s fourth in a row to Oregon, marking the longest Cardinal losingstreak to the Ducks since Oregon won seven straight from 1957-63. Stanford also droppedits fourth consecutive home game to mark its longest skid at Stanford Stadium since losingits final four home contests of the 1984 campaign.

Despite the loss, head coach Walt Harris was optimistic after the contest.“We don’t like to lose to anybody, but we lost to a good team today,” said Harris. “They had

big guys and a good quarterback. We battled them and ran the ball better today, which we wereexcited about. Trent hung in there and Bradford stepped up and played more like we know hecan. As a coach, I’m opportunistically looking for the bright side. A coach tries to pull the bestout of his players. Our job is to get our players to respond, their job is to try to improve.”

Stanford 24, Washington State 21October 8, 2005Martin Stadium (33,442), Pullman,WA

After two consecutive frustrating home losses to UC Davis and Oregon, Stanford came upbig on the road in Pullman with a 24-21 victory over Washington State that would kick

start an impressive three-game Pac-10 win streak for the Cardinal.“Any win is a great win for our team,” said Stanford head coach Walt Harris. “This has been

a hard time. It’s been hard to have expectations and desires and not get it done. Today was atremendous victory for our team and our football program. There is nothing like winning.”

Trent Edwards had one of the best games of his career, completing 19-of-28 passes for 257yards and firing three touchdown strikes without an interception to give Harris his first Pac-10coaching victory. Edwards also rushed a career-high 92 yards on 12 carries as he finished with349 of the team’s 475 yards of total offense. The Cardinal added 218 rushing yards to its 257through the air with Anthony Kimble accounting for 77 of them on 18 carries.

Two of Edwards’ touchdown passes found the hands of Mark Bradford, while JustinMcCullum had the other Cardinal scoring catch. McCullum picked up 67 yards on fourreceptions, while Gerren Crochet caught five balls for 60 yards.

“It was a great win,” offered McCullum. “All sides of the ball – offensive, defensive andspecial teams – played great. It was great to have a real team win.”

Stanford got on the board first with 5:47 to go in the first quarter when Bradford grabbeda 17-yard TD pass from Edwards to cap an eight-play, 58-yard drive.

Washington State replied with an 80-yard drive, keyed by Jerome Harrison’s 69-yardscamper down the right side to the Stanford five. Alex Brink pushed across from the 1-yardline on fourth down to tie the game at 7-7.

Neither team would score again until the third quarter when Edwards hit McCullum inthe end zone from 19 yards out to put the Cardinal ahead, 14-7, with 7:55 to go in the thirdquarter.

Once again, Washington State responded with an 80-yard scoring drive that culminatedwith Harrison’s 8-yard TD run to tie the score again at 14-14.

This time, Stanford didn’t wait long to go right back in front, picking up its secondtouchdown on as many drives when Edwards hit Bradford from six yards out on the eighthplay of a 62-yard drive to put the Cardinal ahead, 21-14, with 0:16 to go in the third quarter.

Michael Sgroi kicked a 34-yard field goal with 7:16 remaining that gave Stanford a bit ofa cushion and ended up being the difference. The kick came after his 33-yard attempt wasblocked in the second quarter and a 38-yarder missed right in the third period.

Brink threw a 28-yard TD pass to Greg Prator with 4:01 remaining in the game to cut theCardinal lead to 24-21 and the Cougars forced the Cardinal to punt, getting the ball backwith 1:01 to go. But ,Nick Sanchez intercepted Brink at the Washington State 47-yard linewith 0:32 to seal the Stanford win.

“I think we had a good pass rush because the ball came out quick,” commented Sanchez.“I just dropped to my zone and the ball was there so I just grabbed it.”

Stanford controlled the ball for much of the game, finishing with 37:06 in possessiontime compared to just 22:54 for the Cougars.

Harrison had a huge day on the ground for Washington State with 218 rushing yards anda touchdown but the Cardinal held Brink to just 161 yards in the air on 13-of-26 passingand picked off the Cougar quarterback twice.

Mike Silva led the Cardinal defensive effort with a career-best nine tackles, while JonAlston had eight stops and Stanford’s only sack.

