Read this text to answer number 18 – 22 Who does not know Borobudur? This Buddist temple has 1460 relief panels and 504 Buddha effigies in its complex. Millions of people are eager to visit this building as one of the world wonder heritages. It is not surprising since architecturally and functionally, as the place for Buddist to say their prayer, Borobudur is attractive. Borobudur was built by King Samarottungga, one of the kings of old Mataram kingdom, the descendant of sailendra dynasty. Based on Kayumwungan inscription, an Indonesian named Hudaya Kandahjaya revealed that Borobudur was a place for praying that was completed to be built in 824,almost one hundred years from the time the construction was begun. The name of Borobudurs ,as some people say, means a mountain having terraces (buddhara), while other says that Borobudur means monastery of the high place. Borobudur was constructed as aten terraces building. The height before being renovated was 42 meters and 34.5 after the renovation because the lowest level was used as supporting base. The first six terraces are in square form, two upper terraces are in circular form and in the top of them is the terace where Buddha statue is located facing westward.each terrace symbolizes the stage of human life.

Dear Mom and Dad,

My pen al- Bobby and I visited the grand Canyon last week. It was great !The Grand Canyon is in the state of Arizona. Over millions of years, the Colorado river cut

through the rock and formed the canyon. It is very beautiful. We started our hike on the south Rim. We hiked to the bottom of the canyon to a place

called Phantom Ranch. We stayed here over night. The next day , we rode mules to the top of the canyon. My mule was slow , but I was happy that I didn’t have to hike all the way to the top.

I saw a beautiful sunset while I was in the top of the canyon. The sky was yellow, orange, and red. I took pictures,so I will show you when I get home.

I bought some presents at the visitor’s centre. I bought a bracelet and book. I’ll see you next week.

Love, Karina

Dear Clara,

Hi, Lia. How are you? It’s been a year since we last met and I won’t stop writing you letters. I am enjoying the dusk on the balcony, while writing this letter. It’s a good time to relax, after a busy day.

These few weeks have been so hectic for me. I have to attend courses after school and study, to prepare for the National Examination. However, I don’t want to consider these activities as burdens, which would drive me crazy. So, I spend time playing and hanging out with my friends, or family. We need leisure time, don’t we?

How about you? Please write as soon as you can. I look forward to your stories.

22. From the text, we know that ……A. Covent Garden is only a place for art performance.B. Visiters can enjoy various art performances in Covent Garden.C. All artists can perform in Covent Garden freely.D. The performers like perform in Covent Garden because of the big crowds.

Covent Garden is one of the most popular parts of London. Tourists and Londoners, adults and kids – they all enjoy the great shops, restaurants and cafes, and, most of all, they love the street performers. At Covent Garden, you can see some of the best street performers in the world. There are jugglers, clowns, magicians, living statues, musicians – the list goes on and on!

Before they can perform there, performers have to pass a test (it doesn’t cost anything). The shows are free and performers don’t go round and collect money – but most people throw money into the hat! The performers can keep all the money. Sometimes the audience is small but often there are big crowds, and there’s a lot of money at the end of the show.

Chantelle plays the violin in an orchestra, but she prefers Covent Garden! “The Crowds are always great here, she says, “and the money’s better than my orchestra job!

27. The text tells us about the writer’s….A. finding C. terrible experience B. vacation D. embarrassing moment

The Leaning Tower of PisaThe Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa) or simply the

Tower of Pisa (Torre di Pisa) is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa. It is situated behind the Cathedral and is the third oldest structure in Pisa’s Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo) after the Cathedral and the Baptistry.

The height of the tower is 55.86 m (183.27 ft) from the ground on the low side and 56.70 m (186.02 ft) on the high side. The width of the walls at the base is 4.09 m (13.42 ft) and at the top 2.48 m (8.14 ft). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 metric tons (16,000 short tons). The tower has 296 or 294 steps; the seventh floor has two fewer steps on the north-facing staircase. Prior to restoration work performed between 1990 and 2001, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees, but the tower now leans at about 3.99 degrees. This means that the top of the tower is displaced horizontally 3.9 metres (12 ft 10 in) from where it would be if the structure were perfectly vertical.

