Come, Visit the Lord

In The Blessed Sacrament

The chapel is accessible at all times. The combination is 415. The door will lock safely behind you.

At the end of Mass the deacon directs us to go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Dutifully, we respond Thanks be to God. But do we ever give much thought to what this means? What kind of loving? What kind of serving? And where do we look for The Lord so we can love and serve him? It seems to me that the words of this dismissal begin to make more sense as we choose to live as intentional disciples of Jesus Christ. In fact, the whole Mass takes on a richer meaning as we transition from just attending to celebrating and offering the Church’s great Sacrifice of Praise. We can tell we’re on the right path when we begin to look forward each week to gathering with our brothers and sisters in Christ to be taught by God’s Word and to be transformed by the Bread of Life. We marvel that our gifts of bread and wine become for us the very Body & Blood of Christ. But the reason that Christ becomes truly present to us in a form that we can take & eat, take & drink is so that he can become truly present in our flesh and blood. He wants us to take him home with us, to take him to work, to school, and to wherever we go. Christ knows who the least of his brothers and sisters are and will lead us to them so we can provide them with food and drink, so we can clothe them and provide them with shelter, so we can visit the sick and those held in any form of bondage. Pope Francis keeps reminding Christ’s followers to reach out to people who live on the edge of society, and to those who have become marginalized even if it’s because they have made some poor choices. For Christ is the good shepherd who came to seek out those who are lost. Perhaps his most moving parable was that of the Prodigal Son in which a father suffers the insult of having his younger son insist on being given his share of the inheritance. And after the son goes off to a distant country where he promptly wastes what he received on loose living and ends up broke working on a farm feeding pigs, he decides to return to his father and beg to be treated like a hired hand. And we all know what that father said and did. His love and mercy can bring tears to our eyes because we know this story is really about a God who treats all of us sinners far better than we deserve. So, let’s look forward to loving and serving the Lord wherever we find him.

JOURNEY OF FAITH

WHAT'S NEXT?

The principal nourishment for our life as disciples of Jesus is prayer: Personal & Liturgical.