J.R. Lemon passed the 1000-yard career rushing mark during the contest.Stanford won its third straight game against Washington State in Pullman and beat the

Cougars for 11th time in the last 13 meetings between the clubs.

Game #5

Stanford 20, Arizona 16October 15, 2005Arizona Stadium (54,216),Tucson, AZ

An excellent defensive effort that caused five Arizona turnovers and two touchdown pass-es from Trent Edwards led Stanford to a hard-fought 20-16 victory over Arizona. It was

the second Pac-10 road win in a row and third straight victory overall away from StanfordStadium for the Cardinal, who was coming off a win at Washington State and had also beat-en Navy on the road to open the season. The three-game road win streak was the team’slongest since the 1995 club won its first four road contests. The Cardinal also had its firstback-to-back Pac-10 road victories since 1995 and its third straight overall against Arizona.

Stanford managed just 195 total yards and 11 first downs, but the Wildcats’ tough defensewas offset by the wealth of Arizona turnovers on offense. The Wildcat miscues led to greatfield position resulting in 13 Stanford points. Meanwhile, the Cardinal did not turn the ballover.

Arizona got out to a 7-0 lead when the Wildcats took the opening kickoff and marched80 yards in 15 plays with Gilbert Harris’ 1-yard TD run with 8:35 to go in the first quartercapping the impressive drive.

Stanford’s Michael Sgroi brought the Cardinal to within 7-3 when he hit his first of twofield goals with 11:28 remaining in the second quarter, a score that was set up when Arizonaquarterback Richard Kovalcheck fumbled at his own 42-yard line, the first of two fumblesby Arizona in the quarter.

Kovalcheck would also throw a second quarter interception that was picked off by T.J.Rushing at the Stanford 46-yard line and returned 19 yards to the Arizona 35. Five playslater, Edwards found Anthony Kimble for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 3:34 left in thehalf and Stanford took a 10-7 lead into the locker room.

Stanford established its authority with a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to start thesecond half and take a 17-7 lead. Edwards finished the drive off with a 10-yard scoring striketo Michael Horgan.

Arizona sliced the deficit to 17-14 when Mike Bell ran five yards for a score with 5:51 left inthe third quarter. Kovalcheck’s 21-yard pass to Stephen Steptoe started the four-play drive.

Kovalcheck’s second fumble came at Arizona’s 23 with 1:51 to play in the third quarterand although the Cardinal couldn’t muster a first down, Sgroi nailed a 34-yard field goal toincrease the Stanford lead to 20-14.

Arizona could only come up with a total of one first down in its next three drives butfinally advanced to the Stanford 34 on the following drive, but a sack and a penalty pushedthe Wildcats back and, on fourth-and-28, Brandon Harrison intercepted Kovalcheck’s des-peration heave to end the drive.

Stanford punter Jay Ottovegio, who averaged 45.1 yards per punt on a career-high eightpunts, ran out of the end zone for an intentional safety with 17 seconds to play to make thefinal score 20-16.

The Cardinal was forced to kickoff and Steptoe returned the ball to the Arizona 36-yardline but three more Kovalcheck passes failed to reach their target and Stanford had comeaway with a win.

Edwards completed 16-of-26 for 137 yards, while Kovalcheck was 20-of-38 for 161 andwas sacked five times. For the second game in a row, Edwards also led the Cardinal in rush-ing yards with 32, while Kimble had four catches for 37 yards and a touchdown.

Jon Alston had three of Stanford’s 5.0 sacks, while Nick Sanchez totaled a team-high 11tackles to lead a tough Cardinal defense. Spencer Larsen had nine tackles for the Wildcatsand one of Arizona’s two sacks.

Game #6

Stanford 45, Arizona State 35October 22, 2005Stanford Stadium (31,711), Stanford, CA

Trent Edwards passed for a career-high 303 yards and threw a career-high-tying three touch-downs, while Stanford scored 38 consecutive points in coach Walt Harris’ first home victory,

45-35 over Arizona State. The win was the third Pac-10 victory in a row for the Cardinal, mark-ing the first time Stanford had accomplished the feat since 1999, while its three-game win streakwas also its longest overall since taking the final four games of the 2001 regular season.

