FOREWORD

In the rapid changing global scenario, the quality agro inputs and products at competitive

pricing with consumer awareness along with environmental sustainability are the key elements for

development of sophisticated, remunerative technologies for commercialization as per the demand of

farming community and public. Anand Agricultural University (The then Institute of Agriculture), a

vision of Iron Man of India „Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel‟ for foundation of a rural education and

research institute for training farmers‟ children‟s in 1940 is now a full-fledged University with 7

Colleges, 17 Research Stations and 22 Extension Education Centers is setting new records in

Agricultural Research, Education and Extension in Western India with a pool of more than 350

technocrats and scientists. In view of this, Agri-business through National Agricultural Innovation

Project (NAIP) Component-1 funded project BPD unit is setup since Oct 2010, remained a successful

venture of AAU for TOT and PPP for number of developed products and advanced technologies. The

AAU BPDU is also in national network in National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) for

technology validation, technology transfer and enterprise development to support innovators who

want to start new agri-businesses across agricultural sectors, animal husbandry, dairy, veterinary,

fisheries, agriculture and horticulture. This agri-business incubator (AAU BPDU) has also worked for

public awareness about exciting opportunities for innovators and entrepreneurs in agribusiness in a

win-win relationship. AAU BPDU has grand success within a short span of four years endowed with

new era of successful agri-entrepreneurship and business incubation in the western part of country

with massive positive social impact and also for employment generation. AAU BPD Unit is also

recognized by Government of India to implement scheme “Support for Entrepreneurial and

PREFACE

With the opening up of economy and global trading, to make the Indian agriculture

competitive par excellence with international standards, traditional agriculture has to be seen as

agribusiness now. One way to equip agripreneurs is to let them face the competition and learn from

the market forces – survival of the fittest. The other is to make well-concerted efforts to develop their

capabilities to withstand the onslaught of free market forces and external competition through well-

directed training, retraining and counseling interventions including simulations and prototype

modeling. As the name indicates, a business incubator nurtures a start up business/entrepreneur till it

can survive on its own. Though agribusiness incubation was a relatively new concept in India when

AAU BPDU was set up in Oct 2009 with majority funding from World Bank through its flagship

project- National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP), Component-1 with the major goal of

accomplishing science and technology-led, sustainable socioeconomic gains by applying inventions

emerging from the AAU and other State Agril universities through technology validation, technology

transfer and enterprise development.

AAU BPDU is one of the business incubators situated in academic institution and specifically

supports Agri start ups, nurtures agro innovations, technology commercialization by licensing, R & D

support and also facilitates funding to start up agribusinesses from various sources. Due to strong

inside research institutes, AAU BPDU have taken up the task of commercializing viable technologies

easily, evolving from their parent / host and surrounding institutes of Western India lacking BPDU for

the scientists working in these research institutes through NAIP funded project devising new

technologies with their research efforts. Within a short span of four years, fabulous results have been

achieved by AAU BPDU. Six technologies of AAU and four technologies of other institutions have

been commercialized benefiting 15 companies. Also, few consultancy assignments have been

completed to support small and medium entrepreneurs, funding has been mobilized for start up

incubatees from various agencies and many have graduated out of AAU BPDU with development of

national and international linkages for agri business nurturing and supporting agro GDP of state and

nation.

Governing Board. Post MoU signing, timely and smooth implementation of the MoU ensured by

the technocrats & scientists of AAU and they were assisted by BPD Unit. Post expiry of MoU

period, graduation and impact assessment study were also carried out.

Technology Brief:

Liquid Bio-Fertilizer

Bio-fertilizers are preparations containing effective strains of micro-organisms like

bacteria, algae, fungi in vegetative or latent stage alone or in combination in sufficient

numbers which can provide plant macro nutrients through microbial activity.

Types of liquid Bio-fertilizers:

A) Nitrogen fixers

Azotobacter: Of the several species of Azotobacter, A. chroococcum happens to be the

dominant inhabitant in arable soils capable of fixing N2 (2-15 mg N2 fixed /g of carbon

source) in culture media. It is recommended for Cereals (Wheat, Maize, Pearl Millet,

Sorghum, Rice, Oat), Oilseeds (Mustard, Castor, Sesame, Sunflower, Linseeds), Cash

Crops (Sugarcane, Cotton, Potato, Onion), Vegetables and Horticultural crops.

