WATER MANAGEMENT

50-60% EFFICIENT

USING MODERN TECHNOLOGY TO WATER AND COLLECT WATER FOR YOUR CROPS IS A HUGE EFFICIENCY BOOSTER ON THE WHOLE SITE BUT THERE ARE WAYS TO USE THESE NEW TECHNOL-OGIES IN A SMART WAY AND THERE ARE SPECIFIC USES FOR EACH TYPE OF WATERING THAT YOU PLAN ON DOING. USING A SPRINKLER SYSTEM IS ABOUT 50-60% EFFICIENT AND IT WILL SPRAY INTO THE AIR AND COVER EVERYTHING WITH WATER. IF YOU’RE DOING SMALLER INSTIL-LATIONS OR SPREAD OUT PLANTS THEN A DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM IS THE WAY TO GO. DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEMS CAN BE ABOUT 90% EFFICIENT. THIS MEANS THAT YOU CAN WATER YOUR CROP MORE EFFICIENTLY AND CHEAPER.

90% EFFICIENTI FOUND THAT USING THE CORRECT CROPS FOR YOUR REGION IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT. THERE ARE CERTAIN CROPS THAT GROW BETTER IN DIFFERENT CLIMATES AND WITH DIFFERENT LEVELS OF CARE NEEDED. FOR INSTANCE, TOMATOES GROW BETTER IN THE MIDWEST THAN THEY DO IN THE NORTH EAST AND BEATS GROW BETTER IN THE NORTH EAST THAN THEY DO IN THE MIDWEST. THE USAGE OF THE CORRECT CROPS AND THE KEY TIMING OF THEIR PLANTING ARE ESSENTIAL FOR A SUCCESSFUL CROP HARVEST BECAUSE USING THE CORRECT CROPS WILL TAKE LESS WATER THUS MAKING THE CROP CHEAPER AND IT WILL GROW STRONGER BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT BEING FORCED TO GROW IN A CLIMATE THAT THEY AREN’T MEANT FOR. IN THE AREA OF BETHANY PARK SOME OF THE BEST PLANTS ARE; TOMATOES, GREEN BEANS, CUCUM-BERS, ONIONS, JALAPENOS, AND LETTUCE JUST TO NAME A FEW. ORIENTING THE CROPS TO THE SOUTH WITH THE TALLEST BEING MOST NORTHERN WILL GIVE YOU BE BEST YIELD BECAUSE THIS WILL ALLOW THE NORTHERN MOST PLANTS SUNLIGHT WHILE NOT BLOCKING THE SMALLER PLANTS THAT ARE IN FRONT OF THEM THUS ALLOWING ALL OF THE PLANTS TO GET AN EQUAL AMOUNT OF LIGHT AND GROW AT AN EVEN RATE. THIS SAME THING APPLIES TO WATER AND ELEVATION PLANNING. PLANTING THE MORE WATER DEPENDENT PLANTS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TOPOGRAPHY WILL HELP CONSERVE MORE WATER BECAUSE ALL THE WATER WILL DRAIN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL FROM THE PLANTS THAT DIDN’T SOAK UP ALL THE WATER ON THE TOP OF THE HILL.

THIS PROJECT WAS SPLIT INTO PHASES AND PARTNERED FOR THE SITE DESIGN PHASE. WE BOTH HAD RESEARCH TOPICS AND HERS WAS HEALTHCARE COSTS RELATING TO DIET. THIS INFLUENCED BOTH OUR CORNER STORE DESIGN AS WELL AS THE FILM STUDIO DE-SIGN. WE TOOK ON THE CHALLENGE OF FOCUSING OUR EFFORTS TOWARDS M.E. PEAR-SON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LOCATED JUST NORTH OF BETHANY PARK IN WYANDOTTE COUNTY, KS. WHILE THE STUDENTS ARE NOT GIVEN THE NECESSARY NUTRIENTS DURING LUNCH AND LACK THE PROPER OUTDOOR SPACE FOR RECESS, WE DESIGNED OUR PARK AROUND THIS IDEA. OUR SITE WOULD ALLOW THE STUDENTS TO WALK JUST A FEW BLOCKS DURING AND AFTER SCHOOL HOURS TO GET THEIR DAILY EXERCISE BY PLAYING SOC-CER AND BEING OUTDOORS. IT WOULD ALSO GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE OUR URBAN FARMS IN WAYS THAT WOULD BENEFIT BOTH KNOWLEDGE AND HEALTH, AS THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO BRING THE FOODS BACK TO SCHOOL TO EAT FOR LUNCH. OUTSIDE OF BENEFITTING THE NEIGHBORING CHILDREN, OUR SITE ALSO WOULD ATTRACT ADULTS AND SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS. BETHANY PARK IS LOCATED ON A PRIME CORRIDOR IN THE KANSAS CITY AREA TO BE A MARKET PLAZA THAT COULD FEATURE FRESHLY GROWN PLANTS, ARTISTS' WORK, OR PRESENTATION SPACES FOR COMPANIES TO PROMOTE THEIR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES AND OFFER A LEGAL WAY TO SELL HOME-GROWN VEGETA-BLES. THE CORNER STORE WILL PUMP THE WATER FROM THE WATER COLLECTION SYSTEM AND PROVIDE BASIC MEDICAL CHECKUPS, SUCH AS BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS.

