Ourjusticesystemisahumanrightscatastropheandoneofthebiggestmoralcrisesofourtime.—VanJones

It’sintense.It’semotional.It’smind-blowing.Thisguidewillhelpyoudissectwhatyoulearn,anditwillallowyoutomoveatapacethatgivesyouspacetoprocessitemotionally,spirituallyandintellectually.Thisguideisaninvitationtodialogue—nottodebate.Thisguidewascreatedforthoseenteringthistimewithanopenspirit.Ourhopeisthatitwillsparkconversationsthatleadtoothersexpandingtheirworldviews,sharingtheirviewpoints,andactivelylistening.Therearetwomainwaystousethisguide:

FILMTHEMES(writtenbyinfluencefilmclub.com)AFRICANAMERICANSPORTRAYEDASCRIMINALSDatingbacktoD.W.Griffith’s1915BIRTHOFANATION,AfricanAmericanshavecontinuallybeenportrayedascriminalsinmanyformsofAmericanmedia.Throughthislens,thepublicatlargehascometounconsciouslybelievethatblackpeoplearemorelikelytobecomerapists,drugaddicts,murderersorthievespurelybecauseofthecoloroftheirskin.ThemoreoneseesimagesandhearsstoriesofAfricanAmericanscommittingcrimes,whetheritistrueornot,themorelikelyoneistobelievethatAfricanAmericansareindeedcriminals.MASSINCARCERATIONASREPLACEMENTFORSLAVERYAsAmendmentXIIIstates,“Neitherslaverynorinvoluntaryservitude,exceptasapunishmentforcrimewhereofthepartyshallhavebeendulyconvicted,shallexistwithintheUnitedStates,oranyplacesubjecttotheirjurisdiction.”Yet,countlesscorporationshaveprisonerswhohavebeenputtoworkwithoutpayaspartoftheirsentencing.Sincetheabolishmentofslavery,politicianshaveimplementedpoliciesthatfeedoffofthemedia-generatedfearofblackcriminals,disproportionatelyputtingAfricanAmericansbehindbarswheretheycanbeusedasfreelabor.CORPORATEINTERESTSSHAPEPRISONPOPULATIONTheAmericanLegislativeExchangeCouncil,betterknownasALEC,acoalitionofcorporateinterestslikeWalmartandVerizon,introducesfederalpolicieswhicharguablyresultinputtingAfricanAmericansandimmigrantsbehindbarsintheinterestofprofiteeringfromthesuccessofprivateprisons,surveillance,andprisonlabor.OneinfourUSlegislatorshavetiestoALEC,someofwhomhaveintroducedbillsandpolicieswithoutevenbotheringtoremoveALEC’sbrandingfromthembeforedispersingthemtocolleagues.THEDEHUMANIZATIONOFAFRICANAMERICANSByportrayingblackpeopleascriminals,deprivingtheircommunitiesoffinancialresourcesthatputthemonalevelplayingfieldtotheirwhitecompatriots,developingpublicpoliciesthataremorelikelytoseepeopleofcolorplacedbehindbars,andcreatingprisonsystemsthataremeanttopunishandbreakpeopleratherthanhelpthemrehabilitateandreentersociety,Americahasconsciously,orunconsciously,dehumanizeditsblackpopulation.

WrittenbyAmyWilliams(forCCDATheologicalReflectiononMassIncarceration)Whenwehearthewordprisoner,certainimagesimmediatelycomeacrossourminds:violent,angry,mentalissues,poor,throwaway,tonameafew.Ourunderstandingandexperiencewiththecriminaljusticesystem(probation/parole,prisoners,returningcitizens)andthoseinvolvedinitisverylimitedunlesswearedirectlyinvolvedorconnected...orsoonethinks.Thechurchismorecloselyconnectedtotheexperienceoftheprisoner,becausetheOneweworshipwasaprisonerhimself.ThestoryofJesus’sincarcerationparallelsthelifeoftoday’sinmates.Hewasseenbypoliticalleaders/powersthatbeas“lessthan,”alawbreaker(Mark9:3,Mark12:2,Mark12:10,Mark2:16).Hewasarrested(John18:3-12)andgivenanunfairtrial(John18:28-38).Thisisaprimeexampleofabrokencriminaljusticesystem.Jesuswasunjustlycondemned—“framed”—andsentencedbythecorrupt(“juryofpeers”)(John18:38b-40).Jesuswasgiventhedeathpenalty(Galatians3:1).Onceconvictedandlockedup,hewasallowedvisitorsandfondlyrememberstheimpactthathadonhistimeofincarceration:“Iwasnakedandyouclothedme,Iwassickandyouvisitedme,Iwasinprisonandyoucametome(Matthew25:36).Prisonerswhohavedonetheirtimeeventuallyreturntothecommunity(10,000aweek).CouldtheresurrectionofJesus(Mark16:5-6)beaparallelstoryforthereturningcitizen(Luke24:6-7)?Astoryofsecondchances.Astoryofarebirthofanewlifeandopportunities.Astoryofredemption.

changedtheworld—indigenousleaders,communitychangersAsweengagetheissueofmassincarceration,oneofthemosteffectivewaystoconnectwiththeincarceratedandreturningcitizensistoseethemthewayGodseesthem—asHischildren.WehavetorecognizeandacknowledgetheirinherentworthasGod'screation.

•Rememberthosewhoareinprison,asthoughinprisonwiththem,andthosewhoaremistreated,sinceyoualsoareinthebody(Hebrews13:3-5).•So,Godcreatedhumankindin(God's)image....Godsaweverythingthat(God)hadmade,andindeed,itwasverygood(Genesis1:27,31).