Azospirillum:Azospirillum lipoferum and A. brasilense (Spirillum lipoferum in earlier

literature) are primary inhabitants of soil, the rhizosphere and intercellular spaces of root

cortex of graminaceous plants. They perform the associative symbiotic relation with the

graminaceous plants. They are Gram negative, Vibrio or Spirillum having abundant

accumulation of poly- beta-hydroxybutyrate (70%) in cytoplasm. It is mainly

recommended for use in cereal crops.

B) Phosphate Solubilizing Micro-organisms (PSM): Several soil bacteria and fungi,

notably species of Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Penicillium and Aspergillus etc. secrete

organic acids and lower the pH in their vicinity to bring about dissolution of bound

phosphates in soil. Inorganic Phosphorous in the soil is present in the bound form with

Aluminium, Calcium and Iron. All forms exist in all soils, but Al-P and Fe-P are more

abundant acid soils, while Ca-P dominates in neutral-alkaline soils. The Al-P and Fe-P

can constitute generally 8-10% of total P in soils. The Ca-P can constitute 40-50 % or

even greater of total P in many neutral-alkaline and calcareous soil. LBF useful for all type of

Agricultural, Horticultural and Ornamental crops

Date Palm Tissue Culture Technology

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) (2n=2x=36) is a dioecious, perennial, monocotyledon

fruit tree that belongs to family Arecaceae. It is a very important fruit tree of arid and

semi-arid regions of the world due to its high tolerance to environmental stresses. This

fruit tree also has the potential of generating good income and foreign exchange from vast

unproductive tracts of land (esp. Arid regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan).

Traditionally, date palm is propagated through off shoots, however, this propagation

method has the several limitations like:

The traditional method of vegetative propagation by offshoot is very slow, laborious,

time-consuming and expensive.

Offshoots are produced in a limited numbers for a certain period in the lifetime of a

date palm tree,

The number of offshoots produced by an individual date palm tree is highly variable

and also varies from one cultivar to another.

Non availability of planting material of local elite genotypes.

Biodiesel

Anand Agricultural University has established an integrated experimental plant for

mechanized production of biodiesel from Jatropha seeds on its campus. The post-

harvest handling and processing technologies for seed extraction, seed DE hulling

and oil expelling have been developed relevant machines designed.

The plant is designed to process 1000 liters of biodiesel per day.

The entire system has been designed in-house with a centralized control panel.

The integrated mechanized processing line starting from receiving the seeds to

dispensing biodiesel has been established.

Provision for refining and further processing of by-products is available.

The developed technology is an end-to-end approach for decentralized energy self-

sufficiency through NGO‟s, farmer co-operatives and cottage industries.

Continuous Basundi Making Machine

Basundi is an Indian dessert relished mostly in Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat and

Karnataka. It is a heat desiccated, thickened milk dessert, having white to light caramel

color, creamy consistency with soft textured flakes that are uniformly suspended

throughout the product matrix. It contains all the solids of milk in an approx. two fold

concentration plus additional sugar, with high food nutritive value. Additives increase the

caloric value of the product. The sensory and rheological quality of the “Basundi” made

by continuous Basundi making machine is better than Basundi made by traditional

method. It has typical pleasant caramel flavor. The average sensory score of the product

was 93/100.

Area Specific Mineral Mixture

Seven minerals Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, S and Cl are required by animals in quite large amounts

i.e. in grams per day and are measured in the diet either as g/kg or as percent. These are

classified as major minerals or macro minerals. (Underwood and Suttle, 1999). Other

minerals are present in the body tissue at levels of less than 0.01 %. Requirements for

these are very small, typically mg/day or as ppm or even lesser. These are referred as the

trace minerals or micro minerals (Mertz, 1986). Minerals which are required in the diet at

less than 50µg/kg are sometimes called as ultra-trace minerals (Nielson et al., 1980).

Though macro minerals are required in large quantities in livestock ration, trace minerals

are metabolically more important than macro minerals as trace minerals are involved in

various biochemical reactions for activation of enzymes.

Social Impact

By commercialization of liquid bio-fertilizer Technology: The liquid Biofertilizers can replace

the chemical fertilizers particularly N and P by 25%. Thus their production will be reduced by

25% and GHG emission will also decline to 30.46 million tones. Business Planning and

Development Unit, Anand Agricultural University, Anand (Gujarat) India has done a

commendable work in commercializing the Liquid Biofertilizer Technology on a large

scale among the agribusiness industry and ensuring its reach to the remotest farmers.

