“You can call me the worst teacher. The worst cop. The worst anything really and I could take it, maybe. But
to call me I’m the worst singer-songwriter would have me laughing back for that is the core of my being.
I have been writing songs with ease because I know what I’m doing.
It is how this spirit expresses itself and how I have kept my soul alive”

Fin starting writing his own songs at 15, from wishy-washy love songs teenagers would pen to the social issues
narrative that would be responsible for his first published work ‘Someday” (1992). Under record label BMG.
He would consider that a wide range of influences had been responsible for his current new age fusion and progressive
pop/rock, if his music needs to be categorized. Scottish band Big Country (Mark Brezezicki’s drumming and Stuart
Adamson’s unique anthemic guitars) along with Simple Minds and solo artist Midge Ure, Swedish Rock Group Europe
with particular admiration for Joey Tempest and Kee Marcello, Norway’s A-ha, Englishman Sting, as a solo artist will
be credited for their influences. Later on, U2 and Bono took centre-stage in influencing Fin’s musical directions. U.S.
charts would have Neil Sedaka as an early influence, with names like Bryan Adams, Richard Marx, Jude Cole and
Michael Penn, Van Halen to be pivotal in shaping Fin’s song-writer’s attributes. Don Mclean and Dan Fogelberg joins
the list of folk artist Fin looks up to. He admires the prowess of the vocals of Steve Perry, John Farnham. (considered
as the best singer alive), and Lou Gramm and Rick Price, who is also an excellent song-writer in their prime. As for
producers, he is amazed at how Peter Wolf handled Big Country’s Peace In Our Time (1988) and Lou Gramm’s Long
Hard Look (1989). Richard Marx is an all-time favorite singer-songwriter/producer.
Fin views songwriting as a spiritual experience hence had issues with stardom or the glamour infused elements that
over-ride the core purpose of songwriting, which is to reach out to people. The intention to reach out to like-minded
souls should be the reason why a popular singer-songwriter would want to have a little bit of fun with the appropriate
imaging and packaging to attract the attention of the target audience. This is opposed to the core of wanting attention
and the desperation of stardom which leads to one wanting to become a songwriter/pop star which leads to a flaky
ideal of reaching out to a random population that would become an audience. Fin believes that such glamour-junkie
approaches are the reason why some artist are always hallow inside while others are more content with their careers.
Fin almost always writes and produced his own work. Plays his own instrumentation in his songs, but is aolways
excited when he finds fantastic musicians he could work with. Fin knows he is far from competent as a musician. This
is because he was never formally trained. He has been a self-taught musician from aged 15 until recently where he
took classes in a Clinique/sharing session type class in Flamenco Sin Frontiers in Singapore.
He is part of Flamenco Sin Frontiers (Flamenco without Frontiers) as a “musician” and would not dare to take the
inverted commas until he is good enough. He would consider himself the worst musician there.
“ When I play/listen to/watch Flamenco, it feels like being in a familiar territory. It speaks to my heart and soul. The
combination of the soulful guitar riffs, the seemingly offbeat but well-timed coordination from the musicians and the
dancers and singers is something I am just hypnotized with. I have cried simply watching a flamenco singer’s
performance, And I have no idea what she was singing. She could be singing about what she had for breakfast for all I
care. But how she sang it touched my soul. Everything else is irrelevant.”
Having said that, he has full confidence in his song-writing and music producing skills, especially his own compositions.
