Literacy session 8– Seal Surfer 28.1.21

Learning Objective: Use dictionaries to check the meaning of words; build a rich and varied vocabulary; use prepositions to express time, place and cause.

Today we are going to finish reading Spring section of the book and then focus on Summer, Auitumn and Winter.

Now read “Spring” . If you need to re-read the first section of Spring, go back to session 1 of your Literacy unit.

Now read pages Summer, Autumn and Winter sections. Focus on the language the author is using.

Pick out any phrases with interesting verbs from these pages. I’ve found…

days lengthened

coat moulted

the sea brimmed

Again, if you do not know what these words mean, use a dictionary to find out.

If you don’t know how to use a dictionary, I shall explain!

Dictionaries are organised

· Alphabetically

· Split into quartiles. (4 sections or parts)

· The first quartile is A – E

· The second is F – L

· The third is M - S

· The final quartile is T – Z

So, if you are looking for a word like “moulted,” it would be found halfway through the dictionary because M (the first letter in the word) is halfway through the alphabet.

Next, you need to look at the next 2 letters so O U. Now you found MOU. Keeping looking through the next series of letters M- O – U – L – T until you find the word.

Ask an adult to help you as dictionary work is hard to learn.

Write down any words or phrases that interest you and discuss with an adult.
