...so they chose StephenSt. Stephen the Martyr was chosen because he was "a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit." Chosen by the dis-

ciples, Stephen and the other six men became the first deacons. He would go on to become the first martyr, or proto-martyr.Stephen allowed God to make him into one of the "living stones...built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood...” We, too, are chosen to be "living stones" that build up the parish of St. Stephen the Martyr. More important than theconcrete and fixtures that make up our physical church building are the people that form the community of disciples thatmakes us who we are. (The building is also sacred, but in a different way.) A parish is a network of relationships that aremore or less loving, which means more or less representative of Who Jesus Himself is. We are meant to reflect His good-ness. Jesus said to Philip, "Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father." We should be able to say, "Whoever has seen St. Stephen’s has seenJesus." Jesus also said, "As the Father sent Me, so I send you." Do you feel sent? Perhaps not so much in this quarantine time. Are you ready tobe sent? Is your relationship with Jesus such that you are truly following Him and taking your instructions from Him? This takes true freedom anddocile obedience. Not always easy, given our resistance. How do we become those living stones who easily obey Our Lord in building up the community of disciples here at St. Stephen the Mar-tyr? Jesus said, "I am the Way..." The "How" is a person. We need a relationship of love with Jesus. How do you do that? Turn to the Way, turn toHim, He can teach us. Begin with the simple Jesus Prayer,

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Breathe in on the name of Jesus; breathe out on the "have mercy" section. He will guide you. We pray for the Holy Spirit to come and assist us:

Without your grace, there is nothing in us,

nothing that is not harmful.

Cleanse that which is unclean,Water that which is dry,

heal that which is wounded.

Bend that which is inflexible, fire that which is chilled,

correct what goes astray.

Give to your faithful, those who trust in you,

the sevenfold gifts.

Grant the reward of virtue, grant the deliverance

of salvation, grant eternal joy.

Happy Mother's Day! Thanks to all of our mothers for their sacrificial love. They have participated in God's beautiful act of creation, carrying us in their wombs, suffering the discomfort and vulnerability of pregnancy. They have sacrificed sleep, comfort, and freedom that we might live and know love. God islove. Moms are wonderful icons of who God is. They declare that you are loved and lovable. This is true, because God made us in His image andlikeness. Moms reflect this in their loving eyes, their smile, their encouragement. Let's pray for our moms, both living and deceased. They deserve our gratitude. We honor them this weekend with a Hail Mary...

Words from Fr. Ed

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.Blessed are you among women, and

blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.Amen.
