STORYLINESJUST AROUND THE CORNER FROM MAIN STREET

• The Irish have enjoyed a dramatic advantage in corner kicks vs its opposition, 42-13. Notre Dame’s 7.0 corners/game ranks 35th in the nation and fifth in the ACC.

• The Irish even scored off of a Sammi Fisher corner kick against Purdue, as Olivia Wingate headed it past the goalie and into the net.

LATE RALLY STYMIED• Coach Norman’s best start with the Irish came in 2019 when they

fired off a 6-0-0 unblemished record. Coach Norman also matched the unbeaten mark this season, but the Tigers had other plans in overtime.

• Trailing Mizzou 2-0 in the second half, the Irish showed a lot of fight by tying the match by regulation’s end to force overtime. Sammi Fisher converted a PK in the 73rd minute before Korbin Albert hit the equalizer in the 87th.

PURDUE NOTABLES• ND continued to make Alumni a tough place to earn a result by

downing Purdue by the score of 1-0 on Sept. 2. The Irish executed a corner kick to perfection. Fisher deep to Wirtz, who headed it to the middle of the box to Wingate, who’s head put it in the back of the net.

• In addition, sophomore goalkeeper Kaylin Slatter made her first career start in net and recorded her first career shutout as well.

HOME SWEET HOME• The Irish have made Alumni Stadium a difficult venue for opposing

programs to succeed in. Since its creation in 2009, Notre Dame has gone 100-26-6, good for a .781 winning percentage. In fact, they have only surrendered one loss or better on six separate seasons.

• Looking at just the past three years, the Irish are 14-3-2 at home.

GAME-WINNERS• Game-winning goals - well Sammi Fisher has two through six

games, which currently ranks 14th in the country.• Fisher’s first came in the season opener against Bowling Green after

a 2.5 hour weather delay. She then converted the game-winning penalty in overtime at Wisconsin - on her birthday no less.

SHOT RATES OF WINGATE• When Olivia Wingate gets a shot off, lookout because its going to be

a dangerous shot on net. In fact, her .833 shot accuracy percentage ranks 10th in the nation and tops all players in the ACC. In all, she has 12 shots, with 10 on net.

THREE HEADED MONSTER• Sammi Fisher (6 points), Olivia Wingate (6 points) and Korbin Albert

(5 points) are the attacking three-headed monster for the Irish thus far this season.

• First, there’s Fisher, who is a two-time All-ACC selection. She enters this week’s games with 19 career goals and nine career assists. The graduate student is looking to top her 2019 season total of six goals and she’s off to a great start with three.

• “She’s calmer in the final third. She’s seen it all at this point. She understands what we need from a game. Possesses this maturity level of understanding,” said Coach Norman.

• Then there’s Wingate, who boasts two goals and two assists. She scored the game-winner against Purdue and was responsible for the assist of Albert’s game-tying goal at Mizzou that forced overtime.

• “Wingate has really blossomed in the new formation. She’s incredibly athletic, and stretches the backline. If teams press us, that gives her the freedom to explore space and use her speed up top. She’s one of the fastest kids in the country in my opinion,” said Coach Norman.

• Albert’s five points come from two goals and one assist. Both goals have come on the road - at Wisconsin and at Mizzou. Albert is the lone freshman that has cracked the starting lineup.

• “Korbin is a gifted attacking player that can do things on the ball that not too many players in this country can. She’s awesome in tight spots or 1v1 areas,” said Coach Norman.

LENDING A HAND FOOT• Junior midfielder Maddie Mercado has assisted two goals this

season, which co-leads the Irish. Mercado had just two career assists to her name prior to this season starting.

• ”Mercado is an all-around player. A feisty tenacious defender. She boasts a creative side with her game and passing. A box-to-box midfielder,” said Coach Norman.

NATE TAKES• “We want to be a team that applies a lot of pressure. We have a lot

of depth so keep the game fast pace. We want to be up in people’s faces, make them uncomfortable and create a lot of chances.”

• “Best defense is a good offense.”

1ST TIME SCORERS COME UP BIG ON ROAD SWING• A couple of freshmen came up big for the Irish on the 2-0 road swing

that saw wins at Wisconsin and Marquette. • First was Korbin Albert at Wisconsin - in the eighth minute, Sammi

Fisher connected on a back-heel pass to Olivia Wingate, who took the ball to the goal-line down the left hand side before finding

Page 4: FIGHTING IRISH MEDIA

STORYLINESAlbert in the middle of the box. Irish went on to win 2-1 in overtime.

• Then came Sophia Fisher a few days later at Marquette. Fisher who worked the ball up the middle of the field, dished to Maddie Mercado, who then dumped the ball back to Fisher in the middle of the box for the put away and score. Irish later won 1-0.

DEFENSE STARTS STRONG• Sophomore Eva Gaetino has anchored the Irish back-line (as center-

back) to a solid start, allowing just two goals through the first five games before suffering the 3-2 OT loss at Mizzou.

• The first two goals allowed were both off of free plays - one being a free kick taken just outside the 18-yard box and the second being a penalty kick.

• Interian started the first four games in net but was injured late in the Marquette game. She was averaging 3.25 saves per game. Sophomore Kaylin Slattery filled in for the final 6:36 of the contest.

WEATHERING THE STORM• Two weather delays - two immediate goals within minutes. See

below:• The box score may show a 3-1 season-opening victory over Bowling

Green on Aug. 19, but what it doesn’t say was how the weather impacted the flow of the game. After Olivia Wingate delivered a goal in the eighth minute to give the Irish an early 1-0 lead, lightning struck in the 27th minute. The weather delay ultimately lasted 2.5 hours as play was stopped from 7:33-9:58 p.m.