Mark Bradford caught nine of Edwards’ passes for 185 yards, both career-highs, includingtwo long TD receptions of 32 and 31 yards in the second quarter to help the Cardinal to adominating 31-7 advantage at halftime. Anthony Kimble caught a TD pass and ran foranother score in the first quarter, while Stanford’s offense remained airtight by not commit-ting a turnover for the third straight game.

“It was a big win for us today,” said Edwards. “It took defense, offense and special teams.”Stanford’s first score came one play after Udeme Udofia’s blocked punt was recovered by

Jon Alston at the Arizona State 15. Edwards’ short pass bounced high off Kimble’s hand –but Kimble managed to make a circus catch off his own deflection, then romped into theend zone for a 15-yard score exactly five minutes into the contest.

Sam Keller capped a 12-play, 80-yard Arizona State scoring drive with a 1-yard touch-down run with 5:02 remaining in the first quarter to tie the score at 7-7, but that tie wouldbe the closest the Sun Devils would come to leading as Stanford would score the next 38points without an Arizona State answer.

Kimble started Stanford’s scoring run with a 2-yard TD plunge with 1:56 to go in the firstquarter and by the time it was over Stanford had turned a 7-7 game into a 45-7 blowout.

Bradford caught TD passes of 32 and 31 yards at 6:16 and 1:01 of the second quarter, with his first catch capping an impressive 86-yard drive.

The Cardinal’s two blocked punts and a force of ASU punter Chris MacDonald into anillegal kick on a third all led to points, including Michael Sgroi’s 20-yard field goal at thehalftime gun to put the Cardinal up 31-7 that was set up when Michael Craven blocked anArizona State punt to give the Cardinal possession of the ball at the ASU 36-yard line withjust 1:13 remaining before the break.

Stanford continued the aggressive offense in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring two touchdowns in the first 8:07 of the third quarter and taking a 38-point leadafter a 1-yard Nick Frank run with 9:16 to go in the third and a 26-yard Mike Silva intercep-tion return with 7:53 remaining in the third quarter.

Arizona State made a comeback run late in the game, but it was not enough to overtakethe Cardinal. Four unanswered Sun Devil touchdowns to end the contest trimmed theStanford lead to 10, but Stanford held on for the win.

The Sun Devils’ Rudy Burgess had two of the scores at 3:20 of the third and 3:46 remainingin the fourth on an 18-yard pass from backup quarterback Rudy Carpenter and a 4-yard runthat sandwiched a 38-yard Carpenter-Terry Richardson hookup with 13:07 to go. Brent Miller’s19-yard touchdown reception with 1:00 to go closed out the scoring but the Sun Devils failedon a two-point conversation that would have made the game a one-score difference.

Edwards finished 19-of-27, while calmly directing Stanford’s offense to 38 points in the first36 minutes. Gerren Crochet rushed for 22 yards on one carry to lead a Cardinal rushing groupthat had just 66 net yards on 33 carries. Brandon Harrison had 11 tackles and KevinSchimmelmann added 10 to lead the defense, while the Cardinal had a season-high 7.0 sacks forthe second consecutive game with Babatunde Oshinowo’s career-high 3.0 leading the way.

Game #7

UCLA 30, Stanford 27October 29, 2005 Stanford Stadium (42,850), Stanford, CA

The type of loss Stanford suffered against UCLA is tough to forget. When Nick Frank scoredon a seven-yard run and Michael Sgroi followed with the extra point to put Stanford

ahead 24-3 with just 8:26 to go in the game, it looked like the Cardinal was going to pull offone of the biggest upsets of the college football season against the eighth-ranked and unbeatenBruins. But when Brandon Breazell pulled down Drew Olson’s 23-yard pass in the left cornerof the end zone, UCLA had rallied for an unbelievable 30-27 overtime victory.

Here’s how it happened. The Bruins took just 1:22 to score the first of three touchdowns over the final 8:26 of the

game, marching 65 yards on six plays with Maurice Drew putting the ball in the end zoneon a six-yard jaunt.

The Bruins needed just 34 seconds and three long Olson completions to cut the Cardinallead to 24-17. Olson hit Drew for 22 yards to start the drive, then connected with MarcusEverett for 19 and finally found Joe Cowan for a 31-yard touchdown.