A popular tourist activity is to pose for photographs pretending to “hold up” the leaning tower and preventing it from falling. The illusion is created through the principle of forced perspective.

About a month ago, I was walking alone on the beach on a warm evening. I had finished all my homework, and I wanted to relax.

Suddenly, I saw two small children who were digging in the sand. They had found something, and they were looking at it. It was big, reddish-brown and made of metal. When I looked at it, I knew immediately that it was an old bomb!

First, I told the children to move away from the bomb. Fortunately, I had my mobile phone with me, so I called the police and told them what we had found. Fifteen minutes later, the police arrived and I explained everything to them. Then I went home again.

The next day, I read the newspaper that the police had blown up the very high explosive bomb. It had been in the sand on the beach for over sixty years. It was from the Second World War, and it was very dangerous!

LITTLE BROTHER, LITTLE SISTER

Maltreated by their stepmother who was a witch, a little brother and sister fled into the woods. After running for a while, the brother said, “I’m thirsty. Let’s find a spring and have a drink.”

However, as the young boy bent down to drink, his sister heard a voice which said:”Who drinks from me will turn into a fawn.” It was the witch! Too late, the sister tried to prevent her brother from drinking.

The young boy changed at once into a fawn. In tears, the little girl made a lead collar out of her belt, and led the fawn off to the woods. There they found an abandoned cottage and lived together, far from any danger.

One day, the King was hunting in the woods, and he spied the fawn, which could not resist the urge to wander away from the cottage. The King and his hunters chased the fawn all the way back home. The King followed it into the cottage, where he found a young girl stroking the frightened animal. She was so beautiful and gentle that the King fell in love with her at once. He asked her to be his wife, and his words caused the maiden to cry for joy. When her tears fell on the fawn, it changed back into her brother. Their goodness and love had overcome the witch’s evil spell, and they lived happily with King ever after.

A flood is an overflow of an expanse of water that submerges land, a deluge. It is usually due to the volume of water within a body of water, such as a river or lake, exceeding the total capacity of the body, and as a result some of the water flows or sits outside the normal perimeter of the body. It can also occur in rivers, when the strength of the river is so high that it flows right out of the river channel, usually at corners or meanders. These, of course, are not applicable in such instances as sea flooding.

A flood occurs when an area of land, usually low-lying, is covered with water. The worst floods usually occur when a river overflows its banks. Floods happen when soil and vegetation cannot absorb all the water. The water then runs off the land in quantities that cannot be carried in stream channels or kept in natural ponds or man-made reservoirs.

Periodic floods occur naturally on many rivers, forming an area known as the flood plain. These river floods usually result from heavy rain, sometimes combined with melting snow, which causes the rivers to overflow their banks. A flood that rises and falls rapidly with little or no advance warning is called a flash flood. Flash floods usually result from intense rainfall over a relatively small area, as happened in 2007 with the Sudan floods. Coastal areas are occasionally flooded by high tides caused by severe winds on ocean surfaces, or by tsunami waves caused by undersea earthquakes.

Gorillas are the largest of all the primates. A male gorilla can be 180 centimeters tall and can weigh 200 kilograms. Gorillas are very strong but they do not often fight. In fact they are peaceful animals.

Gorillas live in small family groups of about 15. In a group there is one strong, older male, some young males, and a few females with their babies. They move slowly around a large area of jungle eating leaves and bushes.

In some ways gorillas are very like humans. When they are happy, they laugh and wave their arms. When they are angry, they beat their chests. When they are sad, they cry. But they cry quietly, without any tears.

“Oh. Miss Crow, how beautiful you are! What a lovely beak, what lovely feathers you have! What pretty eyes! If only you could sing, you would be the most beautiful bird in the world!”

