Introduction to the Ulna
Foundation, Active Kids and
Summer Board
Children should spend their summer laughing, learning
and actively engaging
One in six children in America are obese. Millions more are overweight.
When school’s out, our kids are actually more likely to engage in obesity-related behaviors such as watching more television, consuming more sugar and eating fewer vegetables, and their exercise levels barely budge.
7
Ulna Foundation
Ulna Foundation is the nation’s largest philanthropy dedicated to creating
meaningful programs for lasting change within our diverse and dynamic
country.
We support research and programs, throughout the nation, to build a culture of
health.
Identifying a need to address how children spend their summer, Ulna
Foundation worked with your local school district board to develop a pilot
program, Active Kids.
8
Active Kids Program
Active Kids encourages children to stay active and make good dietary decisions
during the summer.
Geared toward reducing obesity-related behaviors that occur when children are not
in school, Active Kids is an interactive program for transitioning first and second
graders. It empowers them, and their families, to make choices that support healthy
lifestyles.
9
Active Kids Program
Active Kids utilizes an empowering, tactile method of engagement called Summer Board.
Summer Board provides a summer’s worth of diverse activities that are easily integrated into a family’s daily lives. Reminiscent of games that create surprise and wonder, children uncover their healthy activities, one piece at a time.
Built on the foundation of flexibility, Summer Board easily accommodates family vacations and other events that will certainly arise during the summer break.
As the program evolves, we envision adding a second phase to the program where children and parents can participate electronically.

Active Kids Measuring SuccessData that will be collected and how it will be used
Why use the data?
Active Kids is a pilot project and an
opportunity to change the future of
our children. We must be able to
measure success. Data is the best,
most objective way.

and beginning of the school

Hello, fellow altMBA-ers!This part is just for you...
Why?
Who is it for?
What did this remind us of?

Ulna Foundation’s Humble BeginningsHello fellow altMBAers,
Our team had an interesting path to this topic. “Someone” (her name is Constance), was determined to demonstrate that the nutritional quality of school meals, as well as the defunding of physical education and music programs, were the root of childhood obesity in the US. Two hours into the convo, we realized that children in the US exhibit unhealthier behaviors during the summer months, when school is not in session. (We also realized Constance was mistaken. Of course, she is narrating this, so she can admit.. )
“What?!?” you say. Our thoughts exactly. And so the path to enlightenment (and creativity) began.
We approached this from the perspective of a philanthropic org the Ulna Foundation, dedicated to creating a culture of health. Could we put together an interactive program for children and their parents, to promote laughing, learning and engagement?
Many times someone would interrupt a Zoom session and yell, “I’ve got it.” That’s how the interactive board game (reminiscent of our childhoods) came into being, as well as a six year old sporting a moustache. Trust the process, right?
Attached you will find a few pieces of data we put together to guide the Ulta Foundation campaign. Personas of three stakeholders and pieces of campaign materials.
Tell us, did we hit the mark?

Why?
Children should spend their summer laughing, learning and
actively engaging
Therefore creating a program to engage children and their families in healthy activities

Who is it for? Ulna Foundation created three stakeholder personas
Scott - Child
Then we asked, what do we need to know about these individuals?
Darla - Parent Mrs. Smith - Teacher

Creating Personas We then created a canvas asking numerous questions about who we were creating this program for - and what we
needed to know about them
Ages, familial
statuses, etc.

Summer? Active Kids? You Betcha!
Warm days and spring flowers remind us it’s T minus 6 weeks until Summer; the sacred 60 days of freedom and fun. Gone until August are
backpacks and bus rides, soccer and ballet practice, and of course- homework!
Parents and children work hard for 9 months to study, eat well, and balance the benefits of exercise and rest. Why? Because this formula leads
to active and engaged kids with long, productive adult lives. Active, neighborhood games like kick the can or chase have slowly been stolen by
our kids new summer “best friends”- TV, gaming and web surfing. These have created the sedentary summer that seeks to rob children of
healthy, active choices. No wonder children in developing countries are heavier and more unhealthy than ever.
Fret not. Launch into summer with a new program, Active Kids. Bring back a summer filled with healthy, active choices and kick the “best
friends” to the curb. Active Kids is for the entire family and is free! In 20 minutes a day, families can engage in a physical, healthy activity that
also includes laughing and learning in a flexible, friendly competitive environment. And the result? You guessed it - healthy, Active Kids.
Active Kids is an easy, family, fun-filled learning program that leads to what we all want - healthy Active Kids.
- 20 minutes, or less, a day
- Healthy, engaging activities
- No financial investment
Please attend an informational meeting to sign up for Active Kids at 6:00 pm on April 27th, 2016 in Room 8 of the Children’s Learning Center
or if you can’t make the meeting call to arrange a private presentation.
