TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL PREP WORK:

• Before starting, carefully read through the entire instruction sheet.

• Refer to the material list to the left and confirm that you have the correct amount of wood for this project.

Instructions below are for one Planter Bench. Write the number of benches you want to make in the upper left box, then inventory materials by multiplying the “Quantity Each” by

this number.

SEAT SUPPORT BEAM: 1. Sort two (2) 4x4x10’ pieces. These will not be cut.

PLANTER BASE: 1. Sort eight (8) 4x4x8’ pieces from your lumber. 2. Measure and cut three (3) 31” lengths from each piece.

PLANTER BASE: 1. Sort seven (7) 4x4x8’ pieces from your lumber. 2. Measure and cut four (4) 24” lengths from each piece.

SEATS: 1. Sort five (5) 2x4x8’ pieces from your lumber. 2. Measure and cut three (3) 31” lengths from each piece.

FINAL INVENTORY

2. Connect the two planter bases with the 4x4x10’ beams, sandwiching 24” pieces between them as pictured. Build three more levels on top of the 4x4x10’ beams to complete the planters (each planter should be a total of 7 courses high).

Today you will build _____ Planter Bench(es)!

Above is a picture of what your finished project will look like.

Follow the instructions below – and most importantly, have fun!

Note: Assemble planter benches as close to the final location as possible. Be sure to have benches in their final location before adding fill material.

1. Using the 6” nails and hammers, begin nailing together the planter bases using two (2) 4x4x24” and two (2) 4x4x31” for each course. Nail at each of the points marked with a dot. Build two planters for each bench, and make each planter three levels high as shown to the right. Alternate the 31” and 24” pieces for each level. Note: You may want to use the ¼” drill bit to pre-drill the holes for the 6” nails.

3. Using the 2 ½” screws or 8d nails, attach the 2x4x31” pieces to the 10’ beams, leaving even-spaced gaps (about 1/4") between the pieces and between the end pieces and the planters.

4. Sand any cut or rough edges and decide whether the bench should be painted or sealed, then move it to its final location.

5. Fill the first ¾ of each planter box with dirt, rocks, or other fill material. Fill the remainder of each box with potting soil, then add the plants! Be sure to water them.

6. Clean up your work area and your planter bench is complete! Thanks for all your hard work!