UCLA got the ball back at its own 34-yard line with 2:30 remaining and Drew capped aneight-play drive with 0:46 remaining on a 1-yard run that erased what had been a 21-pointdeficit and dashed Stanford’s upset hopes.

The Cardinal had the first possession of the overtime but was only able to muster a 42-yard Sgroi field goal, and when Olson and Breazell hooked up on a 23-yard TD pass in over-time the improbable Bruin comeback was complete.

“This is a game we can learn a lot from as a team and a program,” offered Stanford quar-terback Trent Edwards. “[The loss] is a result of a lot of things. You have to stay on theaggressive side as an offense.”

For most of the contest, it looked like the Cardinal defense would put an end to UCLA’sunbeaten season and its offense would score enough points to get Stanford a huge victory. TheCardinal opened the game with its longest and arguably most impressive drive of the year, marching 88 yards in 13 plays that was capped when J.R. Lemon scored on a 13-yard screenpass from Edwards for the first receiving touchdown of his career.

The clubs then settled into the type of defensive struggle rarely seen in the high-flyingPac-10 with the only other first half score a 32-yard field goal by UCLA’s Justin Medlockwith 10:19 to go in the second quarter.

Neither team would score again until Stanford took advantage of Drew’s fumble at hisown 29-yard line and Edwards hit Lemon again on a nine-yard touchdown toss four playslater to put Stanford ahead, 14-3, with 4:16 remaining in the third quarter.

Sgroi put Stanford up 17-3 with a 40-yard field goal with 13:18 to play and then MarcusEverett fumbled while trying to stretch his catch past the first down marker on the Bruins’next drive to put the Cardinal back in business at the UCLA 37. Once again, the Cardinaltook advantage of the Bruins’ miscue with Frank igniting celebrations in the stands by rum-bling into the end zone from seven yards out to give the Cardinal a 24-3 advantage with just8:26 remaining.

Edwards was 18-of-25 for 169 yards for the Cardinal and passed for the two scores toLemon, who had six receptions for 50 yards and also rushed 16 times for 53 yards. But, theStanford defense gave up 200 yards in the fourth quarter after allowing just 147 in the firstthree. Frank rushed for a career-high 61 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown to leadStanford on offense, while Kevin Schimmelmann tied a season-high with 12 tackles andJulian Jenkins recorded a career-best 3.0 sacks and a season-high nine tackles.

Drew was both the leading rusher (18-85-2TD) and receiver (6-87) for the Bruins, whocame from behind in the fourth quarter for the fourth time in the 2005 campaign. SpencerHavner equaled Schimmelmann’s 12 tackles on defense and Justin Hickman had three ofUCLA’s five sacks.

Game #8

USC 51, Stanford 21November 5, 2005Los Angeles Coliseum (90,212), Los Angeles, CA

There wasn’t much drama in this highly anticipated first game between longtime friendsPete Carroll and Walt Harris as top-ranked USC took down the Cardinal 51-21 at the

Los Angeles Coliseum. The Trojans scored on each of their seven first-half possessions totake an insurmountable 44-7 lead at the break.

Matt Leinart had his usual pinpoint accuracy, completing 22-of-28 passes for 259 yardswith four touchdowns and no interceptions. Reggie Bush had another typical day by rushingfor 113 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries, while LenDale White contributed another60 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Dwayne Jarrett was a recipient of eight Leinartpasses for 101 yards, while nine different Trojan receivers caught balls.

USC took a 14-0 lead in the first four minutes when White scored on a 2-yard run with11:54 to go to cap an 80-yard drive following the opening kickoff, and Reggie Bush scoredon an impressive 42-yard scamper one play after Lawrence Jackson recovered a fumbled lat-eral by Trent Edwards.

White made it 21-0 when he covered the final 16 yards of an eight-play, 74-yard drivewith 6:04 still to go in the first quarter and Mario Danelo’s 21-yard field goal following anEdwards’ interception made it 24-0 Trojans at the end of the first quarter as USC fans cele-brated raucously.

USC gained 216 yards in the first period to just 11 for the Cardinal, who didn’t get a firstdown until the first play of the second quarter.

