Using the Decimal Number Charts

The filled in number charts are in this booklet for students to observe patterns with and/or without their teacher’s guided discussion. I suggest that students are not given the completely filled in number chart at the same time they are filling out a number chart with blanks. Then students will merely copy the numbers on the filled in chart and not look for patterns themselves, thereby defeating the purpose of these activities. Filling in the number charts will probably not take an entire hour class period. There are questions at the bottom of most of the number charts pages to guide the students into thinking about patterns. Guiding the students into a discussion about vertical, horizontal, and diagonal number patterns before and after filling out a number chart will be most valuable to the students to help them develop recognition of number patterns.

Guiding questions to ask about the number charts that count by hundredths: • What patterns do you notice in each column as the numbers go down?

o The tenths place increases by 1 tenth. • What patterns do you notice in each column as the numbers go up?

o The tenths place decreases by 1 tenth. • What patterns do you notice in each row as the numbers go right?

o The hundredths place increases by 1 hundredth. • What patterns do you notice in each row as the numbers go left?

o The hundredths place decreases by 1 hundredth. • What patterns do you notice in each number as the numbers go down diagonally?

o The hundredths place increases by 1 hundredth and tenths place increases by 1 tenth. • Why does the hundredths place disappear on the last column?

o Because ten hundredths makes 1 tenth so the hundredths regroup into the tenths column with 0 leftover hundredths. There could be a zero in the hundredths column, but since there the zero has no value, it can be left off.
