It gives me immense pleasure to know that this year ASICON is being organized by Odisha state chapter of ASI in a historic city of Bhubaneswar. The format of the conference is also modified to suit the needs of the members of ASI.
The conference is organized by a very vibrant committee led by Dr C R Das & Dr Sreejoy Patnaik. I am sure that the scientific program shall be of high standard & meet the expectations of the delegates. Odisha is known for its culture & heritage. Organizing committee shall show case the glimpses of this during their cultural programs in this conference.
This ASICON shall be a great opportunity to all of us to have academics as well as cultural bonanza added with the hospitality & fellowship. I appeal to all members to attend the conference in large numbers & wish the organizing committee a grand success.
DR. DILIP S GODEImmediate Past President
Vice President
DR. P RAGHU RAM
Dr. Amiya Jenamani and the 'DYNAMIC TEAM ODISHA' are making every effort to ensure your visit is enjoyable and memorable – like never before!
Often referred to as 'The Temple City', Bhubaneswar is hosting this landmark Conference, which promises to be a seamless blend of Scientific extravaganza coupled with 'away from it all' Fellowship & Relaxation. The Organising Committee very ably lead by Dr. C.R. Das, Dr. Sreejoy Patnaik, Dr B.B. Mishra,
Needless to state, a lot of attention to detail has gone into planning the academic content of the Conference, which is all set to establish a benchmark for the future. I am confident that the 'new look' crisp Scientific Programme would undoubtedly attract a record number of delegates & trainees from across the Country and abroad.
I very much look forward to the distinct pleasure of meeting many of you at this landmark Congress – ASICON 2019.
Vice President (President elect), ASI
Nothing gives me more pleasure than to welcome you to Bhubaneswar – the Capital city of the State of Odisha. On a personal note, wish to share a 'never to forget' providential coincidence. I had participated in ASICON 1994 held in this State (Cuttack) when my dear father, Dr. P.V. Chalapathi Rao served as President ASI. Precisely 25 years later, the membership at large has given me the opportunity to participate in ASICON 2019 being held in this very State as Vice President of our esteemed Organisation.

ASICON 2019, BHUBANESWAR
Esteemed members of ASI,
It’s a great honor and privilege to have been bestowed upon the 79th ASICON , BHUBANESWAR and as the Organizing Secretary I take this opportunity to invite all my surgical fraternity to Bhubaneswar, the ideal destination for such a mega event .
This inflicts within me a challenge and I want to apprise my National leaders and the Executive committee members that the responsibility they have reposed on my shoulders would not go in vain and I promise to fulfill their expectations by a smooth conduction of this mammoth mega event.
ASICON is being hosted in Odisha for the 4th time, since it’s inception in 1938. For conducting a mega event like ASICON, one needs to do lots of planning, execution and a dream to achieve it . Getting a opportunity to host ASICON had been my dream since the ASICON that took place here in Bhubaneswar, way back in 2007, where I was a part of the organizing team, as the joint organizing secretary. Atlas, with the blessings and support of my National EC and fellow surgeons , I was able to achieve this milestone.
Surgical education, training and fellowship forms the backbone of ASI’s Golden mission , ie; “ ASI VISION & MISSION - 2019-2021 coined by our leaders, Dr Arvind Kumar and Dr P.Raghuram. I have complete faith in my young, energetic, devoted organizing team & their responsibilities and I am sure our mighty efforts will ignite the Association in all spheres and the glow from this fire can show light to our dreamt Mission-Vision. I hope this congress would be the largest podium to showcase the scientific work done by the members of the Association of Surgeons of India. We expect the best of the surgeons to participate in this scientific extravaganza, but we as organizers would be instrumental in bringing together the best minds in our field of surgery.
Apart from scientific agenda ae have planned social events of visiting the best of the tourist destinations of odisha which would be within your reach.
The entire organizing team is working day and night and I am sure they will make this event memorable to all of us. We also expect that no surgeon should afford to miss this MEGA EVENT. I request you all to register and be a part of this event.
Looking forward to meet and greet you personally at Bhubaneswar.

AboutBhubaneswar
HISTORY
Bhubaneswar is the capital of the Indian state of Odisha. It is the largest city in Odisha and is a centre of economic and cultural importance in Eastern India.
Although the modern city of Bhubaneswar was formally established only in 1948, the history of the areas in and around the present-day city can be traced to 3rd century BCE and earlier. It is a confluence of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain heritage boasting of some of the finest Kalingan temples. With many 6th-13th century CE Hindu temples, which span the entire spectrum of Kalinga architecture, Bhubaneswar is often referred to as a "Temple City of India". With Puri and Konark it forms the Swarna Tribhuja ("Golden Triangle"), one of eastern India's most visited destinations.
The foundation of the modern Bhubaneswar city was laid in 1948, although the areas in and around the city have a history going back to 1st century BCE or earlier.
Dhauli, near Bhubaneswar was the site of the Kalinga War (c. 262-261 BCE), in which the Mauryan emperor Ashoka invaded and annexed Kalinga. One of the most complete edicts of the Mauryan Emperor, Ashoka, dating from between 272–236 BCE, remains carved in rock 8 kilometres to the southwest of the modern city. After the decline of the Mauryan empire, the area came under the rule of Mahameghavahana dynasty, whose most well-known rule is Kharavela. His Hathigumpha inscription is located at the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves near Bhubaneswar. The area was subsequently ruled by several dynasties, including Satavahanas, Guptas, Matharas, and Shailodbhavas.

The Lingaraj Temple is an ancient shrine situated in the city of Bhuwaneshwar and is the largest temple situated in the city. Dedicated to Lord Shiva as the name suggests, the temple was built sometime in the 7th century by the King Jajati Keshari. The edifice of the temple is a great example of Orissa style of architecture and has intricately designed stone vaults covering the main sanctum of the temple. The Lingraj Temple houses a Shivalingam that rises to a massive height of 8 inches above the floor level and is about 8 feet in diameter as well.

A popular 11th-century Hindu temple that can be found in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, in India. The Raja Rani Temple is locally known as the 'love temple' because it contains some sensuous carvings of women and couples. No images can be found inside the sanctum, and hence the temple is not associated with any particular sect of Hinduism. This is perhaps exactly where the charm of the temple comes from. The temple belongs to no specific sect and is open to all people irrespective of the deity that they worship and admire.

Udayagiri ("Risen Mountain") is an archaeological-historical site 10 miles north of Sanchi (another famous historical site), and few miles from Vidisha--now a small town, but 1500 years ago a royal capital. Udayagiri is famous for a series of rock-cut caves and temples dating back to the Gupta Period (350-550 CE), a formative era for Hindu religious ideas. Such visible projects may have reflected the Guptas' personal piety, but were also clear political statements to display their ruling power.
Udayagiri CavesLocated at the banks of the Daya River, the Dhauli Shanti Stupa is considered to be the place where the ancient Kalinga war took place. The edicts of Ashoka describing the ancient war can also be found here along with a rock-cutelephant. After the Kalinga war, King Ashoka was moved by the bloodshed and adopted the teachings of Buddhism and non-violence. A peace pagoda named the Shanti Stupa was also built here in the 1970s by the Japanese Buddha Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha.
