Pain ngs that endure lead us into their frame, and draw us out to far larger places. They stay with us a er we leave the gallery.

Seemingly unfi nished pain ng styles which capture the transient eff ects of sunlight on color, fi ltered through an ar s c eye, guide the design of the space. The characteris cs of a so , blank canvas serve as the founda on of a masterpiece, preparing for the introduc on of color. The lounge and guestrooms refl ect this yielding, an cipa ve mood.

As color is introduced, it is truly showcased.

Concept

Color vibra ons, created by the broken brush strokes of mixed pigments found in these pain ngs, guide the rhythm and ar stry integrated with the coff ee bar - reminiscent of a pain ng style, where freely brushed colors replace details and contours.

The character of lobby and retail space seems reinforced by the alluring eff ect that provokes a longing for the viewer; a longing to be transported into the world of the image.

This design experience allows the guest to transcend reality, capturing fl ee ng moments of ar s c percep on.

SOFTlab is a design studio based in New York City. The studio has been involved with the design and produc on of projects across several media, including digitally fabricated large-scale sculpture to immersive digital video installa ons.

This installa on is tled, “We Are Flowers” anduses over 20,000 translucent mul colored petals to create a large immersive hanging surface.

“The engineered nature of the installa on is tempered by the delicacy and exuberance of the thousands of colorful petals that are a ached to the surface. These fl owers are placed in a more natural arrangement to combine the fl owers and structural surface in a way that resembles a natural canopy of fl owers. This canopy hangs down into the gallery at specifi c places to make the installa on much more immersive and spa al.”

Public Art

Megan Geckler’s work is informed by the space in which she installs her art and design work; it determines the “op cal order and systema c reasoning that is the founda on [of] her process”. Her site-specifi c architectural installa ons are assembles from thousands of strands of fl agging tape, a type of translucent plas c utlizied by surveyors to demarcate space on construc on sites. “The translucency of the material has encouraged [her] to experiment with light in later works...The

tape becomes the surface and a point of departure for color studies, achieved by layering the material over itself, much like a painter would use a glaze, exponen ally increasing the limited pale e that is available.”

Known as “drawings in space”, her installa ons play with architecture and light, and change as the viewer moves to a diff erent vantage point.
