2017 FIGHTING ILLINI SEASON OUTLOOKAfter ending a 30-year NCAA Championships drought in 2016, head coach Jake Stewart leads the Fighting Illini men’s cross country team into the 2017 with aims of asserting themselves as a perennial player at the national level. The team returns seven runners from postseason competition, including five from NCAA Champion-ships.

As a program, 2017 offers a new look to the Illinois distance group, as the men’s and women’s teams will be combined under one head coach for the first time in school history.

“Collectively, within the program, it’s an exciting time,” said Coach Stewart. “The group is anxiously awaiting our first race opportunity. We’ve been together for a week and a half and we’re excited about what type of season we can put together. On the men’s side, the common goal is to improve across the board in the postsea-son. We feel confident in our personnel that we can go to the Big Ten-, Regional- and National Championships and be better than a year ago.”

A big part of that confidence stems from whom Coach Stewart has returning from last year’s team that placed 23rd at NCAA Championships. Despite the gradua-tion of All-American Dylan Lafond and Sean Pengelly, the Illini return five of their seven runners from the national meet, as well as six runners who finished in the top-50 at Big Ten Championships. Of the 31 teams at NCAA Championships, the Illini were one of four teams to feature five or more underclassmen, joining Iowa State, Virginia and Southern Utah.

“The biggest thing we learned is that we didn’t have to do anything outside of what we, as a group, were capable of. There wasn’t anything beyond our talent, our work ethic and how we approached our racing that allowed us to have the late-season successes that we had. We always felt that it was there, and that it was only a matter of some things clicking for us to make it happen.”

By reaching NCAA Championships last season, the Orange and Blue have broken the seal on every meet in their path, giving them confidence that they’re capable of continuing to set and reach loftier goals.

“There aren’t any more unknowns in their racing at the Big Ten-, regional- and national level,” continued Stewart. “They’ve all had those experi-ences. We’ve always talked within, in moving forward and progressing the program, we have to get that initial experience for the next thing to feel more attainable.”

The result is a sense of excitement and urgency to see what this group can do in 2017 with another year under their belt.

“All of those guys coming back, collectively, had a tremendous summer,” Stewart said. “There’s a renewed enthusiasm within the group, probably due to a lot of the things we were able to accomplish last year. These guys returning recognize what the new expectation within the program is.”

Leading this year’s team will be four seniors, Luke Brahm, Alex Gold, Joe Cowlin and Garrett Lee that have been a part of rebuilding the program’s culture under Coach Stewart.

“We have a four guys who are exhausting their cross country eligibility this year that have already shown to be tremendous leaders,” Stewart said of his seniors. “All of those guys have been part of the program for a number of years. They know how we manage ourselves, how week work and our objectives. I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys. Our underclassmen understand what their goals are for the team, that when any of those four speak up and make something known, our guys are going to respect, and adhere, to that.”

Along with the four seniors, seven Illini returners ran in one of the three postseason meets last season, including five from NCAA Championships.

Illinois’ top returner from both Big Ten Championships and NCAA Championships, Jon Davis, spent last spring earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors by earning All-America honors in the 5,000m race. Last fall, the Fithian, Illinois product earned a top-20 finish at Big Ten Champion-ships last season and finished fifth among freshmen at NCAA Championships.

2015 Big Ten Cross Country Freshman of the Year, Jesse Reiser, is back for his junior season after finishing in the top three on the team at both regionals and nationals. During the track season, Reiser advanced to NCAA West Prelims in the 1500m for the second straight season.

Zach Dale, Dan Lathrop, Zack Smith Billy Magnesen and Alex Gold round out the six that return from postseason competition last season. Dale and Lathrop both set 10,000m personal-best times, Dale doing so with a 30:44.89 finish at Big Ten Championships and Lathrop a 30:56.2 mark at region-als. Although not a personal-best time, Smith registered his best Big Ten finish, placing third on the team and 30th overall.

With true freshman Bryaden Hamblen the only new face to the program, there is an established culture within the team that has been ingrained over the previous five seasons. The result is a unifying energy that continues to push the team forward.

“The level of positivity and level of enthusiasm amongst the group to a man is better than it has since I’ve been here, and that’s a credit to them. That’s something that they’ve organically made happen themselves. It’s the group coming together, and being excited about their teammates and what we have in front of us this season. Enjoying the work, and enjoying the process of obtaining goals, is as much of it as anything, and this group has that.”

The Fighting Illini open up the season in one week, as they race at the Eastern Illinois Walt Crawford Open on Friday, September 1. The women’s race begins at 4:45 p.m. central time, followed by the men at 5:30.