The Trojans picked up where they had left off in the first quarter when Leinart foundJarrett and Fred Davis on a pair of 19-yard touchdown strikes with 9:13 and 8:03 remaininguntil halftime. The first mistake the Trojans arguably made was when Danelo missed theextra point attempt after Davis’ TD, making the score 37-0.

Stanford finally got on the board when Edwards tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass toJustin McCullum at the 6:23 mark of the second quarter to complete a five-play drive thatcovered 65 yards in just 1:40.

USC punctuated its first half by marching 85 yards on a nine-play drive that finally endedwith a touchdown on a 1-yard pass from Leinart to Jimmy Miller.

After a tough first half, the Cardinal was able to regain the respect of the defendingnational champions in second half, outscoring the Trojans 14-7 in the final 30 minutes.

The Cardinal nearly scored on its first possession of the second half, marching 79 yards toget to the USC 1-yard line while keeping the ball for 13 plays and 6:23 before backup quar-terback T.C. Ostrander fumbled on fourth-and-goal.

Stanford would make good on its next possession after another long drive (14 plays, 80yards, 5:48) when Jason Evans scored on a 1-yard run with 22 seconds left in the third quarter.

USC got its final touchdown of the game when Brandon Hancock carried the ball infrom eight yards out with 6:44 remaining in the contest.

Stanford scored again with just 23 seconds to play when Gerald Commissiong capped offa 14-play, 73-yard Stanford drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Edwards completed 21-of-35 passes for 245 yards and one touchdown but was picked offthree times. Justin McCullum had career-highs of nine receptions and 135 receiving yardswith one TD.

“It’s tough to lose by any score, but we didn’t play like we know we can play,” summarizedHarris. “The turnovers were huge. Not only are they costly, but they were uncharacteristicand hurt us emotionally as much as anything.”

Game #9

Stanford 20, Oregon State 17November 12, 2005Reser Stadium (42,960), Corvallis, OR

Chalk this one up as an old fashioned team victory. The stats weren’t great, injuries weremounting and the Cardinal was playing in a hostile environment on a damp and cloudy

day, but somehow Stanford found a way to edge Oregon State, 20-16, and move within onevictory of bowl eligibility for the first time since the 2001 season.

“This game is all about our players, not our coaches,” said a proud Stanford head coachWalt Harris following the contest. “[It’s about] the effort that our players gave in doing whatthey had to do to play well in the game, finish the game, and find a way to win the game.”

“You’ve got to give a tremendous amount of credit to our players and how they hung inthere during some very tough times,” Harris continued. “We had a lot of guys get beat up,guys trying to play [with injuries]. But, we’ve put so much into it before we got to this point,as well as all the frustrations those kids have gone through trying to get past win numberfour. I think it all came out in those moments on the last drive.”

The last drive Harris was referring to was the one in which Oregon State managed to getstandout kicker Alex Serna a 52-yard field goal look in an attempt to try to tie the game. TheBeavers had moved the ball down to the Cardinal 32-yard line but Stanford’s defense stiffened, moving the ball back two yards on the next three plays. When Serna’s field goal attempt fellshort, bedlam erupted on the Stanford sidelines and a hush fell over Reser Stadium.

What eventually turned into a kicking and defensive battle looked like it might be a Pac-10shootout early on.

Oregon State went 80 yards in just six plays on the first drive of the game and scoredwhen Matt Moore hooked up with Anthony Wheat-Brown for a 24-yard TD pass only 1:24into the contest.

Stanford answered right back with a seven-play, 79-yard drive of its own to tie the gamewhen Trent Edwards hit Justin McCullum for a 3-yard scoring strike with 10:33 to go in thefirst quarter.

Michael Sgroi put the Cardinal ahead, 10-7, on a field goal with 2:23 left in the first quar-ter, while Edwards and McCullum got together again for a 20-yard touchdown with 6:52remaining before halftime to put Stanford up 17-7.

The Cardinal looked like it would take a 10-point lead into the locker room before JeffVan Orsow picked off an Edwards pass with 2:34 to go before the break and raced 24 yardsfor a touchdown.

