INTRODUCTION
You have the opportunity to gain a competitive advan-tage in one of the fastest growing agricultural markets in Central Asia.
India, the United Arab Emirates, Europe, and North America are already tapping into Afghanistan’s lucrative agri-business opportunities, and other countries are just waking up to the vast potential of Afghanistan’s agricultural sector.
Afghanistan’s economy has improved dramatically since 2001. Agriculture ranks as one of the strongest eco-nomic sectors, and there is a corresponding demand for investment in this area.
The Government of Afghan-istan and its partners are committed to facilitating private-sector growth and making sure that invest-ments are well-protected. Businesspeople like you will discover that Afghani-stan has so much to offer in terms of new investment possibilities.
Located at the crossroads of Asia, Afghanistan is po-sitioned to benefit from the surging consumer markets of India and China and is primed to increase exports worldwide.
Afghanistan is home to unique and high quality saffron, fruit, vegetables, and nuts. Afghanistan’s saffron recently scored the top prize in an international saffron competition. No-where else in the world do pomegranates grow as big and as sweet. The country’s native varieties of grapes and apricots lay claim to having the highest natural sugar content compared to varieties grown elsewhere in the world.
With its commitment to private-sector growth, its strategic location, and its abundant agricultural rich-es, Afghanistan is your silk road to business opportu-nities.
2
SAFFRON
Afghanistan produces approximately 0.6 percent of the world’s saffron, but has the potential to grow exponentially. In December 2012, Afghanistan’s saffron was awarded first place for quality among 16 countries at the International Saffron Exhibition held in France. The saffron produced in Afghanistan, according to the officials, was the best, surpassing the others with its perfume, color, and taste.
Harvested:November to Early December
3
POMEGRANATES
Afghanistan has a long and ancient history in pomegran-ate exports, but the country is seeing a surge in global demand with the newly dis-covered health benefits of pomegranates. The country is home to many unique, high quality pomegranate varieties that are renowned for their sweetness and juiciness.
Harvested:Early September to Late November
Afghan pomegranates keep in storage for up to six weeks.
4
APPLES
Afghanistan exports excel-lent apple varieties, includ-ing the Red Delicious, the Golden Delicious, and the Gala. Grown mainly in Cen-tral Afghanistan, these ap-ples are distinctive for their size, deep red color, high brix content (very sweet), and crunchiness.
Harvested:Late August to Early Novem-ber
Afghan apples maintain their flavor and freshness up to seven months in cold storage.
5
GRAPES
Shondokhani, Kishmishi (or Thomson seedless), and Taifi are Afghanistan’s top-rated export varieties and some of the world’s best tasting grapes. A high brix level gives the fruit its distinctive sweetness. These varieties have a berry size starting from 16 mm and bigger. Their unique loose clustering gives the fruit a longer shelf life.
Harvested:Mid-July to Late September
Afghanistan grapes can last four to 10 weeks in cold storage and up to two weeks without refrigeration.
6
MELONS
Afghanistan’s melons are superior in taste and quality. Of about 15 of the best local varieties, four stand out for their excellent taste: Zarmati from Kunduz, Jintoor from Mazar-e Sharif, Arkani from Acqcha, and Zarda from Kandahar. Afghan melons are famous throughout the region for their sweetness. Their tough skin gives the fruit an extended shelf life and maintains their delicious taste.
Harvested:Mid-July to Late October
Afghan melons retain their delicious fresh-harvest flavor for 20 days without refriger-ation and up to 40 days in cold storage.
7
APRICOTS
Regarded as the best-tast-ing apricot, Afghanistan’s Amiri apricot is distin-guished from other varieties by its sweetness, with a brix level of 14-22. The highest brix level of apricots grown outside of Afghanistan is only up to 14. The Amiri is one of the few hardy vari-eties that handles shipping and transport well.
Harvested:Early July to Late August
The Afghan apricot has a long shelf life and retains its sweetness for up to one week without refrigeration. It keeps long in cold storage.

DRIED FRUIT
Afghanistan’s dried fruit and nuts are widely sought after for their quality and variety. Afghanistan produces an array of nuts including pis-tachios, almonds, walnuts, and pine nuts, and its dried fruit includes mulberries, apricots, figs, and white,
green and black raisins as well as chick peas and oleasters. Offering dried fruit and nuts to guests has been a staple of Afghan hospital-ity for centuries, and coun-tries around the world are finally partaking in Afghani-stan’s traditional delights.
9
JUICE
Afghanistan produces and exports high-quality juice and juice concentrate from the country’s apples, grapes, peaches, pome-granates, cherries, and pomegranates. Consumers in markets from Pakistan to the United Kingdom are enjoying Afghanistan’s juice made from organic fruit grown in the fields of local farmers and processed and packaged in modern facilities according tointernational safety stan-dards.