SEASON IN REVIEW

2016 SEASON IN REVIEW

The 2016 Fighting Illini men’s cross country team will be remembered as the squad the broke the drought –a 30-year hiatus from NCAA Championships—with a 23rd place finish at the national meet Though it was a season that had its share of ups and downs, the Orange and Blue persevered to reach their ultimate goal of advancing to NCAA Championships for the first time since Gary Wienke led the program there in 1986 As a result, Head Coach Jake Stewart was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Coach of the Year

After a tune-up meet at the Hawkeye Invitational to begin the season on September 2, the Illini took second at the Bluegrass Invite behind No 9 Eastern Kentucky Highlighting the meet was Jon Davis’ third place finish in his collegiate debut The freshman from Fithian, Illinois timed 24:327 in the 8,000m race , while teammates Zack Smith (9th) and Sean Pengelly (10th) joined him in the top-10

Two weeks later, the Illini got a test run of the Les Bolstad Course in Minneapolis, Minnesota where they finished 10th as a team at the Roy Griak Invite, led by Jesse Reiser (30th/25:47) in his season debut

Unsatisfied with their performance at Griak, the team opted to run again a week later at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invite Led by the performances of Jon Davis (27th/24:130), Jesse Resier (30th/24:151) and Dylan Lafond (31st/24:159), the Illini defeated four USTFCCCA ranked teams on their way to placing fifth

The low point of the season came two weeks later at the Ed Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invite where the Illini put only one runner (Dylan Lafond) in the top-100 of the race With many Illini having their worst race of the season, the team placed 27th out of the 30 teams in their final large race before Big Ten Championships

Racing at home for the first time this season, the Illini cheered on Garrett Lee as he placed place runner-up at the Illini Open and was named Co-Big Ten Athlete of the Week on October 26

With the bitter taste of the Wisconsin meet still in their mouth, the Illini bounced back at Big Ten Championships, scoring just 126 points and placing six runners in the top-40 However, with a top-heavy meet, the 126 points were relegated to sixth place It was the first time in 12 years that the sixth-place team had scored that few points, as Michigan (123) and Minnesota (119) edged out the Illini Individually, senior Dylan Lafond claimed his second straight All-Big Ten honor, placing 10th, while Davis finished second on the team in 17th

After a step forward at Big Ten Championships, the Illini looked to make history at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet With Midwestern heavyweights Oklahoma State, Tulsa and Iowa State in their way, the Illini ran their best race of the season, beating out No 13 Iowa State by seven points for third place With the third-place finish, the Illini received an at-large bid to NCAA Championships, ending the 30-year absence

Just one of three teams representing the Big Ten at NCAA Championships, the Illini beat their pre-race USTFCCCA ranking of No 24 with a 23rd place finish in Terre Haute, Indiana Leading the Illini was Dylan Lafond (56th/30:346), while Jon Davis (80th/30:457), Jesse Reiser (135th/31:094), Zach Dale (206th/31:464) and Zack Smith (214th/31:519) also scored For Davis, the 80th place finish was second among true freshmen

While ending the 30-year NCAA Championships drought made 2016 historic, Coach Stewart’s squad still has its best days ahead of it Of the seven Illini that ran at NCAA Championships, five will return next season with each of them having at least two years of eligibility remaining After signing back-to-back top-10 recruiting classes the last two years, Stewart has already inked 2016 Class 1A state champion Brayden Hamblen to the Class of 2017 as he continues to build the Illinois pipeline

ILLINOIS CROSS COUNTRY RECORDSANNUAL RECORDS

The University of Illinois has had a strong and successful program since the early 1900s Several great runners have made significant contributions throughout the years Most recently, Trent Hoerr owned the spotlight Hoerr finished third at the 2007 Big Ten Championships and went on to earn All-America honors with a 16th-place finish at the NCAA meet In addition, the Morton, Ill, native was named the 2007 Midwest Regional Athlete of the Year by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association He also set a new Illinois 8K record with a time of 23:39 at Pre-Nationals

In the 1980s, UI won one Big Ten crown and finished second on four other occasions The premier runners of the decade were All-Americans Kerry Dickson, Jeff Jacobs, Greg Domantay, Ty Wolf and Joe Leuchtmann

The ‘70s were dominated by great individual performances In 1971, Rick Gross finished second in the Big Ten and ninth in the nation Jim Eicken earned All-America honors in 1978, and Mike Durkin finished third in the conference and 18th in the nation in 1973

Craig Virgin was synonymous with success in the 1970s He was the first runner in Big Ten history to become a four-time cross country champion, winning the crown from 1973-76 Virgin also won the 1975 NCAA individual title and went on to win the cross country world championship in 1980 and ‘81

Preceding Virgin in the 1960’s were All-Americans Ken Brown, Allen Carius and Ken Howse In 1960, Brown finished fourth in both the Big Ten and the nation Howse garnered All-American status in 1969 after a fourth-place finish in the Big Ten and 37th nationally The dominant Fighting Illini runner in the ‘60s was Allen Carius In 1962 and 63, Carius repeated as the Big Ten champion In 1962, he placed 12th at the NCAA National Championships and earned All-American status

Each year, most of these former athletes, along with dozens of other Illinois cross country alumni and their families from all decades return to Champaign-Urbana one weekend during the fall to keep the Fighting Illini tradition alive