Points would be much harder to come by in the second half.Sgroi put Stanford ahead, 20-14, with a 31-yard field goal on the first Cardinal possession of

the third quarter, but Serna missed a 37-yarder at the end of Oregon State’s next drive.Serna was able to connect on a 34-yarder with 1:47 remaining in the third period to cut

the Cardinal gap to 20-17 but Oregon State really never mustered another threat until itsfinal drive when Serna’s third miss of the day sent Beaver fans home with their first loss tothe Cardinal in the last five meetings between the clubs as Stanford won for the first time inCorvallis since 1997.

Justin McCullum finished with seven catches for 119 yards and his first two-touchdowncontest at Stanford, while Gerren Crochet caught five balls for 77 yards. Edwards, whoinjured his thumb late in the third quarter and was replaced by T.C. Ostrander, completed16-of-28 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns. J.R. Lemon led the Cardinal rushinggame with 46 yards on 14 carries, while Julian Jenkins had two of the six Cardinal sacks andNick Sanchez made a team-high seven tackles.

Oregon State outgained the Cardinal by a slim 312-302 margin with Yvenson Bernard pick-ing up 81 on the ground and Mike Hass catching six balls for 140 yards. But, the Beavers alsohad 11 costly penalties for 123 yards and Sam Paulescu was forced to punt nine times.

Game #10

California 27, Stanford 3November 19, 2005Stanford Stadium (71,743), Stanford, CA

The 108th Big Game hadlots of hype and intrigue

leading up to it. The ABCtelevised contest featured aStanford team that neededjust one victory to reach itsfirst bowl since 2001 and wasahead of California by agame in the conferencestandings, as well as a GoldenBear club that was comingoff a near Rose Bowl seasonin 2004 and had gotten off toa 5-0 start in 2005 beforedropping four of five prior tothe Big Game. The GoldenBears had their six victoriesthat qualified them to “gobowling” but their pride, anda three-game win streak over the Cardinal, was at stake.

Unfortunately for the Cardinal, the largest Big Game crowd (71,743) at Stanford Stadiumsince 1999 on a beautiful late November afternoon saw a primarily uneventful first half thatended with California on top, 6-3, and the Golden Bears dominating after halftime to endup with a 27-3 win that still left Stanford one victory short of qualifying for its first bowlsince 2001.

“In order to have championship-type games, you have to match up physically,” offeredStanford head coach Walt Harris after the contest. “Today, offensively, we did not match upphysically. We got beat up front, they were more physical, and that was the game. We havetrouble protecting the passer and running, and that sealed our fate.”

California’s first half score came thanks to a 56-yard hookup between first-time starterSteve Levy and DeSean Jackson with 9:05 to go in the first quarter.

The only other first half score came when Stanford’s Michael Sgroi connected on a 37-yard field goal with 9:54 remaining in the second period.

Justin Forsett capped a seven-play, 71-yard drive on California’s first possession of thesecond half to give the Golden Bears a 13-3 lead after a missed extra point by TomSchneider.

The game stayed within reach for the Cardinal until the Golden Bears tacked on two latetouchdowns with a 3-yard Marshawn Lynch run at the 7:14 mark of the fourth quarter anda 14-yard pass from Terrell Williams to Craig Stevens with 3:31 to go.

Lynch led the Golden Bears’ ground game with 123 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries, while Levy connected on 10-of-18 passes for 125 yards and a score.

T.C. Ostrander completed a season-high 15 passes in 23 attempts for 152 yards forStanford with Gerren Crochet (8-86) and Matt Traverso (4-55) both notching career-highsin receptions and receiving yards. However, Ostrander and starting quarterback TrentEdwards (14-9-0-76-0) were roughed up by a California defense that recorded 9.0 sacks.

“It all starts up front,” said Edwards. “When you continually get beat on the line, youdon’t put yourself in a position to win. But, it’s also about the quarterback position and run-ning back position.”

Stanford had more trouble on the ground, rushing for a season-low 16 yards that con-tributed to the team’s lowest offensive output of the season and its lowest in the Big Gamesince California was a 26-3 winner in 1967.

Game #11

Notre Dame 38, Stanford 31November 26, 2005Stanford Stadium (56,057), Stanford, CA

The last game at the old Stanford Stadium turned out to be a great one. Stanford andsixth-ranked Notre Dame battled for most of the contest before the Fighting Irish finally

pulled out a 38-31 victory when Darius Walker scored on a 6-yard run with just 0:55 on theclock, capping a quick and impressive six-play, 80-yard drive that took just 51 seconds.

