Scottish Super Welterweight Thai Boxer, Mescho Dunko’s dream of one day owning his own full time martial arts facility, became a reality two years ago when he seized an opportunity to take over an abandoned spray shop within a rural corner of Waterside. In what were definitely humble surroundings, he started to teach local youngsters the art of Muay Thai (thai boxing) a sport with which he had fallen in love years earlier.M-MAG, under the guidance of chief instructor Mescho, has in its two year existence gone from strength to strength and 2011 saw it move from the old spray shop in Waterside, to a fabulous newly refurbished, 3000sq ft facility closer to the town centre.Located in ‘Old Mill Park Industrial Estate’ (next to McNairs & behind Abba blinds), M-MAG now occupies a two storey, custom designed building with all of the

facilities required to satisfy the aspiring martial artist.Downstairs is the reception area, toilets and access to the boxing room. This fully matted gymnasium features a boxing ring, multiple hanging bags, speedball, floor to ceiling ball and various hand and kicking pads, while upstairs there is a further matted studio area, cardiovascular suite, strength and conditioning area, separate free weights room and male / female changing rooms.Additionally, the all new M-MAG has a well stocked shop, retailing: Boxing Gloves, Shinguards, Muay Thai Shorts, T-Shirts, Hoodies, Wraps and anklets as well as Energy Drinks, Recovery Drinks and Bottled Water.Already there is a busy schedule of classes including Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Russian Systema and Circuit Training.A combination of in-house instructors and frequent guest instructors including Billy Nelson (trainer of WBO World

Champion Ricky Burns), Rab Burt (former British and Commonwealth Muay Thai Champion) and Gary O’Brien (former Scottish Muay Thai and current Scottish Open Kickboxing Champion) ensures that class content never becomes stagnant. To mark the opening of Kirkintilloch’s newest full time martial arts centre...some very special guest were invited.Firstly, the new gym was

officially opened by two Thai Buddhist Monks from the ‘Wat Dhammapadipa’ temple in Edinburgh. This ancient and time honoured tradition of local monks blessing a new business is common practice in Thailand and it is believed that the combined chants of the temple monks can chase away evil spirits making it easier for a business to prosper.Later that day, the gym was visited by two current

and reigning World Champion Fighters. From the ‘Bad Company’ gym in Leeds, England...superstars Liam Harrison and Jordan Watson conducted a two hour seminar which was enjoyed by all who attended.

With New Year fast approaching, there has never been a better time to start thinking about taking up a new hobby. Perhaps your motivation is to get fitter, lose weight, gain confidence or even just to learn how to defend yourself...a warm welcome and a friendly atmosphere awaits you at the all new M-MAG gym, Kirkintilloch. What’s more...at M-MAG Kirkintilloch, YOUR FIRST LESSON IS FREE!So come along and give it a try, just bring a pair of shorts or comfortable jogging trousers, a bottle of water and most importantly... History of Muay ThaiMuay Thai was originally developed to be a close combat battlefield fighting skill. More deadly than the weapons it replaced, it was not intended for sport or entertainment.

Throughout history, Thailand (formerly Siam) has been at war with neighbouring countries and it is believed that after a particular with Burma, Muay Thai was first seen as entertainment.

In 1767 the ancient Siam capital of Ayutthaya fell to the invading Burmese troops. The soldiers rounded up a group of Thai residents and took them as prisoners. Among them was Nai Khanom Tom, who along with his fellow prisoners was taken to the Burmese city of Rangoon, the King of Burma, King Mangra, organised a seven-day, seven-night religious festival in honor of Buddha’s relics. The festivities included many forms of entertainment, such as costume plays, comedies, farces, and sword fighting matches.King Mangra wanted to see how a Thai would compare to fighters trained in the Burmese art of Lethwei.

Nai Khanom Tom was selected to fight against the Burmese champion. The boxing ring was set up in front of the throne and to pay respect the Burmese King, Nai Khanom Tom performed a pre-fight dance. (This pre-fight dance is now known as the ‘Ram Muay’ and is still performed today to show respect to ones instructor) When the fight began, he charged out using punches, kicks, elbows and knees, pummeling his opponent until he collapsed.

The referee however stated that the Burmese opponent was too distracted by the Ram Muay, and the knockout was declared invalid. The King asked if Nai Khanom Tom would fight nine other Burmese champions to prove himself. He agreed and fought them all, one after the other with no rest periods in between. His last opponent was a great boxing teacher from Ya Kai City. Nai Khanom Tom mangled him by his kicks and no one else dared to challenge him any further.King Mangra was impressed that he remarked, “Every part of the Thai is blessed with venom. Even with his bare hands, he can fell nine or ten opponents”.King Mangra granted Nai Khanom Tom freedom along with either riches or two beautiful wives. Nai Khanom Tom chose the wives and said that money was easier to find. He then departed with his wives for Siam.

Other variations of this story had him also wining the release of hi s fellow Thai prisoners. In Thailand, his feat is celebrated every year on March 17th as “Boxer’s Day” or “National Muay Thai Day” and Nai Khanom Tom is considered to be the founding father of competitive Muay Thai.