Penyengat is a small island situated in 1.5 km  from Tanjungpinang (Bintan island). Administratively speaking, it belongs to the province of the archipelago of Riau. The island has a 3,5 Km length. Its population is about 2,000 persons. Among them, 1/3 are descendants of the former royal family of Riau. Actually, in the early 16th century, the ruler of Malacca took refuge to Bintan after the Portuguese conquered Malacca. The court moved several times, to Johor and to Lingga, and a branch of the royal family eventually returned and settled on Pulau Penyengat.

In the centre of the island is the restored palace of Raja Ali, who is remembered for his strict adherence to Islam. Raja Ali decided to build a mosque. According to legends, people donated food to the workers to help to build the mosque. At one time, they donated so much that the number of donated eggs exceeded the needs of workers. Thus, the eggs where mixed with the lime, resulting in the fine cement the mosque has been built of. The mosque was completed in 1844 and became an important centre of Muslim Malay learning in the 19th century.

The mosque is worth to be seen, with its original yellow and green colors, but you can’t get in if you are not Muslim. Do not hesitate to check out also the numerous royal graves around the island, and the remains of the Raja’s houses. For those interested in military history, you can also see in the middle of the island an old citadel. It is worth getting there if you want an amazing sight over the whole island. There is also a second lonely little fort located on the west part of the island.

Once upon a time a Mouse, who always lived on the land, by an unlucky chance, formed an intimate acquaintance with a Frog, who lived in the water.

One day, the Frog was intent on mischief. He tied the foot of the Mouse tightly to his own. Then, the Frog led his friend the Mouse tto the meadow where they usually searched for the food. After this, he graudually searched for the pond in which he lived, until reaching the banks of the water. He suddenly jumped in, dragging the Mouse with him

The frog enjoyed the water amazingly and swam croaking about, as if he had done a good deed. The unhappy Mouse was soon sputtered and drowned in the water. Soon afterwards, his poor dead floated on the surface.

A Hawk observed the floathing Mouse from the sky. He dove down and grabbed it with his talons, carrying it back to his nest. The Frog, being still fastened to the leg of the Mouse was also carried off a prisoner, and was eaten by the Hawk.

Bears

Bears are mamals of the family Ursidae’

Bears are classifield as caniforms, or doglike carnivorans, with the pinnipeds being their closest living relatives. Although there are only eight living species of bear, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere. Bear are found in the continents of North American, South America, Europe, and Asia.

Common characteristics of modern bears include a large body with short and solid legs, a long snout, shaggy hair, plantigrade paws with five nonretractile claws, and a short tail. While the polar bear is mostly carnivorous and the giant panda feeds almost entirely on bamboo, the remaining six species are amnivorous, with largely varied diets including both plants and animal.

With the exceptions of courting individuals and mothers with their young, bears are typically solitary animals. They are sometimes diurnal, but are usually active during the night (noctural) or twilight (crepuscular). Bears are aided by an excellent sense of smell, and despite their heavy build and awkward gait, they can quickly and are adept climbers and swimmers.

My friends and I have just returned from an interesting and amusing holiday at Lake Manijau near Padang. The lake was a crater surrounded by dense forests and rice fields. We swam in the lake, ate fish from the lake and enjoyed the cool breezes.

From there we had a two hour trip to Bukit Tinggi, a small hill top town which was clean, cool and friendly. Day trips around the hill took us to some spectacular countryside with coffee, clove and cinnamon farms. The traditional Minangkabau houses, with the roof shaped like a buffalo’s horns are everywhere.

On the following day, we went by plane to Medan and then a bus journey to Bukit Lawang, home of the WWF Orang Tua Rehabilitation Centre. We stayed in the jugle in a very charming “hotel” with no running water and electricity. We bathed in the river and dinner under a kerosene lamp. But, it was quite a wonderful sight to see these giant creatures that came swinging along on trees. The surrounding jugle was alive with monkeys and gibbons.

We spent one night in the jugle after the exhausting trek over mountains and through rivers. From Bukit Lawang we traveled to Brastagi and climbed Gunung Sibayak. Then we went to Lake Toba enjoying