• Yet, that didn’t stop the Irish momentum as Sammi Fisher scored just two minutes into the restart.

• Ironically enough, the Irish encountered another first half weather delay at Marquette, and within two minutes of the restart, they scored yet again - this time in the form of Sophia Fisher.

LEARNING MOMENTS FROM GAME 2• The Notre Dame defense was once again stout, as the offense

outshot the Indiana Hoosiers 13-5. In fact, the Irish didn’t allow a single IU shot on goal. In addition, ND maintained 60 percent of the possession and boasted a 9-1 advantage in corners.

• The Irish had several chances around the net, but just couldn’t get it on frame as Gaetino, Hohnstein, Albert and Wingate all had near misses. In the first overtime, Bri Martinez sent in a beautiful cross from the right side to a sprinting Sammi Fisher on the far post, but it skimmed off her head and out in what would have been the game-winner.

RECORD NUMBER MAKE THEIR IRISH DEBUT• There was a record number of Irish debuts in the season opener on

Thursday, as 11 different players donned the ND uniform for the

first time. In fact, all eight freshmen saw game action, including midfielder Korbin Albert who started.

• All-in-all, 29 different Irish players received playing time in the win over Bowling Green. Outside of center back Eva Gaetino (71 min), Coach Norman was able to keep all his starters’ minutes under 65 - which ultimately proved beneficial with Sunday’s game going 110 minutes.

ABOUT DETROIT• Detroit enters the contest with a 1-5-0 record. The Titans are playing

their sixth road match of the season already as Detroit Mercy opens the 2021 season with seven of eight away from Titan Field.

• Notre Dame leads the all-time series 4-0, with a 3-0 mark at home. The last time they met was 9/18/13, when the Irish won 4-0 at home.

• Julie Ann Piechocki is the Titans’ active leader in goals (12), assists (8) and points (32). She produced two game-winning goals during the shortened 2021 spring season.

• The Titans were picked to finish 11th in the Horizon League Women’s Soccer Preseason Poll

NEW BUT NATURAL FORMATION• The Irish sported a 3-5-2 formation to kick off the 2021 season. Coach

Norman said the formation is what this team naturally gravitated to. • His ideal style - “We want to press teams and attack relentlessly. I’m

more concerned with are we making the right passes as opposed to trying to connect 20 passes in a row.”

VET LEADER - CAM DYKE• Graduate midfielder Cam Dyke boasts 43 career games on her ND

resume with 11 career starts. She’s recorded two goals (both game-winners) and two assists. Those numbers may not jump off the notes, but it’s her drive, her approach to the game and her character that’s made a huge impact on this program.

• ”Cam is the character leader on this team. She handles adversity well. She’s who the players look up to. She’s also won countless community service awards during her tenure in South Bend so that just shows you what kind of person she is.”

SIX WINS, SIX SHUTOUTS LAST SEASON• It was a 6-7 campaign for the 2020 Irish, but the unique stat about

last year was that all six wins were shutout victories. Six shutout victories in 13 contests (.462) - that ratio was the best since the 2016 Irish - who posted 11 shutout victories in 21 games (.524).

• Senior Mattie Interian started nine games in net for the Irish. She allowed just 12 goals for a 1.35 goals against average. She ultimately made 28 saves (.700) and notched three of the shutouts.

LET’S HAVE A KIKI• Kiki Van Zanten led the team in scoring last season with seven goals,

and more impressively, she did it coming off the bench. The now junior played in 12 of the 13 games, with just three starts.

• Van Zanten made the most of her opportunities, putting 12 of her 16 total shots on goal.

• Her 0.58 goals per game ranked 55th in the nation and 5th in the ACC.

• Van Zanten’s best game last year was at Miami, where she tallied her first career hat trick on just four shots. She later posted another multi-goal performance (2) vs Syracuse on Oct. 4

EXPERIENCE RETURNING• The Irish scored 18 goals in the abbreviated last season and 17 of

those goals are back this season, led by the above-mentioned Kiki Van Zanten who earned Third Team All-ACC honors. She’ll be flanked by 2020 Second Team-ACC selection Sammi Fisher.

• Fisher netted three goals and one assist in 2020. In the fall of 2019, Fisher led the Irish in all three categories, tallying six goals, five assists and 17 points on the year.

• Also scoring for the Irish last season: Maddie Mercado (2), Brooke VanDyck, Camryn Dyke, Olivia Wingate, Kati Druzina and Ellie Ospeck.

• All-in-all, 39 of the team’s 46 points (.848) are back.

PLUS A YOUTH INFUSION• With all the above-mentioned experience returning, the Irish still

will get a youthful boost of energy in the form of eight freshman.• The freshman class represents Coach Norman’s first true recruiting

cycle at the helm of the program.

ACC PRESEASON COACHES POLL• On Aug. 12, the ACC announced its preseason coaches poll with

Notre Dame landing in the No. 6 spot. The poll goes as follows: • 1. Florida St• 2. North Carolina• 3. Virginia• 4. Duke• 5. Clemson• 6. Notre Dame• 7. Virginia Tech• 8. Louisville• 9. Wake Forest• 10. NC State• 11. Pitt• 12. BC

• 13. Syracuse• 14. Miami• Notre Dame posted its best year in the ACC in 2016, when the Irish

finished league play in first place and earned the No. 1 seed. Out of eight seasons, the Irish have finished in the top-four on two separate occasions, with the second being a fourth-place showing in 2014.
