PROGRAMME The Eighth International Workshop on Matrices and Statistics will be held at the University of Tampere on Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7, 1999 (starting with a reception on the Thursday evening). This Work-shop is a Satellite Conference of the 52nd Session of the International Statistical Institute to be held in Helsinki from Tuesday, August 10 through Wednesday, August 18, 1999. The purpose of this Eighth Workshop is to stimulate research and, in an informal setting, to foster the in-teraction of researchers in the interface between matrix theory and statistics. This Workshop will provide a fo-rum through which scientists working in the areas of linear algebra/matrix theory and/or statistics may be bet-ter informed of the latest developments and newest tech-niques and may exchange ideas with researchers from several different countries. Selected refereed papers from this Workshop will be published in a Special Issue on Linear Algebra and Statistics of Linear Algebra and Its Applications. The Workshop will include invited and contributed talks, poster session, and a sessions of PhD students.

Opening Session

The Opening Session of the Workshop, chaired by Simo PUNTANEN (University of Tampere) and George P. H. STYAN (McGill University), will be held in Paavo Koli Auditorium of the University of Tampere, on Friday 6 August 1999, starting at 9:00 a.m. Kari-Jouko RÄIHÄ, Vice Rector of the University: Words of welcome on behalf of the University Tapio NUMMI, Head of the Department: Words of welcome on behalf of the Department Furthermore, some words will be said about Profes-sor Bernhard FLURY, who was unexpectedly taken away in a tragic accident in Bolzano, 6 July 1999.

Sauna Party

A Sauna Party in Finnish style (Finns take partying very seriously) will be arranged on Friday evening, the 6th of August, in Viikinsaari Island. The boat leaves from Laukontori Harbour at 18:00. This evening will include a chance to sit three hours in the heat of 80˚C — in which case one loses a lot of sweat, misses the flamed salmon dinner, an international soccer match, and a pleasant stroll around the island. The After-Sauna part of the evening is hosted by Ninni MARTIKAINEN & FINNSTARS. Tarmo PUKKILA, Ex-Rector of the Tampere University, will give an After-Sauna Speech entitled “Is there life outside the universities?” Preliminary programme is as follows: 18:00 The boat leaves from Laukontori

Harbour. 18:15 Arrival at Viikinsaari. 18:20 Welcome Toast. 18:30–18:45 Finland vs Rest of The World — All Star

Teams in Soccer, Viikinsaari Olympic Stadium.

19:00–21:00 Dinner: Flamed salmon. Walk around the island is recommended

(30-40 min). 21:45–22:45 After-Sauna Party in the Restaurant of Vi-

ikinsaari ... along the notes of Ninni Mar-tikainen & Finnstars and the After-Dinner Speech by Tarmo Pukkila.

23:00–23:15 Boat trip back to midtown. 23:30–24:00 Midnight-beer and 'Pumpulitehtaan tytöt',

a dancing performance for hundred seam-stress and sewing machine, in downtown.

You can go to sauna at any time you find convenient from 18:45 to 21:30. There are separate dressing rooms and showers for women and men. The hot part of the sauna (löylyhuone & vihta) is available as follows:

18:45-19:30 Women 19:30-20:00 Men 20:00-20:30 Women 20:30-21:00 Men 21:00-21:30 Women & Men Please take your own swimming suit with you. Towels and beer will be provided. To guarantee your participation in the Sauna Party, the payment FIM 150 should have reached the Workshop Secretary before 1 June 1999. Only a limited number of tickets will be available later on.

HOW TO REACH TAMPERE ?

Tampere, the largest Nordic city without access to the sea — a city of most reserved and introverted people of Finland — is located 170 km north of Helsinki, between Lake Pyhäjärvi and Lake Näsijärvi.

Trains from Helsinki to Tampere depart hourly. In the IC trains the seat reservation is required. Travel time 2 hours. The train stations of Tampere and Helsinki are right in the city centres. If you arrive at Helsinki Airport, then you may take an Express Bus from the Airport directly to Tampere. Travel time 2.5 hours, departing every 1 - 2 hours. Finn-air buses to Helsinki city centre leave from the airport every 20 minutes between 5:45–1:10. Finnair also offers connections between Helsinki and Tampere. The flight time is 30 minutes. For all timetables, see the links in the Workshop’s web site.

RE-INVENTING REGRESSION THRU GRAPHICS

Thursday, 19 August 1999 As a related activity, a full-day short course on Regres-sion Graphics, by R. Dennis COOK and Sanford WEISBERG

(University of Minnesota, St. Paul, USA) will be arranged in Tampere on Thursday, 19 August 1999. This is a one-day course consisting of six sessions of about one hour each. Textbooks of the course are Cook, R. Dennis and Weisberg, Sanford (1994). An In-

troduction to Regression Graphics. Wiley. Cook, R. Dennis (1998). Regression Graphics: Ideas for

Studying Regressions Through Graphics. Wiley. Furthermore, there is a new Wiley-book entitled Applied Regression Including Computing and Graphics that will correspond exactly to the short course. It is scheduled to be published sometime between August 1st and September 10th Timetable 10:15-13:00 Morning Sessions 13:00-14:15 Lunch 14:15-17:00 Afternoon Sessions 17:15-18:30 Coffee & Tea in the Department

All lectures will be held in Paavo Koli Auditorium of the Pinni Building.

ABSTRACT Regression is the study of the change in a response variable as one or more predictors are varied. It is used in most areas in science, to judge the effectiveness of a treatment, to form prediction equations, and for many other purposes. In this course, we present a new context for regression that requires few scope-limiting assumptions, and a corresponding collec-tion of new methodological tools. Many of these tools use

Page 10: Final Programme (as 15 July) The Eighth International Workshop … · 2011. 5. 10. · 4 5 The Eighth International Workshop on Matrices and Statistics 6—7 August 1999, Tampere,

4 5

simple graphs, along with a well-developed theory, to discover information about the dependence of a response on the predictors. All the methods flow from a few key ideas con-cerning dimension reduction, understanding the role of the distribution of the predictors on the problem, and ways to think about and use graphs in regression analysis. All the methodology discussed will be illustrated with a computer package called R-code that can be used for all the new methods described, and many standard methods for linear regression, nonlinear regression and generalized linear models. A copy of the most recent version of R-code, which runs on the Mac, PC or Unix, will be made available to all workshop participants for use in their own work.

LEARNING OUTCOMES Regression analysis is one of the fundamental tools for the practicing statistician. The traditional role of graphics in re-gression, at least with many predictors, has really been pe-ripheral, dealing mostly with questions of model adequacy. Regression graphics moves graphs to the center of analysis. This requires some new theory, but this theory will be pre-sented at a very general and intuitive level. Our hope is to encourage the participants to use this approach in their own work, and in their own teaching.

REGISTRATION Registration fees: Before 1 June 1999: FIM 300 Students: FIM 30 After 1 June 1999: FIM 400 Students: FIM 200 For further details, see the link in the web site of the Workshop.