Just moments earlier, the Cardinal had sent the Stanford faithful into delirium when T.C.Ostrander hit Matt Traverso with a 4-yard touchdown pass that gave Stanford its first lead ofthe game and dripped of a perfect storybook ending to the 84-year-old stadium’s history.

Although the ending was not what Cardinal fans had hoped for and the loss left theCardinal one win shy of reaching a bowl game for the first time since 2001, Stanford had lotsto be proud of in the 5-6 first season of head coach Walt Harris as well as reason to believethat there would be many more exciting games and some thrilling victories in the future.

“I’m proud of this footballteam, to be down and comeback like we did,” said Harris.“We were competitive. Theseniors left us a lot of heartand showed us how to fight. We had a poor game lastweek and came back, regrouped and played wellagainst a sixth-ranked team.”

When the clock finally ranout, construction beganalmost immediatelyafterward with bulldozersand dump trucks pullingonto the field for aceremonial first dig that wasthe final event of a day thatalso included a halftimeceremony in honor of thestadium with dozens offormer players in attendance.

Notre Dame started the final game at the old Stanford Stadium by scoring on its firstpossession when Brady Quinn found Jeff Samardzija for an 80-yard touchdown just 15seconds into the game.

On Notre Dame’s next possession, Kevin Schimmelmann intercepted a pass by Quinn toset up Trent Edwards’ 27-yard TD pass to Mark Bradford that tied the game at 7-7 with11:38 left in the first quarter.

Quinn connected with Samardzija again for a 7-yard scoring pass with 7:38 to go in theopening stanza on Notre Dame’s next series to cap an eight-play, 72-yard drive.

Once again, the Cardinal answered back by tying the game at 14-14 on a 38-yardtouchdown pass from Edwards to Justin McCullum 8:14 before halftime.

The teams went into the locker rooms tied before Notre Dame snatched the lead back onQuinn’s 10-yard scoring strike to Maurice Stovall with 8:43 remaining in the third quarteralthough D.J. Fitzpatrick missed the extra point. Carl Gioia’s 29-yard field goal with 13:29 toplay in the fourth made it 23-14 in favor of the Fighting Irish.

Then, things got exciting.T.J. Rushing immediately responded with an 87-yard kickoff return to cut the Notre

Dame lead to 23-21 but UND went 66 yards on nine plays when it got the ball back, extending its lead to 30-21 on an 8-yard touchdown run by Travis Thomas with 9:44 to go.

Michael Sgroi pulled the Cardinal to within 30-24 when he hit a 31-yard field goal with5:21 remaining and Fitzpatrick missed a short 29-yard field goal attempt with 2:15 to gothat would have made it a nine-point and two-score lead.

The Cardinal made the most of its opportunity when Ostrander hit Bradford for 76 yardsto get down to the Notre Dame 4-yard line and went ahead 31-30 two plays later with 1:46left when Ostrander connected on his 4-yard touchdown pass to Traverso.

Notre Dame ended up victorious thanks primarily to an offense that accumulated 663yards. Quinn threw for 432 yards and three touchdowns, completing 25-of-38 in the air. Hehit Jeff Samardzija eight times for 191 yards and two touchdowns, while Maurice Stovalladded seven catches for 136 yards and a score. Walker controlled the ground game, rushing35 times for 186 yards and the game-winning touchdown that made Notre Dame eligiblefor its first Bowl Championship Series berth in five years.

Ostrander replaced Stanford starter Trent Edwards (20-12-0-150-2), who had been forcedout of the previous two games with injuries and re-aggravated a problem in his throwingarm, in the third quarter and finished with a season-high 197 yards and a touchdown passwhile hitting on 11 of his 15 pass attempts.

J.R. Lemon managed 40 yards on 12 carries but the Stanford rushing attack ended upwith a net total of -11 that was its sixth-lowest in school history. Bradford had five catchesfor 124 yards and a touchdown, while McCullum finished with 101 yards and a touchdownon six receptions.

Victor Abiamiri had four sacks that moved Stanford back 43 yards among his team-high10 tackles, while Nick Sanchez tied a career-high 11 tackles for the Cardinal.
