Industrial Research (CSIR-NPL), New Delhi; organized by CSIR-NPL and co-sponsored by the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, New Delhi under the aegis of project, “Generic Development of Nanometrology for Nanotechnology at NPL”. The objective of workshop was to spread awareness about need of nanometro logy, uncer ta in ty in measurement , nanodimensional and low level voltage, resistance & current measurements.

The three day workshop was attended by thirty-eight participants from industry, testing and calibration laboratories and R & D institutions of India namely; Electronics Research and Testing (ERTL), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Electronics Test & Development Centre (ETDC), Central Manufacturing Technology Institute ( CMTI), Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), Maruti, National Physical Laboratory ( NPL) etc.

During the three day workshop various informative and interactive lectures were delivered namely Need for Nanometrology, Evaluation and expression of uncertainty in measurements and low level voltage measurements by Dr. V.N. Ojha; Basic Concepts of Metrology, Metrological Traceability, Introduction to nanodimension measurements, Application of white light interferometry for step height and roughness

his seminar was held at Desun Hospital & Heart Institute, Kolkata-700107 on September T

24, 2011, jointly organized by Metrology Society of India (ER), and Desun Hospital. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. P.K Dutta, Head, Biomedical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. He gave an elaborate lecture on Biosensors in medical application. Talking about the objective of the seminar, Mr Sajal Dutta, Chairman of Desun Hospital stressed that technology is available but the most important thing is that the cost factor. Sighting an example he said that if the Indian Engineers and Doctors can join hand developing a low cost device like ion beam accelerator for cancer treatments, then it will be wonderful. In the welcome address, Dr Ranjan Sen, Chief Scientist,CSIR- CMERI, Durgapur and Chairman of MSI-ER at first gave a broad overview of MSI and then briefly touched upon the benefits of tissue engineering, genetic engineering, neural engineering, latest medical devices including imaging and implants.

Dr. Debashis Chatterjee one of the renowned Physician of Desun Hospital talked on the day-to-day application and necessity of correct measurement for medical treatments. Dr. Prof Subir Dutta another very renowned pathologist of Kolkata talked at length on pathological measurements. Dr. Pradip Mitra, Director SSKM Hospital, spoke on current doctor's view on measurement needs for better treatments. Mr. S Dasgupta, Dy. Managing Director Desun Hospital and Organising Secretary of this seminar also gave a very lively lecture and concluded that the patient service depends on Quality of the medical equipment, output result generated by the equipment, periodical maintenance of this medical equipment, calibration of all the necessary equipment used for patient service, validation of the output/test result of the equipment. Last speaker of the day was Dr. Supraka Maity, Ex-ETDC Director, Guhahati. He elaborated on the concept of calibration for electro medical Equipment. On the whole the program was a grand success with over 70 audience from Biomedical Engineering colleges in Kolkata and lab-personnel from NABL Accredited Labs, from Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. Mr. S. Ramsey's “method of separated oscillatory fields” made it possible to measure molecular frequencies precisely enough to investigate small magnetic interactions, going beyond the magnetic resonance methods of his Ph. D. adviser, I.I. Rabi (Nobel laureate 1944). The technique is now known as the Ramsey method. It was used in the hydrogen maser, developed to measure the effect of gravity on time. It led to the development by others of the world's most accurate timekeeper, the cesium atomic clock. Since 1967, the second has been defined as the time during which the cesium atom makes 9,192,631,770 oscillations. Ramsey's research also led to invention of the MRI machinery now used extensively in medicine.

Prof. Norman Ramsey shared his Noble Prize money with his colleagues and students. This included Dr. B. S. Mathur, who did his Ph. D. with him at Harvard and was Head, Time and Dr. A. Sen Gupta, Prof. Ramsey,