From the survey it was found out that 36% of the farmers were using the LBF for the first

time and from last six months.27% of the farmers were using it from last one year. It was

also found out that 22% of the farmers were using LBF since 2 years and 7% of them

from last three years.4% of the farmers were using it since 4 years and 2% of them from

last five years and more than five years respectively. The farmers from Anand were found

to be using it since long time followed by the farmers of Kheda and Vadodara. The

farmers from Panchamahal and Dahod were the new users.

By commercialization of Date Palm Tissue Culture Technology: Tissue Culture Laboratories

generally employ women from the surrounding villages for semi-skilled jobs like bottle washing,

drying and cleaning. The tissue culture lab of Orchem Industries would be employing around 20

women from the lower strata of the society from the surrounding areas thus creating a meaningful

social impact.

By developing entrepreneurs on banana fiber extraction: AAU BPDU incubatee Mr. Prakash

Francis under our mentoring and guidance is processing banana pseudo stems to fibers which are

bought back by Navsari Agricultural University @ `100 per Kg on dry weight basis. Banana

pseudo stem is not only a waste but is also problematic as after harvest, they are heaped by

farmers on field bunds and they start stinking after sometime causing environmental pollution and

thus increasing global warming.

AAU BPDU another incubatee Mr. Ashish Khatri is also extracting fiber from Banana pseudo stems

and further processing into fiber, pulp and sap into many useful products. His business plan for the

venture prepared by us has been selected for presentation a Global Social Venture Competition

(GSVC) at Indian School of Business, Hyderabad.

11. Constraints, if any and Remedial Measures Taken

Long channel of command, too much paper work and reporting followed with administrative

procedures as well as hurdles, all approvals to be taken far in advance, delays in decisions by

authority hampers work, as companies needs consultancy support to technology licensing in

days to sustain in competitive market.

Autonomy to Head/CPI of BPD like drawing distributing and financial management. Host

University may be facilitator to BPDU but enforcement of University rules, administrative

processes and policies of State Agricultural Department and rules of state finance department

are hampering activities.

Sharing of BPDU income and share to technocrats & scientists to be provided on completion

of MoUs or at the end of the NAIP project completion at university/ institute or Revenue

generated may be handled by National Co-coordinator to share following the formula, as per

ICAR guideline, Ref. Page No.-87, Annexture-9 (NRDC proposed)

Reward amount (technology commercialization / consultancy fees) 100% as follows:

1. Scientists and team (equal sharing) = 60%

2. Dept. development fund disposal of unit officer, BPDU=25%

3. University development fund=15%

Travel & Administration: TA/DA of BPD staff to be reimbursed on actual basis, Air travel

should be allowed for out of state journey to save time and effectively utilization of project

domestic travel grant.

How to overcome it:

Leaders and administrators sensitization followed with binding from leaders to be taken by PIU

NAIP for holistic support at local level also to make mindset change in scientists &

administrative staff to this newer commercialization approach.

21. Steps Undertaken for Post NAIP Sustainability

Registering BPD Unit as Section 25 Companies like Agro Innovate India Ltd.

BPD to make a permanent structure of ICAR as network project under ADG (IPR) or under

Agro Innovate India Ltd. Company.

Handholding of the BPDs must be continued during the plan period through ICAR funding till

becomes totally self sufficient.

Alternative funding support from Plan scheme of State Government of Gujarat as well as

Technology Business Incubator fund from DST is sought by CPI.

CPI will take approval of Governing Body to utilize Net revenue (Approx. ` 27, 62, 925 lakhs)

after sharing of scientist and university share (Approx. ` 27, 04, 382 lakhs) from Gross revenue

gathered (` 59.45416 lakhs) for continuation of BPDU at AAU till alternative funding will be

available.

22. Possible Future Line of Work

(Comments/suggestions of CPI regarding possible future line of work that may be taken up arising out

of this sub-project)

Networking of the BPDs for better incubation services and technology-sharing.

Assistance & parameters for evaluation of individual BPDs should be based on individual region

specific variations and not on the same yard-stick for all BPDs.

The technologies developed by NARS system need to be refined/ revalidated before pushing

them for commercialization. The cost benefit ratio of each technology ready for

commercialization should be worked out at different scales. Scale neutral technologies are

needed to be developed/commercialize.

Commercialization of national level successfully sold technologies from BPDUs may be

promoted internationally in South-East Asian and African countries.