THIS IS A SECTION CUT THROUGH THE WATER STORAGE UNDER THE FUTSAL COURT.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE CORNER STORE IS PAINTED JAYHAWK BLUE BECAUSE IT COULD BE POTENTIALLY SPONSORED BY MEDICAL CENTERS SUCH AS KU MEDICAL CENTER. THE STRUCTURE CAN BE CLOSED UP AND TRANSPORTED VIA TRUCK TO THE SITE WITH NO SPECIAL CARE. THERE WILL BE A COMPLETE SIDE OPEN TO ALLOW EASY ACCESS AND AN AWNING TO PROVIDE SHADE FOR PEOPLE WAITING IN LINE TO BE SEEN BY A PRACTITIONER.

ONE OF THE FUTSAL COURTS IS DUG INTO THE GROUND AND MADE INTO A WATER STORAGE TANK FOR THE SITE. THE HEALTHY CORNER STORE PROTOTYPE INCLUDES PUMPS FOR THE IN-GROUND STORAGE TANK. IF ALL OF THE FUTSAL COURTS AND SOCCER FIELDS ARE MADE INTO WATER COLLECTION SYSTEMS THAT FUNNEL INTO THE FUTSAL COURT WE CAN COLLECT OVER 5 MILLION GALLONS PER YEAR THAT WILL WATER THE ENTIRE SITE THUS MAKING THE WATER NEEDS FOR THE SITE ZERO.

DESIGNING THE PARK IN THE NORTHERN PART OF BETHANY PARK ON CHWC LAND IS BENEFITING THE COMMUNITY BECAUSE THIS IS A CURRENTLY UNUSED SITE AND THIS DEVELOPMENT IS SEMI PERMINATE THUS IT WILL BE AVALABLE FOR FUTURE DEVELOP-MENT. ANOTHER MAJOR BENEFIT TO PLACING THE BUILDING TO THE NORTH IS THE DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THAT IS LESS THAN A BLOCK TO THE NORTH. M. E. PEARSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAS A LARGELY PAVED PLAY-GROUND THUS THERE IS A NEED FOR A PLACE FOR THEM TO BE ACTIVE. THE SITE INCLUDES 3 FUTSAL COURTS AND 2 FULL SIZED SOCCER FIELDS. THE ONE FUTSAL COURT WILL BECOME AN UNDERGROUND CISTERN THAT HOLDS 350,000 GALLONS OF WATER THAT IS PURIFIED BY THE FIELD SYSTEM TO BE USED FOR DRINKING AND WATERING. THE SITE ALSO CONTAINS URBAN FARMS THAT WILL PROVIDE THE STUDENTS WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT NATURALLY GROWN FOOD AND GIVE THEM EASY ACCESS TO NATURALLY GROWN FOODS THUS REDUCING THE OBESITY RATE. WE HAVE PROPOSED THAT THERE WILL ALSO BE A PLAZA THAT WILL HOUSE LOCAL ARTISTS AND LOCAL FARMERS FOR THEM TO HAVE A LEGAL OUTLET FOR THE SALE OF THEIR GOODS. THE “CORNER STORE” THAT WE ARE PROPOSING IS A PUMP HOUSE AND A SMALL CLINIC THAT WILL BE ADDRESSING SMALL POR-TIONS OF WHAT A NORMAL DOCTOR’S OFFICE WOULD AND THIS WILL HOPEFULLY HELP PREVENT EASILY CURABLE DISEASES.

THIS IS THE MARKET AREA THAT THE FARMERS AND ARTISTS CAN USE TO SELL THEIR PRODUCTS.

I SEPERATED FLOORS BY PROGRAM TYPE SO THAT THE MORE PRIVATE SPACE IS ON TOP WHILE THE MORE PUBLIC SPACES ARE ON THE MAIL LEVEL. THUS SEPARATES THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACES TO CREATE A PERSONAL FEEL IN THE SPACE. THE MODULAR FORM COMES FROM THE SHIPPING CONTAINERS THAT WE USED IN OUT PROTOTYPE BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY UNIFORM.

THE KANSAS CITY KANSAS CENTER FOR HEALTH AND LEARNING IS LOCATED ON THE NORTH SIDE OF BETHANY PARK ON COMMUNITY HOUSING OF WYNDOTTE COUNTY (CHWC) PROP-ERTY. THIS PROPERTY USED TO BE THE LOCATION OF BETHANY MEDICAL CENTER AND IS CUR-RENTLY UN-USED. THE SITE IS DIRECTLY SOUTH OF M.E, PEARSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. M.E. PEARSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAS AN ENTIRELY HARD SCAPE PLAYGROUND AND PRO-VIDING THIS PLAYGROUND AREA FOR THE COMMUNITY HAS THE POSSIBLILITY OF BEING USED BY THE SCHOOL AS WELL TO SUPLIMENT THEIR LACK OF SOFTSCAPE FOR THE KIDS TO PLAY ON. THIS TIES BACK TO MY PARTNERS RESEARCH TOPIC OF HEALTHCARE. THEY WILL ALSO HAVE ACCESS TO THE BUILDING THAT I AM PLACING ON THE SITE FOR THE FILM STUDIO THAT INCLUDES CLASSROOM SPACES, COMPUTER LABS, PRESENTATION SPACES, AND DEMO KITCH-ENS THAT THE SCHOOL WILL HAVE BE ENCOURAGED TO USE TO HELP FURTHER THE EDUCATION OF THEIR STUDENTS. THE BUILDING IS PLACED ON THE SITE SO THAT THE TOPOGRAPHICAL SUR-FACE IS USED TO THE BEST OF THE ABILITY BY MAKING THE CLASSROOMS TEIRED ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE BUILDING BY INTEGRATING THEM INTO THE LANDSCAPE.
