A Note from Fr. Lawrence:

We hear in the Gospel of John, " Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit." (Jn 12:24) The seed of the wheat must "die" to become something else. If it is planted, it becomes another plant and produces more grains of wheat. If it is harvested, it joins with others and becomes bread, for the nourishment of others. Jesus is saying the same is true for us - as we are called to do what He does. Jesus gives up his life to atone for sin, and to bring us back into relationship with God. Our lives are not meant to be a solitary thing. We are called to communion. We are called to die to self and to live for others. We do this through our self denial, but also in reaching outside of ourselves to help others - especially when we want to do something else instead.

(continued in next column)

(continued from previous column)

Communion is a way of life that says you matter to me, and I want what's best for you. It is a call of love - the call of Jesus. When we pray for others, help others, give our time to others that is a good thing. It brings us out of ourselves and our own problems and puts us in relationship to someone else. It can be a daunting task, but The Lord is there to help us. So, as we get closer to Palm Sunday and the reading of the Lord's passion - let us do something concrete for someone else to show our communion with them - by prayer, fasting, or almsgiving. Let us join in Jesus' mission, follow him and help to make some sort of reparation for the sins of the world.

May Our Lady of Sorrows lead us, and may St. Patrick pray for us!

God bless, Fr. Lawrence

THE SACRED PASCHAL TRIDUUM

1. In the Sacred Triduum, the Church solemnly celebrates the greatest mysteries of our redemption, keeping by means of special celebrations the memorial of her Lord, crucified, buried, and risen. The Paschal Fast should also be kept sacred. It is to be celebrated everywhere on the Friday of the Lord’s Passion and, where appropriate, prolonged also through Holy Saturday as a way of coming, with spirit uplifted, to the joys of the Lord’s Resurrection. 2. For a fitting celebration of the Sacred Triduum, a sufficient number of lay ministers is required, who must be carefully instructed as to what they are to do. The singing of the people, the ministers, and the Priest Celebrant has a special importance in the celebrations of these days, for when texts are sung, they have their proper impact. Pastors should, therefore, not fail to explain to the Christian faithful, as best they can, the meaning and order of the celebrations and to prepare them for active and fruitful participation. 3. The celebrations of the Sacred Triduum are to be carried out in cathedral and parochial churches and only in those churches in which they can be performed with dignity, that is, with a good attendance of the faithful, an appropriate number of ministers, and the means to sing at least some of the parts. Consequently, it is desirable that small communities, associations, and special groups of various kinds join together in these churches to carry out the sacred celebrations in a more noble manner.
